The Best At Frank's Steaks

Having grown up and gone to school in Long Island, when I was taken to Frank’s Steaks for the first time (by Tom Cuddy) … and, had perhaps the best meal ever out there … I was in total shock. Having always prided myself on the best restaurants out there, I never had even heard of Frank’s, let alone gone there. Shock and awe … indeed. When I had calmed down and sorted out the facts, I think, as embarrassed as I am to admit it, the Frank’s in Jericho was located in a tiny, strip mall … thereby giving me my first clue. As snobby as it may sound, I never really ever gave strip malls a second look … let alone a second chance. When I entered the restaurant, featuring low lighting, lots of smoky glass and a full bar was my first look. When we sat down and I glanced at their menu, it was a veritable feast of riches: let’s start with the appetizers: along with Maryland Crab Cakes, their amazing Frank’s Salad; Lump Crabmeat Cocktail; Baked Clams; and Portobello Mushrooms, they had something there they called Double Gorgonzola bread. Well, let me be the first to tell you: I love Garlic Bread … whatever sizes and shapes, but this was totally out of this world. It’s not a huge portion … but, as delicious as any garlic-bread-dish I’ve ever had. It literally melted in my mouth. As good as it was and I desired more, I had to pace myself. Next up; broken into three categories are their Seafood, Chicken, and Steak specialties. My initial visit there, I tried the Romanian Skirt Steak, which was as good as I ever had. On my second visit, I ordered the Chicken Tomato Mozzarella, which was heavenly. Imbued in a delectable tomato and garlic sauce, the chicken was amazing … and usually, I don’t even care for chicken. One of my dinner companions had the Norwegian Salmon (with Basil and Tomato) and is still raving about it today. Another had their Sesame Encrusted Tuna Steak, which hands down (according to him!) was the best he’s ever had it. The Pan Seared Jumbo Shrimp and the Stuffed Shrimp with Maryland Crab Meat drew equally excellent reviews. At the conclusion of my entrĂ©e, I was literally blown away … I almost felt like I was having a meal at a 5-star white table cloth restaurant on the UES … simply mesmerizing. In subsequent visits, we tried the Brazilian Twin Lobster Tails and Honey Pecan Roasted Chicken which were both total delights. I must also address the ‘sides’; that Frank’s has; and, each of these is totally potent and delicious: Sweet Potato and Steak Fries, Frank’s Creamed Spinach; the Vegetable Medley; and, French Fried Onions. All as good as I’ve ever had. Another friend had the Barbecued Baby Back Ribs and I tasted one, again, so succulent. Their meats are hand selected by their own butcher who looks for the most center cut meats from prime aged blend. They pay a premium for, but the quality is there. They also feature their own in-house steak sauce which is tremendous. On par with Peter Luger’s ; this is a personal favorite. They have three locations; Jericho, Rockville Centre, and Rye Brook. I actually went there once with Micky Dolenz, who has been all over rhe world and he said that damned Garlic Bread was the best he ever had! Major praise indeed ... from a Monkee no less! Yes, appearances can be deceiving ... this certainly was a gaffe and I do apologize for that. Tremendous food ... certainly one of the best meals I've ever had.
