Animal Zone International (AZI) President Paola Mieli and Benefit Chair Richard Ledes welcomed over 100 guests to the Third Annual Argos Fall Benefit at Thalassa Restaurant in Tribeca recently. The international non-profit, which is dedicated to the protection and humane care of animals and the environment on the Greek island of Amorgos, honored philanthropist Jean Shafiroff for her efforts on behalf of animals.

Nicole DiCocco, Kick Kennedy, Alex Donner, Lacey Dorn, Cole Rumbough, Umberto Riva, Brian Maher, and Ann and Eric Jenson were among the supporters on hand. Guests watching a moving presentation that introduced the dogs, cats, goats and equines that AZI has helped on the island of Amorgos in Greece. Dozens of luxe items were donated to the silent auction, including artwork by Mark Kostabi and Robert Simon, which helped raise additional funds for the charity.

Ms. Mieli gave a moving speech about how the veterinarians and volunteers have drastically changed the lives of the neglected, homeless and abused animals over the past seven years. She elaborated on the crucial role that AZI has played in educating and changing the attitude of the community and how the goal is to strengthen, support and expand their initiatives so that the Amorgos project may become implemented throughout the Cyclades Islands.

Founded in 2007, Animal Zone International is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the animals and the environment. It has begun work on the Greek island of Amorgos, working with the community to develop a model for Greek animal welfare. AZI has established the island’s first veterinary clinic providing free or low-cost medical care and spay/neuter surgeries, and is focused on educating the island’s population on the humane treatment of animals.
