What do Ashton Kutcher, Keri Russell, Rosario Dawson and Steven Tyler all have in common? Aside from the obvious (wealth and fame) they all have luxurious locks. The secret to their lavish tresses comes from celebrity hairstylist Alma Qeraxhiu, better known as Alma, and her eye for chic and stylish looks. Having such popular clientele and befriending icons such as Tom Ford and his long-term partner Richard Buckley, Alma’s story was not one of ease but one of road blocks and challenges.
Alma was taught the proper way to care for her curls and skin, with old-family remedies passed down by her grandmother—who’s thick and healthy locks came down past her knees! Alma knew at an early age that she had a talent for beauty. Worried about her father’s intake of beer, a seven-year-old Alma expressed her concern the only way she knew how: hair. Not realizing how his hair went from straight to curly over night, Alma told her father that she performed a perm on his head as he was sleeping with wine corks and beer! Asked why, she reasoned that if beer can perm hair; imagine what it is doing to the stomach…point taken!
Getting straight A’s in school, her father kept his word to allow Alma to visit New York City after high school, not realizing that Alma had no intention of returning home. With the one suitcase from home, Alma got odd jobs to pay for studying and training in New York City. She landed a job in a small salon in Brooklyn and the owner and clientele began to take notice of her talents. One afternoon, a principal of a major product company came into the salon after stopping a passerby and inquiring on where she had received her marvelous highlights. The owner of the salon would not let the principle in to see Alma, for fear of losing his star pupil. Eventually, Alma and the principle teamed up and though his guidance began the process of opening her own salon.
After being turn down from a bank for lack of a proper business plan, Alma befriended a patron on the street that asked her why she was crying. She explained to the women how she came to be in New York City, her passion for hair and her rejection from the bank. The women listened intently then invited Alma over for dinner. Unbeknownst to Alma, the women was the wife of the banker who turned her down. Charming the family, the banker (with a stern talking to from his wife!) and Alma worked out an improved business plan for her salon. Being involved in every aspect of construction—including bringing the crew lunch and assisting in painting the walls—Alma opened up the doors to Alma Salon New York City in April of 2000.
