THANKSGIVING PARADE: TOO MANY PLUGS FOR NBC

Story By: G. H. HARDING ****

MACY’S PARADE --- I try to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade every holiday as it’s just a pretty neat program from concept to execution, as well as an interesting barometer of where things are right now in pop culture. I actually rode in it years back with an artist I was working with and it was a totally unique ride to literally be in the parade looking out.

Yesterday’s parade (its 88th) was intriguing as always, but there were so many plugs for NBC and NBC-shows, that at times it got a bit muddled. Matt Ryan, from NBC’s Constantine was there; even while his show suddenly shut down production last week. Go figure!

They heavily tub-thumped the upcoming live Peter Pan, with Alison Williams and Christopher Walken as well. Clearly, they've had a number of rehearsals to produce the commercials. One thought: Walken as Captain Hook, looks to be quite the soft-shoe man. Never knew Hook had such moves!

I always enjoy the music acts and thi…

JUSTIN LONG AND TAYLOR SWIFT "SHAKE IT OFF"

Image
When Taylor Swift, Kate Upton, Amanda Seyfried and Justin Long gathered for a recent Knicks game, Long was caught humming the hit song, “Shake It Off” by none other than T-Swift herself, he told HuffPost Live.

Long: "At one point they were playing that song 'Shake It Off' -- that song, you all know it. It's one of those songs that really gets in your head, really crawls in there."

Long then began humming the tune, forgetting that Swift, who sings the song, was seated right next to him.

Long: "And of course she heard it. And she was like, 'Oh,' and sort of started laughing, and I was so embarrassed."

But Long insists that it wasn't just a ploy to impress New York's newest Global Welcome Ambassador.

Long: "I didn't do it so she would hear me. I wouldn't have done it had I been all that conscious of all that. But she was really sweet about it. She was, like, 'That's the whole point of the album!'"

TAYLOR SWIFT HAS AFFECTION FOR JONI MITCHELL

Image
**** THE GLORIOUS CORNER
Story By: G. H. HARDING ****

MITCHELL'S GIRLS --- At the moment, the music world is all about the female vocalists and there is none bigger than Taylor Swift; she’s literally everywhere. It's almost like she could do anything but there is one thing that won't be on her list, playing Joni Mitchell.

Swift has admitted having affection for Mitchell's music but Joni doesn't seem to return the feelings. When word broke earlier this year that Swift was up for the role of Mitchell in the adaptation of the book Girls Like Us, Mitchell (Sheila Weller, 2009) quickly quashed the entire project.

The terrific book looks at music through the careers of Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon and plans were to bring it to the big screen. In an article in the London Sunday Times, Mitchell said "I squelched that! I said to the producer, 'All you've got is a girl with high cheekbones'. It's just a lot of gossip, you don't have the great s…

KEATON’S BIRDMAN --- We caught Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman last weekend, but wanted to thoroughly brainstorm what we saw before putting pen to paper. We loved it and can best describe it as an existential treastie on one’s own work; initially very successful, but, now needing a good kick in the butt.

Michael Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, who enjoyed years of success, essaying a comic-book character Birdman; he did three (like he did in Batman) and passed on a fourth installment.

Now, trying a stage adaption of a Raymond Carver play (!), he’s going through the motions with the play; a daughter he never really got to know; an ex-wife that he still has feelings for; and, a girlfriend in the play, who may or may not be pregnant. Conflicting thoughts indeed.

I’ve always loved Keaton’s work, from Night Shift to Batman to great interviews on the Letterman show … and, this is definitely a career highlight for him.

Meghan Trainor is single and ready to mingle!

At Sunday's 2014 American Music Awards in L.A., the 20-year-old "All About That Bass" singer opened up to E! News about looking for a hot guy to romance her.

"Come on guys! Look how good I'm looking today," the blond beauty told Giuliana Rancicand Terrence Jenkins on the red carpet. "What's going on?"

As for what she looks for in a boyfriend, the pop star says she loves to "cuddle [and] make music." "You can make music or not, that's fine, whatever," Trainor dished, adding, "But also be real cool and make me laugh. That's it. That's all you gotta do."

NICKI MINAJ SPEAKS AT AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS

Image
Nicki Minaj isn't exactly a stranger to wearing revealing clothing. She also isn't afraid to get a little sexy during her award show appearances.

