JIMMY SMITS FILMS AT RESORTS ATLANTIC CITY

Actor Jimmy Smits and a film crew took up temporary residence at Resorts Casino Hotel-Atlantic City yesterday to shoot scenes for an upcoming NBC Pilot produced for Conan O’Brien’s Conoco production company. While much of the show is being shot in Philadelphia, the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority’s (ACCVA) film office managed to lure them to Atlantic City to shoot several scenes. The legal drama features Smits as Supreme Court justice who is asked to break a tie in a death penalty case. Instead of bowing to pressure to vote for the death penalty when he believes the defendant is guilty, he quits the court to join a law firm where he defends the man, and sets the stage for future high profile cases. Scenes were filmed in a Rendezvous Tower suite at Resorts, as well as the lobby, valet area and two scenes in the casino, including one in which Smits plays blackjack. According to Steve Callender, senior vice president, operations for Resorts, “It’s been an exciting time for our employees and our guests. Many of our employees will be showcased in front of the camera, as well as behind the scenes. And we have had many customers who stopped by the set and were pleasantly surprised to see a celebrity like Jimmy Smits. It’s an experience that they will remember long after they leave the property.” “This production has the potential give the Resorts brand incredible exposure, and allow us to showcase our hotel and casino to audiences nationwide,” Callender added. “It’s always a pleasure to host film crews and their stars in Atlantic City,” said Jeff Vasser, president of the ACCVA. “It adds some excitement, and we’re always happy to show off the city’s assets.” Vasser adds that many people don’t realize how sought-after these film shoots are. “Productions can add to the city’s revenue, as well as its reputation. We actively pursue these ventures, and we’re very proud that many of them choose to film in Atlantic City.” Aside from two major film productions that filmed in Atlantic City last summer (The Bounty with Jennifer Anniston that was recently released and The Warrior with Nick Nolte, not yet released), the city hosts approximately 30 film crews each year for film, television and advertising shoots.
