Leah Remini On Larry King Now

Leah Remini – who famously left the Church of Scientology in 2013, after being a member for 35 years – sits with Larry King to discuss the organization’s controversial practices, Tom Cruise’s involvement, and why she welcomes the church to sue her over her new docu-series.

Leah Remini on Scientology: I was a fraud

Describing the Church of Scientology as a “pay-as-you-go religion,” Leah Remini – a former Scientologist – says involvement in the organization comes at great personal expense, as members pursue the alleged spiritual gains that go along with climbing the ranks of the religion.

Leah Remini: Tom Cruise thinks I’m the devil

Maintaining that Tom Cruise is sincerely dedicated to the Church of Scientology, Leah Remini – a former Scientologist who has spoken out against the church – says that Cruise has been taught by the organization to believe that she and people like her are the devil.

Leah Remini on “suppressive people” in Scientology

Former Scientologist Leah Remini describes how she says the church deals with “suppressive people” – those who have left the organization and criticize it – by systematically working to ruin their lives.

Leah Remini to Church of Scientology: Sue me

In response to the Church of Scientology’s assertions that Leah Remini’s new docu-series about the organization is factually inaccurate, the actress and former Scientologist has a powerful response: sue me.

Story By: G. H. HARDING

Joan Hamburg

CRUISE ON THE EDGE --- We went last night to see the new Tom Cruise’s new movie Edge Of Tomorrow (directed by Doug Liman) and loved it. Based on a Japanese-novella entitled All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Cruise plays a PR-officer for the military (William Cage) is who is suddenly (and, probably illegally) thrust into combat against Earth’s deadliest new foe. Killed within minutes he finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop –forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over … but, each time with more and more knowledge about what to do next. It’s a hook for sure, but once that works far better than you would expect.

The wondrous Emily Blunt also stars as Sgt. Rita Vrataski, the resistance’s greatest warrior. Her role as the somewhat mystical- warrior is pure Japanese-legend, and works terrifically well. It’s her first action role and she acquits herself perfectly with her perfectly yoga-toned physique.

Say what you will about Cruise (a movie star for three decades), but his movies usually deliver. I don't really want to know (or care) about his off-screen proclivities, I just want him to deliver on screen … and he always has. His last two movies, Oblivion and Jack Reacher were great … not classics, but totally enjoyable. In this one Cruise acts ... I mean, really acts and it's delicious! I'd love to see more of that.

The terrific Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson also star and are each every, very strong. This is a terrific, engaging story with great, tight writing (Christopher McQuarrie who wrote The Usual Suspects), some exceptional special effects and formidable and affecting performances from both Cruise and Blunt. I predict it will do very, very well. This could be the surprise hit movie of the summer.

COLDPLAY CRUSH --- We've been listening pretty much non-stop to the new album from Coldplay, Ghost Stories, for the past several days and after a rough load-in, we’ve grown to love it. As we noted here right before and after their appearance on Saturday Night Live, Chris Martin and company seemed to have toned way down their music … in fact, both songs they performed on SNL were more noticeable for their somewhat downward mood than anything else. Their last album Mylo Xyloto (their 5th) was in fact, somewhat over the top and the comparison with their newest is somewhat jarring. Now, I'm not going to get into Martin’s recent conscious uncoupling with actress Gwyneth Paltrow (as I'm not fully sure I even understand it myself), but this album is almost like a song cycle of music to her.

There are only 9 tracks, but “Midnight” and “A Sky full Of Stars” stand out as the album’s highlights. Someone once introduced Coldplay as the last great rock band in the world, and while that’s quite some statement … I'd buy it.

Interestingly, several reviews I've read suggested listening to this album in headphones …. I did and it was indeed worth it. Tough to get into, but once you're there, you'll love it.

COURT IN SESSION --- Last September, King Crimson mastermind Robert Fripp stunned the music world by announcing a new seven-man, triple-drummer reinvention of his seminal progressive-rock outfit, promising to play shows after one year of rehearsals. And his intuition was spot-on – their first performances will be a trio of New York City shows, September 18th, 19th and 20th.

