Sitting in the passenger seat, Middleton laughed. Nobody's laughing now. As revealed in the new Us Weekly, Middleton will be questioned by French authorities about the gun-waving incident and faces nearly $6000 in fines and even jail time if convicted.
The royal in-laws are not pleased. "This is embarrassing for them," a royal source says. Including big sister Duchess Kate. Her sibling's surprising photo "has put Kate in a very difficult position," the source adds. The mystery man pointing the gun in question, meanwhile, has finally been identified: He's Romain Rabillard, a 36-year-old French attorney, who ironically represents German firearms manufacturer Heckler & Koch. The single Rabillard parties with a crowd of chic Parisians, including wealthy clothing designer Viscount Arthur de Soultrait -- Middleton's pal, whose wild 30th birthday bash she attended Friday evening.

Pitt skipped the tradition of getting down on one knee, per a source, and merely presented the ring as a token of his unwavering love. “Angelina cried and smiled,” says the confidant of the actress. “And everyone hugged once she put it on. She went around and showed it to each of the kids.” The engagement fulfills one of Pitt’s long-held dreams — and the confidant gives all credit to the pair’s oldest child for making it happen. “Maddox wanted them to have a wedding,” says the source. “He was the most vocal in pushing for it.” His insistence ultimately gave Pitt, 48, the leverage he needed. “Brad pleaded and said that everything else in the kids’ lives is not normal,” says the confidant. “He added that they travel constantly, they are always in different houses and different schools. They needed to give the kids one thing in their life that is normal, and they are asking for this. He said they should do it for them.”

The couple had domesticity on the brain April 12, when they strolled through the upscale town of New Canaan (located an hour away from NYC). “They checked out a lot of home decor stores,” says an onlooker of the pair, who peeked inside china boutique the Whitney Shop and jewelry store Pennyweights. Adds a second insider, “They love getting out of the city and appreciate a slower pace.” And though Lively, 24 — who ended her five-month dalliance with Leonardo DiCaprio, 37, in September — and the Safe House actor, 35, haven’t signed on the dotted line, they are already well practiced at playing house. Reynolds put the L.A.-area home he shared with ex-wife Scarlett Johansson, 27, on the market in February and now spends much of his time at Lively’s pad in NYC. “Ryan is practically living with her already,” says one insider. “When he’s at her apartment, it feels like home.”
