Jelani Sefu Walks The Streets Again

Today was not only the day from hell, it was a huge disappointment in our legal system. I guess I should be used to it after my almost 10 year battle with Alec Baldwin and his mother in the court system, but that is another story you can read in the archives of the New York Times or almost any other newspaper. Today is another story....

A few months ago my kid John, who my millions of readers know as the kid I kinda of adopted almost 2 years ago, was robbed by two thugs on 41 street and 9th avenue. They took his cell phone and punched him in the face. That cell phone meant everything to him, as he brought it with money he got for the very first birthday he ever had. The kid has had a very hard life of neglect and abuse.

Getting back to the story, these two thugs robbed and punched the kid while he was getting a slice of pizza. The kid came running home to get me, because I am all he has to help him in life. I am the only one he can always count on. I am the one who tells him whats right and whats wrong. So he comes running to me and I grab a few guys from my building and we run down to this pizza stand, that is more like a drug den, where these thugs teach homeless kids to rob, do drugs and just about everything else. By then, the thugs are gone. So I head over across the street to grab a cop from the Port Authority , who then decides it is someone else's jurisdiction. After figuring out which precinct the case belongs in, we head over to the 10th precinct on 20th street to file a report with Detective Castro. Everyone at the station house was great, we filed all the papers and went home, expecting not much to happen, as the police had very little to go on.

So a few weeks later, John calls me while he was dog walking and says that one of the thugs that robbed and assaulted him was at the pizza place again on 41st street. I told him to wait on 42nd street, and when I arrived, and I headed over to the pizza shop to take photos of this low life scum, because I knew If I called the police, this guy could get away, so I wanted photos to help us ID him at a later date. I snapped away, and this thug was actually smiling for the camera, while other not so happy thugs was telling me I could not take pics. I just went up to them face to face and told them I will do what ever I want. When I knew I had the photos, I signaled John to come over and I approached the thug, who we now know as Jelani Sefu, and asked him why he mugged and robbed my kid. He said he did not know him and we were out of our mind. I looked at this scum of society and said to John, " Is this the guy who robbed you?". He positively said that this was the guy who punched him and robbed him with the other thug. I started yelling at this low life thug. I told him, you think you are bad? You aren't so bad without your partners in crime. You like to rob kids when your with your friends, but you are chicken s**t when you are by yourself. He kept yelling that he did not know John and we were out of our mind. I said," Let the police decide', and took out my cell phone. This thug, the wimp he is, started running down the street. Innocent? Innocent people do not run. So I spot two policemen on the corner across the street and I grab them. I have to tell them the story and finally they get into the police car with John and they cruise the neighborhood looking for this low life, but of course every rat has his hole and he must have slid into his.

Anyway, the case is turned over to one of New York City's best detectives Geraldo A. Rivera ( Not our good friend from Fox News) who we gave the photo to and he got to work. He met with us and gave John a photo lineup, which John gave a positive ID on this thug Jelani Sefu. Rivera put out a order to pick this guy up, and they finally did last week. We were called down to the 10th precinct to have John ID the loser in a lineup. He identified once again Jelani Sefu, as I sat in the waiting room watching Family Guy.

So today we meet with the Assistant District Attorney Germaine A. Corprew and he decides to take the case in front of The Grand Jury. So they call down ace Detective Rivera and another Detective to testify and they brought in another Assistant District Attorney Che Arguello to help present the case. I even testified on how I got the photo and what happened the night John came running home to say he was robbed. John testified on how this guy robbed him and also on how he beat up another guy who tried to help, knocking out his teeth and about all the blood on the sidewalk from that attack. This guy disappeared, as most of these homeless kids are scared of this gang of thugs. We were in the court room all day and I think we all thought this was a slam dunk case. The perpetrator took the stand and said he did nothing, he had no idea who the other guy was and that he was there buying marijuana. He said my kid traded his cell phone for marijuana. Now anyone that knows the streets of New York City know these corner dealers only sell 5 or 10 dollar bags of weed. Did this Grand Jury really believe that someone would give their 300 dollar cell phone for a 5 or 10 dollar bag of weed? They did not indite. This Grand Jury let this thug walk. They did not do their job!

Maybe they did not listen good enough or maybe it was the scorching heat or the late time and they wanted to go home. Maybe it was the fact that we could not say anything about the prior arrest records of Jelani Sefu. This thug would make Lindsay Lohan look like a virgin. So this low life now gets to go back to his corner on 41st street, a well known drug dealing haven, to take advantage of more innocent people. This is what the thugs on this corner do. They take advantage of innocent homeless kids, they turn them onto drugs, they rob them, they turn them into crooks.

Now I have to worry about my kid. They said we could not get a order of protection, that the case was over against Jelani Sefu. They said if we spot the other guy, to call the police. Are they kidding?

We tried to do the right thing. We tried to play by the rules. I tried to teach my kid the right thing to do. I tried to show him the system works. I wanted to show him the system works. Detective Rivera and the other Detectives did their jobs and a very good one at that. The Assistant District Attorney's did their jobs, everyone did the right thing except the Grand Jury. They failed the public and they failed themselves, because this thug is now back on the streets to prey on someone else and it could be them. It makes you think perhaps street justice is not so bad after all.

These thugs know how to play the system. They know what buttons to push. If you head down to 41st street now, they all have moved across the street, because they know the heat is on in front of the pizza place and they are now right across the street. They know across the street is controlled by another precinct, the 14th. Somehow they know this. They are street smart. So now they are all in front of the Chinese restaurant, selling their drugs, looking for more victims and looking for more homeless people they can take advantage of. They are looking for tourists to rob and most likely they are looking to get revenge on my kid and I. Do they scare me? The answer is no. I have been attacked by badder celebrities than these thugs. But I am scared for my kid and other innocent people. I am scared someone will get killed by this gang. We did the right thing, the Grand Jury did not. They should have let this be decided at trial, where all the facts could have been presented, as there was so much we were not allowed to tell the Grand Jury. At trial, we could have. So this thug and his friends continue to walk the streets looking for more prey. Could you be next?
