I just read Anderson Cooper has come out as gay. Is it safe enough Anderson?
I like Anderson, I have met and spoke to him many times at events around New York City. But it really kills me that all these famous people stayed in their safe closet for all these years, while the rest of us were fighting for gay rights. Now that we got them, all these celebrities are running out of the closet like they were always there for us. And the sick thing is, the gay community welcomes them with open arms, like they were always helping the cause.
Cooper made the announcement in an email to writer Andrew Sullivan.
"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud," he wrote.
Proud of what Anderson? Proud that by you staying in the closet, you were safe? Proud that so many gay kids over the years needed a gay role model and you stayed in the closet so you were safe? Proud that you sneaked around New York City all these years, going to gay parties and not once when a gay horror story came out, did you say that you were gay and this was a outrage?
He also stated in the e mail:
"I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues. In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I’m not an activist, but I am a human being and I don't give that up by being a journalist.
He says he thinks there is a value of standing up and being counted. Yes there is, but the value was when we were fighting for gay rights, not for when we already had them. Many will argue that it is his business and no one should be reporting on his personal life. Well then Anderson should not be reporting on other celebrities personal life too.
I guess it's just me. When I mention these gay celebrities coming out of the closet only when it's safe, my friends stick up for them. Now Anderson will be the new toast of the Gay community. And the people that were fighting for gay rights all these years will be forgotten, if not already.
