SINGAPORE IS SPORTS ILLUSTRATED LOCATION

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model

Singapore has been referred to as sophisticated, straight-laced, economically superior, well educated and eco-friendly -- but until now it has never been called “sexy.” With the release of the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, that’s all about to change.

For the first time in more than four decades, Singapore was selected as a location for the coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011 issue. Four international models – Shannan Click, Kenza Fourati, Izabel Goulart and Damaris Lewis – traveled to Singapore in August for the 10-day shoot. Click, Fourati and Goulart are making their SI debut along with Singapore this year.

Singapore is an unusual pick for the swimsuit feature which traditionally takes place on beach destinations and not in urban settings. The 13-page SI spread shows the island nation’s diverse offerings, from its modernity around Marina Bay downtown to its lush greenery of Sentosa and its rich cultural history in Chinatown.

“The buildings are so modern and so beautiful and at the same time there is a lot of green everywhere,” said Izabel Goulart, “It’s a perfect place for our photo shoot.” Added Shannan Click, “It’s so interesting. I’ve never seen a city like this before. Definitely a fun city.” Kenza Fourati enjoyed discovering a new culture. “The people are very nice too,” she noted. SI Swimsuit Editor Diane Smith described Singapore and her stay at the six-star Capella Hotel designed by Norman Foster as “amazing, gorgeous, fantastic.” And the SI crew’s favorite snack among all of their travels worldwide? The dumplings in Singapore.

So what do supermodels and Singapore have in common? A very sexy image. To view the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011 issue online go to www.si.com/singapore.

The magazine feature comes amid growing international attention on Singapore being a cool city with good food, exciting nightlife and a breathtaking skyline. Last year, it was featured in popular TV shows such as The Amazing Race, Top Chef and The Martha Stewart Show. Other publications are also sitting up and taking notice of Singapore – with CNNgo awarding Singapore the second coolest nation and Conde Nast Traveler naming Singapore as “The Eater” destination for 2011.