But while on the red carpet at the 2014 American Music Awards, the "Super Bass" rapper couldn't help but admit to feeling shy at some points in her career.

"Yes and people don't know that," she told E! News exclusively. "I feel shy a lot of times actually. I just push myself to go for it."

Pretty surprising answer, right? Giuliana Rancic followed up by asking the 31-year-old what scares her.

"Being away from my family and people who love me and love me the most," she shared. "So I'm going to move back to the East Coast…just to keep grounded and be around."

She added, "I want to see my baby brother grow up a little more. I think it's good for the soul."

Before the big move to the Big Apple, Minaj has a brand new album coming out that she can't help but b…

NICK JONAS TELLS E! NEWS 'DAD PROUD' AT AMA'S

Image
We're all still thinking about Nick Jonas' Flaunt magazine photo shoot (because WOW), but what did the family think?

That's the question that E! News' Giuliana Rancic asked the young stud tonight on the red carpet at the 2014 American Music Awards in downtown Los Angeles, and what he told us might surprise you.

"I sent the pictures to my parents actually right after I did the shoot for Flauntmagazine, which is actually a tribute to Mark Wahlberg. He's iconic shoot in the '90s," Jonas, who looked handsome as ever in an Armani suit, began to tell us. "My dad responded and was like, 'You know you get that from me, right?' So he was actually really proud."

LOL! Perfect response from a proud papa.

The 22-year-old singer-actor-model stripped down to a pair of tight white underwear for Flaunt, grabbing his crotch à la Marky Mark in those iconic 1992 Calvin Klein shots, and lucky for us, the now-expert taught fans how to do the perfect crot…

ONE DIRECTION'S LOVE FOR EACH OTHER @ AMA'S

Image
The guys of One Direction are heated up the 2014 American Music Awards!

While chatting with E! News on the red carpet Sunday, the hunky Brit boy-banders couldn't help gushing about their love for one another.

"It's exciting to be here again, and exciting to see you again," Niall Horan told Giuliana Rancic. "Super, super excited," Louis Tomlinson added. "It's great to be here."

The 1D boys will be performing again this year during tonight's AMAs show. When asked which celebs make them nervous on stage, Harry Styles dished, "Everyone. It's an intense room."

Niall added, "I remember last year, Dave Grohl was in the crowd and I remember thinking, ‘I'm really nervous.' And we had just met Justin Timberlake for the first time just before we went on. I remember I was really nervous that time."

As for which celeb makes band-mate Liam Payne scream like a 12-year-old girl, Liam turned to Louis and gushed, "You …

FERGIE IN STYLE AT 2014 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS

Image
Arriving in a limousine to a major awards show? That's soooo 2000 and late!

Black Eyed Peas lead singer Fergie kicked off the 2014 American Music Awards red carpet by arriving in style to the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

"This was based on an art car, that mixed with a party bus [which] became this vehicle to take a trip and bring that L.A. kind of swag and vibe all over the world," Fergie shared with E! News exclusively. "It was a crazy entrance. I just didn't want to come back after all these years and just come in a normal car. Make it big! It was like an L.A. trinity moment."

It's the first of many exciting stunts Mrs. Josh Duhamel has up her sleeves at tonight's star-studded award show. With help from YG and DJ Mustard, the 39-year-old promises a memorable performance of "L.A. Love."

"We about to turn up. We're here to support Fergie and ‘L.A. Love.'" YG shared with E! News. "I'm about to bring what I brin…

HODA KOTB REPLACING SAVANNAH GUTHRIE @ NBC

Story By: G.H. Harding ****

TODAY SHOW MADNESS --- What’s in the water over at NBC/Universal? Having just gotten somewhat over the Ann Curry-debacle, there’s been a flurry of stories about the morning show crew; with Natalie Morales and Willie Geist suddenly being fired and Hoda Kotb replacing Savannah Guthrie.

Yesterday, on their 9:00-AM hour, the so-named Today’s Take, Geist and Morales addressed it directly. A big rumor was that Matt Lauer went to the powers that be and instructed them NOT to do this, which resulted in the immediate firing of a NBC exec.

The once untouchable Today Show, which is limping to the end of its 63rd year amid backbiting, talent anxiety, lurid headlines, and for the past two years, second-place ratings, have cost the network news division tens of millions of dollars in advertising revenue.

This latest embarrassment—Monday night’s very public dismissal of NBC News senior vice president and Today show brand general manager Jamie Horowi…
