RCN IS THE WORST



RCN Cable, Internet and Phone is the worst company ever. I have had it with their crumby service, their lies and their disregard for any customer service.

Let me start from the beginning when a few years ago I ordered RCN Cable and Internet.


The cable was never installed right from the beginning. All RCN cared about was that they already got my money. Let me tell you something about RCN. They have no one on staff that does the installations or repairs in New York City. If they do, they never sent them to my house. They have independent contractors. Thats who they used each and every time for my cable visits. These guys get paid by each installation and each repair. They are not paid employees of RCN, so they do not care weather your cable works right or not. They get paid no matter what for the visit to your apartment.

These independent contractors would either not show for a appointment or would show up and say they needed to come back the next day. Half the time they showed the next day, the other half they didn't. When I would call RCN, they would say that I had no appointment. So the way it works is these independent contractors do what ever they want with no concern for the customer who has to take off from work. I took off over twelve days trying to get the installation right. These independent contractors make appointments they do not tell RCN and then they just do not show. In my case, they needed to put a drop line from the maintenance closet to my apartment. This takes time and these contractors don't want to waste time on the drawn out process of stringing a new line, they want to do the installations which makes them money. So they would show up at my building, so they get paid for the house call, and not do anything to make the cable work. Even after I got my building to makes holes in the ceiling for them to drop a line, they did not show for the appointment This went on for months until I finally had it and raised the roof at RCN. These same guys denied that they ever made appointments with me. One one visit the guy gave me his supervisors cell phone number and said call him in the afternoon if no one shows. Well no one showed and I called and the supervisor showed up. He made another appointment with me for the next day and never showed. I told RCN and he denied this and then I told them his cell phone number. His response, was he had no idea how I got it. This is who represents RCN in New York City, dishonest independent contractors. My reward for all the time off and all the aggravation was a five buck credit. Can you believe this is all they would give me?

I could go on and on what these guys put me through. RCN does not control them nor does RCN care that these losers are representing their company. When you call them, you are speaking to some other state, they are not in New York City. Imagine that. I live in the media capital of the world and RCN claims that they are a good company with the best service, and they can not even provide anything close to good service in Times Square. They should be ashamed.


When I ordered RCN, I ordered the bundle package, which was to include Showtime, Cinemax, The Movie Channel and others. A month or so later all the Cinemax stations stopped working. When I called RCN they said Cinemax backed out of their bundled agreement with them so they could not provide it in the package. When I argued that they sold me a package and they just can not stop services that they were being paid for, they said that they added other movie channels to the lineup. Well they did, but they were cheep movie channels, that rarely have any interesting movies on. They refused to live up to their agreement with me for which I was paying for. They then offered to give me Cinemax at a reduced cost of $8.95 a month. Looking at their pricing now, Cinemax costs $9.99 a month. Wow, a one dollar and five cent discount. Any good company would live up to their agreement and give you the channels, even if it was at their cost. But this is not RCN. They even charge me a buck to pay the bill online. RCN does not care about their customers.

They have cheated me at every level. Last year alone, there were several hikes. One was a dollar for my Digital Converter, another one for my Internet Box and another one for my HD box. Then they raised the package prices and said as a good customer, they would speed up my Internet service. Of course, they never did. They have cheated me at every turn.

There have been many more outages with the same stories over the past few years. Always the same thing. No one shows for appointments or they show and make another one and don't show. It has been endless.

My latest with RCN is the past few weeks my Internet has been going in and out. I call a few weeks ago and they make a appointment from 1-5pm on Oct. 19th. It's nearing 6 pm and no one shows, so I call RCN and am on hold for about a hour. Finally I get someone, they make some calls to the dispatcher and they send this guy. He refuses to come into my apartment because of the cigarette smoke and makes me air out the place. I open the windows, I turn on the air conditioner , I'm swinging the apartment door to blow the smoke out. Finally this guy graces me with his presence in my apartment. He checks the connections and says that he has to go to the maintenance closet down the hall. I call security to open it up. He comes back to my apartment and says he needs to go to the cellar. A few minutes later he comes back and says he is surprised that I have any service at all and they need a part and the guy will come who does that tomorrow. I wait and wait all day and no one shows. I call RCN and wait another hour on hold. Finally they go through the same old routine. They tell me I have no appointment and I argue and argue until they agree to get a hold of someone and send them over. The guy comes and he installs some plate. Said everything was working perfect now.

A few days later, it starts again. The Internet in and out. Everytime it goes out, AOL shuts down, everything freezes, Firefox dies and I have to start whatever I was doing all over again when it comes on. I try and try to reach RCN. Im listening to their recordings for 2 hours, I hang up. I keep trying during the night. I figure late at night everyone is sleeping, so if I call in the middle of the night I will get someone. I'm on hold for hours more. I hang up. I call back two days later and I wait for hours and finally get someone. They say technicians will have to look into it at their end and to call back in two days if it's still not working. They give me a repair number to use when I call back. Days go by, and it's still happening, so I call. Two hours on hold and I hang up. I call back later at 5am and hold for two hours and hang up again. This went on for several nights.

I get my RCN bill yesterday, but did not open it till last night. I was in shock. These morons had a $49.95 charge on the bill stating that I never showed for a appointment.

So I call RCN tonight again and this time I don't request Internet repair, I hit the key for new service as a new customer. They answer right away. Of course. They will take your money for new service, but won't answer the call for a repair. I start yelling and they switch me to the billing office, of course I waited the expected one hour to get someone. They agree to take off the $49.95 charge but they tell me I must pay the bill in full and the refund will come next month. I told them I refuse. They told me I had too. I told them I was not going to pay this extra charge, even if they were going to refund it next month. I argue with them. I ask them what was the status of my Internet problems, what has been done to stop the service from going in and out. They could not tell me. I demand a supervisor. They swore I would not wait long, but I was on hold so long, I had to hang up. I could not take it anymore. Listening to their recordings that they are the company of the future, that they have the best service. I was ready to throw up, so I hung up.

RCN is one of the reasons we have Occupy Wall Street now. The corporations do not care and RCN is one of the worst. They have no regard for their customers at all. The bottom line is money for RCN, not giving the customer a good product for their money means nothing. This is what most corporations have become and this is why America is mad!
