It was Super Bowl Sunday for most of the country, but for a select group of New York and Hamptons food lovers, the only place to be was Kings’ Carriage House restaurant. To celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the romantic hideaway and to welcome Joel Allen, the new Chef de Cuisine, Liz King and her husband Paul Farrell invited 30 friends for a gourmet dinner prepared by Mr. Allen. The Menu: Fois Gras Flan, Pomegranate Reduction, Caramelized Pear, Lobster Purse, White Truffle Essence, Butternut Squash Apple Wood Ham Nage, Filet Mignon, Medallion of Tarragon Cognac Sausage, Port Wine Demi-Glace, Spinach Parcel with Cauliflower Mousse, and for dessert Dark Belgian Chocolate Ganache Torte, Hazelnut Tile, Lemoncello Drops. Joel Allen, a recent graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, was not only first in his class; he won the rarely presented (awarded every 8 to 10 years) “Mention Trés Bien.” Then, before a culinary tour of Europe, he was one of four chefs to prepare the US Embassy dinner for 600 on the Eiffel Tower. From the day it opened, Kings’ Carriage House has been a local as well as a destination restaurant, tearoom and wine bar. The two-story hideaway has been described as the closest New York City has to a cozy New England country inn, with a warm bar for cocktails and three intimate dinning rooms. Owners Liz King and Paul Farrell say their place is a celebration of classic French technique with international influences. Every week, they will add three Joel Allen dishes to their menu. Among those dinning were Hamptonites Beth DeWoody, Randy Polumbo, Alice Weil Judelson, Edward Callaghan, Alan and Alice Ryan, Lee Fryd, Mark and Anne Brennan, John Wegorzewski, John and Melissa Kaiser, Jean Shafiroff, Barbara Dixon and Carolina Portago (Carroll Petrie’s beautiful granddaughter). Also Jennifer Bradford Davis, Steve and Christine Schott, Ann Rapp, Ed Mundo Huerta, Helena Lehane, Michèle Gerber Klein, Raj Tolarem, Sharon Bush, Ann Watt, Kate Edmunds and Mark Langrish, Joel Allen.
