REGIS ON LATE LATE SHOW --- Regis Philbin, whose been missing from the TV airwaves since he was unceremoniously dumped by Disney/ABC’s Bob Iger in November of 2011, returned this week to guest host 2 nights of The Late, Late Show this week … and, was fabulous. Though somewhat more reserved than he was during his ABC time, and his famous mop of hair now fully gray, he though had a bevy of terrific guests (David Letterman, Paul Shaffer, Alan Alda, and, Martin Short), the st…

WHY SO SERIOUS ABOUT MARVEL'S FANTASTIC FOUR

**** THE GLORIOUS CORNER
Story By: G. H. HARDING ****
Fantastic Four

SIX FEET VIRTUOSO --- Funny, as I had just watched the amazing finale of HBO’s Six Feet Under (from 2005) the other day and today comes word that the cablenet has given the greenlight to a pilot for Virtuoso, a period drama about musical prodigies from Six Feet Under/True Blood creator Alan Ball, and Elton John and David Furnish.

Set in 18th century Vienna, the series follows a class of musicians from all across Europe at the prestigious Academy of Musical Excellence.

The pilot teleplay is written by Ball, and Peter Macdissi (who worked on Six Feet Under and True Blood).

Production on the Virtuoso pilot begins this spring in Budapest.

WHY SO SERIOUS FANTASTIC FOUR --- As a fan of the first two Fantastic Four movies, yes, based on yet another Marvel-comic creation, I was surprised when plans were announced last year to re-boot the franchise. Though many criticized those first two are not being serious enough, I still felt…

**** Yiddish Theater ****

NEW YORK -- "Kafka's Quest, a.k.a. Kafka/Samsa" is a quasi-realistic play by the late playwright Lu Hauser that imagines the family life of Gregor Samsa, the tragic victim of Kafka's "Metamorphosis," and his friendship with an historic Yiddish Theater actor and actress in Prague, prior to the events of the famed novella. Set in Prague in 1912, it portrays Gregor Samsa (the name Kafka personified himself with in the book) as torn between his father, who wants to keep him on the straight and narrow with a full time job, and his friendship with artists of the Yiddish Theater, who want him to join and write for them. His father’s bankruptcy forces Gregor to become the breadwinner of the family, which has been forced to take in two mysterious lodgers to make ends meet. The back and forth between the two poles of Gregor's life will culminate in "The Metamorphosis." Theater for the New City will present the play's world p…

KEVIN COSTNER TALKS RACE AND WHAT HE UNLEARNED

Image
**** BLACK OR WHITE ****

Growing up in Compton, Calif., Kevin Costner learned a few things about race — and some of those things, he made a conscious effort to unlearn. He talked to MOM.ME recently in a great interview.

The 60-year-old actor and father stars in and produced "Black or White," a PG-13 film about a grandfather who is suddenly left to care for his biracial granddaughter. When her paternal grandmother, played by Octavia Spencer, wants custody, the little girl is torn between two families. Not only that, but racial tensions come into play, and let's just say that things get harsh.

"I was around these issues, and extended family—and how everyone talked. I no longer talk that way," Costner reveals to mom.me. "That was just the way you grew up. [But] I don’t think that, and my children know nothing about that."

As a father, how have you talked to your own children about race?

I’ve had to deal with that with my oldest set. I’ve had two sets of chi…

JOE FRANKLIN'S FINAL 'WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE'

Image
**** THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
Story By:James Edstrom ****

New York City Legend Joe Franklin has taken his final "Walk Down Memory Lane".

New York City legend Joe Franklin, was the pioneering Radio and TV personality nicknamed King of Nostalgia and credited with creating the modern-day talk show, died Saturday. The star was 88.

I am going to miss Joe. I grew up watching him on late night television on WOR. Very early in my career, he would show up to my parties at Limelight, Roxy, Webster Hall and so many other NYC hotspots. Joe loved to go out. One minute he would be at some fancy high class event, then a hour later he would be at a dingy club, and no matter where the event was, Joe was there to talk. That's what Joe did, he talked.

For some reason, Joe never remembered my name. He knew my face right away, would come over and kiss me, but he always forgot my name.  We were neighbors for years in Times Square. His office was 200 feet away from me across the street. I would r…