The new Crimson lineup features Fripp reuniting with bass god Tony Levin and drummer-percussionist veterans Pat Mastelotto and Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree). The trio will be joined by eclectic drummer Bill Rieflin (R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails), guitarist-vocalist Jakko Jakszyk and woodwind legend Mel Collins. The latter two musicians collaborated with Fripp on the 2011 LP A Scarcity of Miracles, and Collins played on numerous early Crimson albums (including 1974's iconic Red).

Fripp recently elaborated on the band's schedule, saying they planned to rehearse in England before shifting to the U. S. in August or September 2014. "There is a plan to include the UK in the tour dates," he said, "but it depends on a number of circumstances. Right now the primary geographical focus is the United States."

All of this news was (and remains) surprising, given Fripp's distaste for the music industry. He more or less announced his retirement in a 2012 profile with Financial Times, saying, "My life as a professional musician is a joyless exercise in futility."

King Crimson was a major band in the 80’s; certainly as much for their innovative music as for their individual member's talents. It'll be interesting to see how they fare in the new millennium. These days, it’s hard to even find a progressive-rock station. Stay tuned.

CLOSING NOTES --- All things must pass: Longtime News-Talk WOR host Joan Hamburg has exited the station. Hamburg, who was a fixture in midday's on the station since the 1970’s had been with WOR for 35 years. Cindy Adams reports that Hamburg will announce her new home quickly. Reportedly Hamburg was asked to leave right before her show started last Thursday – read more

And, before we get too far away from it, NBC's Hannibal, which was renewed for a third-season, had its season finale two weeks back and delivered on every level. Creator Bryan Fuller is a true visionary. Though their ratings weren't stellar this season, here's hoping that more get into it next season. As they say, the hunt is on for Hannibal. Great TV for sure.

Tom Cruise

Scientology is facing several crises including flagging membership, internal riffs, ruthless Internet exposure, and whole new levels of mainstream awareness and ridicule because of the Cruise / Holmes divorce coupled with the release of the upcoming movie about the church that is receiving Oscar buzz.

Yet these problems pale in comparison to the latest controversy that the church is facing. Scientology’s drug treatment program, Narconon is now under heavy fire for four recent deaths at its flagship facility in Oklahoma and is under investigation. Additionally the program is mired in legal woes in Michigan and Georgia.

Last night, a report by Rock Center's Harry Smith on NBC blew the lid on the goings on at the bizarre drug rehab, where patients are schooled in the Scientology way combined with unconventional detox methods rather than getting counseling for their actual drug problems.

“The field must move towards standardized treatment protocols that are founded in the medical, clinical and spiritual sciences. Any program that does not offer all three is myopic and failing to competently treat,” responds Ben Levenson, the founder of Origins Recovery Centers.

Levenson adds, “Detoxing can be fatal and patients must be medically managed. We have excellent, evidence-based medical protocols to not only make detox safe but also as comfortable as possible.”

Good Mom Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise
This week’s issue of Us Weekly is all about Katie Holmes taking charge of daughter Suri Cruise with a new school, stricter rules, and a chance to make friends. She’s determined to give Suri a normal childhood! Details are also included on what Katie told Suri about Tom and the divorce. Insiders say Holmes, 33, was driven to file for divorce — and demand full custody — from husband Tom Cruise, 50, because she’s on a mission to take control of Suri’s upbringing. For years, the precocious tot had been raised under the discipline-free guidelines of Scientology. “Tom would let Suri do whatever she wanted,” says a Holmes source. Add an unlimited clothing and toy budget — her dad is worth an estimated $250 million, after all — and the world-famous 6-year-old “had become very demanding and bratty,” says the insider. “Katie saw that Suri was growing into a monster.” Now the Toledo, Ohio, native is determined to be more than just her daughter’s best friend.

