NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY LGBT EVENTS

  The New York Public Library

The New York Public Library (NYPL) and Souleo Enterprises LLC, an event/media production company, are ready to wave the rainbow flag high and proud with LGBT summer adult programming throughout the month of June. Celebrating the creative energy of the LGBT community, the Gay Pride Month programming includes cosmetic makeovers by NYC’s top drag queens such as Hedda Lettuce; interactive workshops featuring the iconic drag entertainer John Epperson (Lypsinka’s Maid) and a fashion reinvention design workshop with Beau McCall. In addition to honoring the glory of the LGBT community, programming also aims to examine significant current themes, including a panel on LGBT hip-hop celebrity impersonators and cultural critics analyzing the phenomenon known as diva worship and expert insight on the hot-button topic of marriage.

“The New York Public Library is excited to host such a diverse programming that celebrates LGBT Pride in the month of June,” said New York Public Library Adult Programming Specialist, Kelly Yim. “These programs bring into light important issues in the LGBT community, such as marriage, and also highlight some of the talents within the community.”

“The vision is to not only celebrate all of the qualities that make the community wonderful, but also to look at issues that are presently challenging us,” said Souleo, founder and president of Souleo Enterprises, LLC, who is a producer of events and content for a variety of media and nonprofit institutions. “I believe that with this balance of fun and intellectual events, the LGBT community will find new inspiration to continue strengthening and advancing our place in society.”

About The New York Public Library

The New York Public Library was created in 1895 with the consolidation of the private libraries of John Jacob Astor and James Lenox with the Samuel Jones Tilden Trust. The Library provides free and open access to its physical and electronic collections and information, as well as to its services. It comprises four research centers – housed, respectively, in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building; The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts; the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; and the Science, Industry and Business Library—and 90 locations in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Research and circulating collections combined total more than 65 million items, including materials for the visually impaired. In addition, each year the Library presents thousands of exhibitions and public programs, which include classes in technology, literacy, and English as a second language.
