Johan Ernst Nilson
After devastation inflicted by Hurricane Jova in areas of Central America nearly sidelined Swedish explorer Johan Ernst Nilson on his way to the South Pole as part of his Pole2Pole expedition, an Antarctic iceberg the size of Berlin has broken off the continent, opening a giant swath of ocean directly where Johan aimed to cross the South Pole! Johan is determined to overcome this new obstacle, maintaining his goal of trekking from the North Pole to the South Pole in just one year—becoming the first person ever to do so!
Given the immense danger icebergs pose to ships, Johan’s goal of completing his expedition in only one year, and the difficulty timing travel in and around Antarctica, Johan was forced to find an alternate route and method onto the continent, eventually finding a military plane willing to fly him onto the ice. After landing in Antarctica, Johan will ski 1,300 miles (2,200 kilometers) over two months to the South Pole and then return to Ecuador, then finally travel back to Antarctica by sail in March 2012, completing his pole to pole expedition within one year of its start.
Johan remains committed to endure all obstacles and continue his climate neutral expedition as planned, despite hurricanes, massive icebergs cracking off directly in his path, and whatever else Mother Nature throws at him—all in keeping with Johan’s philosophy that “All is possible – the impossible just takes more time.” As the dedicated Pole2Pole crew struggles to stay safe in these devastating conditions, Johan will continue to provide updates through his blog and Twitter feed.
About Climate Neutral | Pole2Pole: Honoring the anniversary of American Explorer Robert E. Peary’s expedition to the North Pole, as well as the history-making expedition of Norwegian Explorer Roald Amundsen, who was first to reach the South Pole in 1911, Johan walked 124 miles on the Arctic ice of the North Pole to the Svalbard Archipelago in Greenland. He then navigated across the Arctic Ocean to Vancouver, Canada and cycled through North, Central and South America, passing through major cities in the United States—New York, NY, Philadelphia, PA, Washington, DC and Austin, TX—into Mexico, El Salvador. He is currently traveling through Central America and will pass through South America, the Amazon Jungle, and Patagonia, culminating with a two-month journey in Antarctica on skis and a parafoil. The expected duration of Climate Neutral | Pole2Pole is one year!
Teaming up with such iconic brands as Audi—which recently named him a Brand Ambassador—and ZENITH Watches, Johan is known globally as “The Environmental Explorer,” and has accomplished some 30 excursions across 100 countries. Fans around the world are invited to track Johan’s travels as he blogs and tweets his way across the globe.