Suri had been instructed by a series of Scientology-approved teachers, just like her half siblings, Connor, 17, and Isabella, 19, were. “But Katie didn’t want that life for her daughter,” says a source close to the former Dawson’s Creek star. “She didn’t want Suri to have a Scientology-only education.” Her choice: Manhattan’s prestigious Convent of the Sacred Heart, which boasts such notable alumni as Lady Gaga, Nicky Hilton and Caroline Kennedy.

“Suri is used to Tom being away for work, so this is nothing new,” says the Holmes insider. “Katie has delicately told her that Mommy and Daddy will spend time apart, but Suri will still see him. She’s trying to let her adjust to this easily.”

Janet Jackson

Paris Jackson’s acting dreams are creating a family nightmare! Janet Jackson, 46, is “furious” that her late brother Michael Jackson’s daughter, 14, accepted a role in the 2014 film Lundon’s Bridge and the Three Keys, says a source. “She feels it goes against Michael’s wishes to keep his kids out of the limelight until age 18,” adds the insider. “Janet thinks Paris should enjoy being a kid and possibly go to college.” But the teen “is hoping for more roles,” says the source. “It’s a huge dispute!”

Lauren Conrad

The Hills alum snuggle up with her new beau on a sexy vacation in Mexico

Caliente! LAUREN CONRAD and her boyfriend, William Tell, jetted to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on July 10 for five days of R&R: rest and romance. “It was just the two of them,” says a source of the couple of five months, who luxuriated in a $1,500-a-night suite (with a private hot tub!) at the Esperanza resort. “And they spent a lot of time in their room!” The fashion designer, 26, and the University of Southern California law student, 32, usually emerged in the late afternoon for pool time. “Most other guests were inside since the sun wasn’t too strong, so it was like they had the whole place to themselves,” continues the source. Besides, her man seems to be all Conrad needs, says a pal: “She thinks he’s The One.” Tell looked smitten, too, during a sweet sunset swim on their last day in Cabo. “They watched the sun go down from the edge of the infinity pool,” says the source. “William was behind Lauren with his arms wrapped around her. They looked just blissful.”

Jillian Michaels

Um, third time’s the charm? Hot Stuff has learned trainer Jillian Michaels, 38, is angling to rejoin The Biggest Loser after exiting the show in 2006 and again in 2010. The mother (with partner Heidi Rhoades) to Lukensia, 2, and Phoenix, 2 months, took a job on daytime’s The Doctors because “she thought the schedule would be better for starting a family, but it was a bad fit and she left,” says a source. “She sees the sweet gig she had on Loser!”

 Thomas John

The everyday antics of Hollywood are often intriguing and hard to predict, but not for celebrity psychic Thomas John, who on January 1, 2012, during his two hour long, live podcast Voices from Beyond with Thomas John, accurately predicted the divorce of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

During the January podcast, Thomas John stated that there would be “change all around Tom Cruise this year,” predicting that Cruise may “be ending it (marriage) with current wife Katie Holmes.” ( Earlier this week, Holmes filed for divorce from the blockbuster actor after their 5 year long marriage. With a looming public divorce and custody battle well underway, Thomas John’s predictions couldn’t be more accurate.

“In January on my website I also predicted health issues with Whitney Houston and I also predicted a queen of soul would die. Unfortunately, Etta James, a great soul legend, and Whitney Houston, both passed this year,” said the psychic.

The cover story of the new issue of Us Weekly is all about Katie Holmes finally breaking free from her “Rosemary’s Baby” marriage to Tom Cruise.

 Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise
Katie Holmes' Hollywood fairy tale with Tom Cruise definitely did not have a happy ending. When the 33-year-old actress filed for divorce from Cruise, 49, last Thursday -- aggressively moving for sole legal custody of daughter Suri, 6 -- it was the culmination of a year-long attempt to break free of a confining, Scientology-influenced marriage to Cruise, sources tell the new Us Weekly, out now. "Every move she made and everything she did was controlled . . . She felt like she was in Rosemary's Baby," says one insider, referring to the classic 1968 horror film, in which an aspiring young actress (Mia Farrow) unwittingly bears a child for her husband's Satanic cult.

