Holiday shoppers from all over the world were evacuated from the Macy's flagship store in Herald Square New York City yesterday, after a fire in an escalator spread smoke throughout the famous building. The fire occurred in an escalator between the third and fourth floors, said Elina Kazan, a Macy's spokeswoman told AP, This was one of the biggest shopping days of the year, especially since we had a foot of snow yesterday. The smoke was so heavy, you could smell it in Times Square. One Macy's employee was concerned about asthma but declined to go to the hospital and was back at work when the store reopened, Kazan said. No other injuries were reported. Police were outside telling customers that Macy's was closed. It reopened an hour later Kazan said.
