Hollywood Voice Builder Gary Catona Shares
His Thoughts on the Legacy of Whitney Houston
****
“I am eternally grateful for the opportunity that I had to train the immortal Whitney Houston, one of the truly great singers in history. In building her voice, I was constantly astounded at how quickly her voice gained in beauty, power, and ability – a testimony to her brilliant gifts.
Always bear in mind that singing is a kind of sport and a singer a kind of athlete. In this light, in addition to possessing a voice of uncommon loveliness and feeling, Whitney Houston stands out as one the greatest ‘vocal athletes’ of all time, a singing genius that has set new standards of artistic excellence in pop music and an inspiration to all those who may want to follow in her footsteps.”
Gary Catona is an American voice coach and Hollywood’s “voice builder” to the stars. Since 2005, Catona has trained Houston for weeks at a time.
Catona’s heralded voice building techniques are noted for the ability to develop resonance, power, range, and endurance in the singing and speaking voice. Catona has trained many of the world’s most successful singers and entertainers, including Whitney Houston, Sade, Andrea Bocelli, Usher, Seal, Shakira, Babyface, Lenny Kravitz, Brian Wilson, Johnny Mathis, Boyz II Men,Toni Braxton, Annie Lennox, Kevin Spacey, Robin Thicke, Lionel Richie, Robben Ford, Shirley MacLaine, and Liza Minnelli.
After years of degenerative results from 14 voice coaches, Gary Catona moved to Austin, Texas, to study vocal anatomy at the University of Texas’ acclaimed vocal department. As a result of his research, Catona created his unique “Voice Building System,” which combined centuries of Italian operatic training techniques with the modern science of exercise physiology.
"I concluded that behind a great voice is the muscular voice," Catona recalls. "And that vocal athleticism should be the goal of vocal study.”
Catona’s groundbreaking system has garnered praise from Hollywood’s most successful singers, and Catona has earned media attention worldwide, including articles in USA Today, People Magazine, and a segment on Entertainment Tonight. Catona is based in Los Angeles, California, where he is committed to generating awareness about his “Voice Building System” with the goal of restoring power and glory to the human voice for the enjoyment of all.
Of Italian descent, Catona grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Catona earned his undergraduate degree, as well as a master’s in Philosophy, from Pennsylvania State University.
About Gary’s Voice Building System
Gary Catona’s Voice Building System represents a veritable revolution in vocal training – a radical break with the typical ways the human voice is both understood and addressed.
“Iso-kinetics is a form of exercise that was originally intended to rehabilitate injuries, primarily for athletes,” Catona has stated. “Normally, this can only be done with the help of specially designed machines. My innovation was to incorporate the iso-kinetic concept to the muscular mechanism of the voice without the use of special equipment.”
He has also developed a technique for the voice that has proven to eliminate a range of distressing vocal disorders, including an otherwise incurable condition of the throat (called spasmodic dysphonia, or strangulated voice).
