Rehearsals began Monday, in New York City for the new Broadway production of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s beloved Oscar and Tony Award-winning film and stage musical, Gigi. The production stars Vanessa Hudgens who will make her Broadway debut as Gigi, Tony Award-winner and two-time Tony Award-nominee Victoria Clark (The Light in the Piazza, Sister Act, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella) as Mamita Alvarez, Corey Cott (Newsies) as Gaston Lachaille, three-time Tony Award-nominee Dee Hoty (The Will Rogers Follies, The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public, Footloose) as Aunt Alicia, two-time Tony Award-nominee Howard McGillin (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Anything Goes) as Honoré Lachaille and Steffanie Leigh (Mary Poppins) as Liane d’Exelmans.



Gigi features a new book adaptation by Heidi Thomas (BBC/PBS’s “Call the Midwife”) and is choreographed by Emmy Award-winner Joshua Bergasse (On the Town, “Smash”) and directed by Eric Schaeffer (Follies, Million Dollar Quartet).



Gigi will play a pre-Broadway engagement in the Eisenhower Theater at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (David M. Rubenstein, chairman, Deborah F. Rutter, president) in Washington, D.C. from January 16-February 12, 2015. Opening night is January 29, 2015.

Scenic design is by Tony Award-winner Derek McLane, costume design is by five-time Tony Award- winner Catherine Zuber, lighting design is by four-time Tony Award-winner Natasha Katz and sound design is by Tony Award-nominee Kai Harada. Hair design is by David Brian Brown. Musical director is James Moore. Orchestrations are by August Eriksmoen. Vocal and incidental music arrangement is by Matt Aument. Dance music arrangements are by Sam Davis.




Based on the 1944 novel by Colette, Gigi was first adapted for the Broadway stage by Anita Loos in 1951, with an unknown Audrey Hepburn in the title role; then, following their success with My Fair Lady, Alan Jay Lerner (screenplay and lyrics) and Frederick Loewe (music) adapted the material for the 1958 movie musical, winner of nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The film, directed by Vincente Minnelli, is widely considered the last great MGM movie musical, and is beloved for its wit, charm and sumptuous costume and production design. Gigi includes such numbers as “Thank Heaven for Little Girls,” “I Remember It Well” “The Night They Invented Champagne” and the Oscar-winning title song, “Gigi”. Gigi also won the Tony Award for Best Score in 1974.



This new adaptation of Gigi will feature all of the songs from the movie, including two songs, “The Parisians” and “Say a Prayer for Me Tonight,” that were dropped from the previous stage version. The production also includes four songs written and added to the stage score by Lerner and Loewe in 1973, “Paris is Paris Again,” “I Never Want to Go Home Again,” “The Contract,” and “In This Wide, Wide World.”

ABOUT THE CAST




Vanessa Hudgens (Gigi) A California native, Vanessa Hudgens began her career in musical theatre at the age of eight, performing in productions of Evita, Carousel, The Wizard of Oz, The King & I, The Music Man, Cinderella and Damn Yankees. She made her feature film debut in Catherine Hardwick’s Thirteen, starring Holly Hunter and Evan Rachel Wood, and co-starred in the action film, Thunderbirds. She is best known for her role as Gabriella Montez in Disney Channel’s breakaway hit, “High School Musical” and its follow up films, “High School Musical 2” and the theatrical release, High School Musical 3: Senior Year. She followed her “High School Musical” success with the critically acclaimed Bandslam, as well as Beastly and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Recent credits include Frozen Ground, directed by Scott Walker, Spring Breakers, opposite James Franco and Selena Gomez and directed by Harmony Korine, and Gimme Shelter, directed by Ron Krauss. In 2010, she won the ShoWest Award for “Female Star of Tomorrow” and the Trendsetter Award at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.



