UNCF New York's yearly campaign of giving is off to a great start as they raised more than $200,000 at the 7th annual UNCF "A Mind Is…" Hamptons Summer benefit, held August 18-19. Former HBCU president Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole and media titan Edward Lewis were honored for being trailblazers of education and voices of the unheard. Dr. Cole reminded attendees during the weekend affair that “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together.”

Master of ceremonies Don Lemon from CNN and Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF's president and CEO, kept the program lively with their contagious energy and led the fundraising charge with a special appeal, raising nearly $15,000 from guests in attendance. Close to 200 guests attended the celebratory weekend, including celebrity stylist Ty Hunter and actor Sarunas Jackson of the HBO hit series “Insecure.” Many participants left feeling …

JEAN SHAFIROFF'S STUNNING SOCIAL LIFE COVER

 **** THE HAMPTON'S
Story By Bennett Marcus For Social Life ****

Jean Shafiroff is full of energy when we speak in late July, just days after serving as honorary chair for the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation’s Unconditional Love Gala, one of the summer’s prestigious events. That same weekend, Shafiroff hosted fourteen people - and five dogs - at her Hampton’s house.

She anticipated a slightly quieter time the following weekend, when she’d have “not as many” - eight - people staying at her home. That weekend, on July 28, she’d be chairing another charity gala, for the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, which ensures access to state of the art breast health services, including breast cancer screenings, treatment and support.

But Shafiroff enjoys playing hostess. “I am certainly happy to have people come over,” she says. And she absolutely loves her life’s work, philanthropy. “I love the work I do,” she says. “It gives me a sense of purpose, and I feel very lucky to be able to do it. I…

SEN. JOHN MCCAIN'S LAST MESSAGE TO AMERICANS

Image
A final statement from Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday at 81, read by his spokesman Rick Davis:

My fellow Americans, whom I have gratefully served for 60 years, and especially my fellow Arizonians, thank you for the privilege of serving you and for the rewarding life that service in uniform and in public office has allowed me to lead. I've tried to serve our country honorably. I've made mistakes, but I hope my love for America will be weighed favorably against them. I've often observed that I am the luckiest person on Earth. I feel that way even now as I prepare for the end of my life. I've loved my life, all of it.

I've had experiences, adventures, friendships enough for ten satisfying lives and I am so thankful. Like most people, I have regrets but I would not trade a day of my life in good or bad times for the best day of anybody else's. I owe the satisfaction to the love of my family. One man has never had a more loving wife or children he was prouder o…

DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY ON ARETHA FRANKLIN

Image
I do not know what to say about Aretha Franklin. I photographed her so many times over the years.

I remember her on The Rolonda Watts show. We filmed a cooking segment and drank champagne backstage. We had so much fun. Then there were the parties at Denise Rich's penthouse overlooking Central Park. I remember one night just laughing up a storm with Aretha. I have so many memories and they are good memories. RIP Aretha!