Indeed, her shocking divorce filing, which has blindsided a "furious" Cruise, wasn't simply about the Kennedys star's own personal contentment, a Holmes source says.

"This is about protecting her daughter," the insider explains to Us. "She wants to be in charge of how Suri is being raised and didn't want her to have an exclusively Scientology education."

The first source puts it more bluntly: "She felt she had to get out to save her daughter." For more on the biggest divorce shocker of the year -- inside their rigid marriage, their final blowout fight, how Cruise is "flipping out," how Holmes "got the strength to do it".

Jessica Simpson

The scale has spoken — and it doesn’t have good news for Jessica Simpson. A source tells Hot Stuff the new mom learned at her first Weight Watchers weigh-in — a few weeks after the May 1 birth of daughter Maxwell — she had gained 70 pounds. Luckily, the spokesperson, 32, has $4 million worth of motivation to shed them. Her contract requires a 20- to 30-pound loss by the end of August or no payday, says a source. But it won’t be easy. “Jessica has always had issues with junk food,” says a Simpson pal. So the 5-foot-3 fashion mogul has called in reinforcements: She enlisted her mom, Tina, and a few pals to do the program “to help keep herself in check,” says the insider. Simpson, who plans to breast-feed through July, also ditched her beloved high-calorie margaritas, adds the source. “She had a few drinks post pregnancy, but then stopped.”

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian is totally dialed in to boyfriend Kanye West. In fact, she’s the only one who has his phone number! West, 35, “doesn’t like to be tied down by technology,” says a source, and didn’t have a cell before falling for Kardashian, 31. “It frustrated Kim,” adds the insider. “She had to call him through a bodyguard.” But West recently caved and got a secret phone. Says a source, “He only uses it for Kim!”

Channing Tatum

The star clashed with Magic Mike protégé Alex Pettyfer

Alex Pettyfer
When Channing Tatum bares his true feelings about Magic Mike costar Alex Pettyfer, it’s not pretty. “He hates Alex,” a source tells Hot Stuff. “They had massive fights on set.” The beefcake to blame, insists another insider, is Pettyfer, 22, who plays a character based on former male revue dancer Tatum, 32. “Alex was a jerk to everyone during filming for no reason,” says the insider. “He thinks he’s the star of the movie, not Channing or Matthew McConaughey.” Tatum, a coproducer of the stripper flick, retaliated by cutting a Pettyfer scene and, according to a source, “went on a rampage about it!” And at Magic’s L.A. premiere June 25, the pair still hadn’t patched things up. The actors barely interacted and posed on opposite ends of the cast line. Says a source, “Channing refuses to do appearances alone with Alex — and he’ll never work with him again.”

 Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage, Us Weekly confirmed on Friday. Married for five years, the couple share daughter Suri, 6.

"Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest. This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," says Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe in a statement to Us. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

The couple wed in Italy in November 2006. It was the first marriage for The Kennedys actress Holmes and the third for Oscar nominee Cruise, who has two kids with second wife Nicole Kidman.

EDITORS NOTE: Oh please, is any of this a surprise?

The Us Weekly Cover

Attached please find the cover story from the new issue of Us Weekly, which looks at Pippa Middleton’s shocking ride in Paris. After partying at a raucous, raunchy bash in Paris until 5 a.m., Middleton took a spin with three pals in a convertible on Saturday when photographers snapped the foursome -- and, in a bizarre turn of events, the driver of the car took out what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol and aimed it at the photographer. Sitting in the passenger seat, Middleton laughed. Nobody's laughing now. As revealed in the new Us Weekly, Middleton will be questioned by French authorities about the gun-waving incident and faces nearly $6000 in fines and even jail time if convicted.

The royal in-laws are not pleased. "This is embarrassing for them," a royal source says. Including big sister Duchess Kate. Her sibling's surprising photo "has put Kate in a very difficult position," the source adds. The mystery man pointing the gun in question, meanwhile, has finally been identified: He's Romain Rabillard, a 36-year-old French attorney, who ironically represents German firearms manufacturer Heckler & Koch. The single Rabillard parties with a crowd of chic Parisians, including wealthy clothing designer Viscount Arthur de Soultrait -- Middleton's pal, whose wild 30th birthday bash she attended Friday evening.

Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt

Also featured in the new issue is the inside story on Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s decision to make their kids’ marriage wish for Mom and Dad come true. On a recent spring day, Brad Pitt gathered the children — Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 3 — to watch as he gave Angelina Jolie, 36, a special gift: an engagement ring they’d had a hand in designing just for her. Pitt skipped the tradition of getting down on one knee, per a source, and merely presented the ring as a token of his unwavering love. “Angelina cried and smiled,” says the confidant of the actress. “And everyone hugged once she put it on. She went around and showed it to each of the kids.” The engagement fulfills one of Pitt’s long-held dreams — and the confidant gives all credit to the pair’s oldest child for making it happen. “Maddox wanted them to have a wedding,” says the source. “He was the most vocal in pushing for it.” His insistence ultimately gave Pitt, 48, the leverage he needed. “Brad pleaded and said that everything else in the kids’ lives is not normal,” says the confidant. “He added that they travel constantly, they are always in different houses and different schools. They needed to give the kids one thing in their life that is normal, and they are asking for this. He said they should do it for them.”

After Jolie’s two failed marriages, admits a source, “I don’t think she figured that she would be getting married again.” Now, Jolie just sees the exchange of vows as “formalizing the agreement they already have,” says the confidant. “It’s no big deal to her.” As for Jennifer Aniston’s reaction to the engagement news, Pitt’s former wife knows everyone is wondering how she’s taking it. “She hates it being brought up because she really doesn’t care,” says a pal of Aniston, 43. “She feels Angelina can have him. She just wants to move on.”

Also included below are this week’s Hot Stuff items which include the scoop on Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds moving in together, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel looking at wedding venues in Italy, Charlize Theron’s second date with Alexander Skarsgård, and Tom Cruise winning over the cast and crew of Oblivion with smoothies and cappuccino.

Ryan Reynolds

BLAKE AND RYAN: Moving in Together!

Lively and Reynolds want an “out of the city” sanctuary

Serena is heading to the suburbs! An insider tells Hot Stuff that Gossip Girl star Blake Lively and boyfriend of six months Ryan Reynolds want to live together and “have been looking around different areas of Connecticut” for a house. The couple had domesticity on the brain April 12, when they strolled through the upscale town of New Canaan (located an hour away from NYC). “They checked out a lot of home decor stores,” says an onlooker of the pair, who peeked inside china boutique the Whitney Shop and jewelry store Pennyweights. Adds a second insider, “They love getting out of the city and appreciate a slower pace.” And though Lively, 24 — who ended her five-month dalliance with Leonardo DiCaprio, 37, in September — and the Safe House actor, 35, haven’t signed on the dotted line, they are already well practiced at playing house. Reynolds put the L.A.-area home he shared with ex-wife Scarlett Johansson, 27, on the market in February and now spends much of his time at Lively’s pad in NYC. “Ryan is practically living with her already,” says one insider. “When he’s at her apartment, it feels like home.”

JT AND JESSICA: Wedding in Italy?

That’s amore! With their big day set for this summer, Jessica Biel, 30, and Justin Timberlake, 31, just spent five days in Italy — and toured at least one wedding venue. On April 10, the two hit Rome, where they shared dinner at Dal Bolognese and “held hands across the table,” a witness tells Hot Stuff. After the meal, the pair strolled back to their hotel and “stopped along the way for a cuddle,” says a local. Next, it was off to Naples, then a private boat tour along the island of Capri. Last stop? Bernalda, where they checked out wedding venue Palazzo Margherita (Sofia Coppola got hitched there last year). Local mayor Leonardo Chiruzzi tells Us, “We haven’t had a request for a wedding, but we’d happily help them out!”