Victoria Clark (Mamita Alvarez) won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for The Light in the Piazza. Corey Cott (Gaston Lachaille) Immediately following graduation from Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, Corey made his Broadway debut starring as Jack Kelly in Newsies. His other stage credits include university productions of Suddenly Last Summer, Assassins, Sweeney Todd and A Midsummer Night's Dream. TV: Recent guest star on “Madam Secretary” and a recurring role in the upcoming TNT drama “Public Morals”. A native of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Corey made his solo concert debut last year at the Kennedy Center as part of the ASCAP Centennial Celebration. Alan Jay Lerner (Book, Lyrics) wrote these plays with Frederick Loewe: Life of the Party, What’s Up, The Day Before Spring, Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, My Fair Lady, Camelot, Gigi. He also wrote Love Life with Kurt Weill, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever and Carmelina with Burton Lane, Coco with Andre Previn, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with Leonard Bernstein and Dance a Little Closer with Charles Strouse. He wrote the libretto and/or lyrics for the following films: An American in Paris, Gigi, The Little Prince, The Royal Wedding and film versions of his plays. He wrote two books – On the Street Where I Live and The Musical Theatre: A Celebration. Mr. Lerner died in 1986.



Frederick Loewe (Music), an Austrian-born musical prodigy at age four, was the youngest piano soloist to play with the Berlin Philharmonic when he made his debut at 13. He came to the United States in 1924. In 1942, Loewe approached Alan Jay Lerner in New York to say he would like to collaborate with him on a musical show. The two went on to enjoy an extraordinary partnership resulting in the stage musicals My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon and The Day Before Spring, the films Gigi and The Little Prince and the stage version of Gigi. Loewe died in Palm Springs on February 14, 1988 at 88, the winner of numerous Tony, Academy and Golden Globe awards.



Heidi Thomas (Adaptation) is one of the UK’s top dramatists and her acclaimed career in stage, film and television drama spans 25 years. Her award-winning theatrical work has been produced by the Liverpool Playhouse, Almeida, Royal Court and Chichester Festival Theatres and by the National Theatre Studio and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her classic adaptations for the large and small screen include “Cranford,” “Return to Cranford,” “Madame Bovary,” “Ballet Shoes” and “I Capture The Castle”. Other credits include the revived “Upstairs Downstairs,” and her hit BBC show “Call the Midwife,” which is seen in 197 countries worldwide. Heidi’s work has been acknowledged and awarded by the Emmys, BAFTA, the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain, the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Christopher Society, the Broadcasting Press Guild and the Royal Television Society.



Eric Schaeffer (Director) On Broadway, his productions include Putting It Together starring Carol Burnett, Glory Days, Million Dollar Quartet and the Tony Award-nominated Follies (2011). In the West End/London, he has directed The Witches of Eastwick and Million Dollar Quartet. He is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA. Signature is an award-winning theatre that produces world premiere plays and musicals as well as reinvents new interpretations of the American musical. Signature was awarded the 2009 Regional Theatre Tony Award for excellence in the theatre. Signature Theatre has been awarded 90 Helen Hayes Awards along with 340 nominations for artistic excellence. Schaeffer has received six Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Direction along with 28 nominations. He also received a Drama Desk nomination for Follies. Schaeffer has directed over 80 productions at Signature and served as the Artistic Director of the Sondheim Celebration at The Kennedy Center, where he directed Sunday in the Park with George and Passion. He also directed Mame, First You Dream and Follies at The Kennedy Center. He has also directed at the Mark Taper Forum, Goodman Theatre, Arena Stage and Disneyland. He holds a B.F.A. and Honorary Doctorate from Kutztown University and Honorary Doctor of Arts from Shenandoah University.

Matt Aument (Vocal and Incidental Music Arranger) is a New York-based orchestrator and music director focused on new musicals. Recent productions include Tamar of the River (Prospect Theatre Company), Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), new orchestrations for Camelot (Drury Lane Theatre) and several editions of The 24 Hour Musicals. He has arranged and played for Kristin Chenoweth, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Tonya Pinkins and enjoys frequent collaboration with composer Sam Willmott.



Jenna Segal (Producer) heads Segal NYC which develops and produces theater on Broadway and Off Broadway, as well as films, television, and Internet content with a focus on women. Upcoming productions include the Broadway-bound musical Gigi, based on the Colette novella and 1958 Academy Award-winning film, which has been adapted by “Call the Midwife’s” Heidi Thomas and on which Segal is the Lead Producer. Before forming Segal NYC, Segal co-produced the film Black Dynamite that has now graduated into an animated series on Adult Swim. Segal began her career in political talk shows in Washington, DC including “Equal Time,” later moving to the VIACOM networks serving in development positions of Production Manager, Line Producer and later Director of Production Management Development. Segal has three children and lives with her husband in New York City.