Charlize Theron

Charlize’s Sexy Second Date

Has Charlize Theron found her Prince Charming? The Snow White and the Huntsman actress, 36, who adopted son Jackson in March, went on a second date with True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård, 35, on April 6 at West Hollywood’s Soho House. Though the duo — who hung out March 3 at the area’s Gym Sportsbar — were with a group, “she rested her head on his shoulder and they looked very couple-y,” says an onlooker. Explains a Theron source, “It isn’t serious. And no, he has not met the baby!”

Tom Cruise

Smoothie Operator

Cheers to Tom Cruise! A source tells Hot Stuff that the actor, 49, won over the cast and crew on the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, set of his 2013 sci-fi flick Oblivion when he had a self-serve smoothie and cappuccino bar installed. “There’s a big sign that reads COURTESY OF MR. TOM CRUISE,” says a source on the production. “The free drinks have made him the most popular person!”

Cameron Diaz

Filming has been stopped on the new Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz's movie "Knight And Day" after two people were injured on the set when seven bulls escaped onto the streets of Spain. The animals were being used to recreate scenes from the country's annual Pamplona bull run. They fled onto the streets of Cadiz until they were recaptured 40 minutes later. Two women were hurt during the stampede, according to local police and officials, leading the mayor's office to call off shooting until safety procedures are re-evaluated. A spokesperson for the mayor of Cadiz says, "Nothing will be filmed in Cadiz until we have a new plan that guarantees the safety of local residents." Producer Calle Cruzada insists he did not know how the bulls managed to escape. But the incident will further the fears of an anti-bullfighting organization, whose members have begged Cruise and Diaz to pull out of the movie. On the set of "Knight And Day" in Salzburg, Austria CAS International released a statement last week, which read, "Apart from the fact that bulls are abused for this movie, we also fear that after seeing this movie, even more American and other tourists will participate in the bull runs in Pamplona and elsewhere in Spain." Cruise and Diaz were due to fly to Spain to start filming their scenes next weekend.

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt's published comments about Tom Cruise's World War II movie "Valkyrie" appear to have been lost in translation The stars publicists are insisting the actor didn't take aim at his "Interview with the Vampire" co-star Tom Cruise in a recent German interview. Talking about his new film "Inglourious Basterds" in Stern magazine, Pitt reportedly told a journalist that Cruise's "Valkyrie" was "a ridiculous movie." But Pitt's spokespersons are insisting their client was misquoted. A spokesman for the star says, "Brad has never seen 'Valkyrie' so this is not accurate."

Brad Pitt

Superstar Brad Pitt is hitting out against Tom Cruise for the title of best World War II movie, calling the Hollywood actor's recent film "Valkyrie" "ridiculous." Award winning Brad, teamed up with famed director Quentin Tarantino for "Inglourious Basterds," which was released less than a year after Cruise's 2008 drama about a plot to kill Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. However, Brad is insisting his portrayal of Nazi hunter Aldo Raine in Tarantino's violent film is no comparison to Cruise's character. He tells German magazine Stern, "The second World War could still deliver more stories and films, but I believe that Quentin put a cover on that pot. With 'Basterds,' everything that can be said to this genre has been said. The film destroys every symbol. The work is done, end of story ... ('Valkyrie') was a ridiculous movie."

Speaking before the ceremony, the star insisted she's more excited than most to get her star. She told The Hollywood Reporter, "It will be cool to be under people's feet."It really is the place where people can understand exactly that actors are not really stars, they don't exist in the sky, they exist on the ground just like everybody else." Diaz's star is right outside the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. Friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes also were there to help her celebrate.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise will always remember his racing track days on the set of the film Days Of Thunder, because he was allowed to drive speeds of up to 200 miles per hour in Nascar cars. Of all his films, the actor is admitting he’ll always have a soft spot for the 1990 movie in which he played Cole Trickle, especially the scenes he filmed at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. He says, "My personal Daytona was getting up close to 200 miles per hour (and) personally driving around the track one afternoon. "Having that opportunity to drive those cars on the track and meet those drivers… I loved it."
