Patek Philppe Solar Dome
Antiquorum Auctioneers is delighted to present an extraordinary example of art and design, a one-of-a-kind Patek Philppe solar dome clock hand-painted by renowned graffiti artist, John “CRASH” Matos at its auction of “Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces” in New York on December 13th. The proceeds from the sale of this piece will be donated to the Aids Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA).
This is the first item CRASH has hand painted since he famously painted the English guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Clapton's five guitars, one of which sold at auction for over $321,000 in 2004. The exquisite clock was first displayed along with new large scale paintings by CRASH at his exhibit “CRASH: Back on the Block” hosted by Antiquorum in their gallery space on September 12th through October 6th.
Made circa 1960, this is a very fine and rare solar-powered and electro-mechanical gilt brass and hand-painted table clock. It is offered with a pre-auction estimate of $10,000 - $15,000.
“We are extremely pleased to offer this magnificent Patek Philippe dome clock hand-painted by CRASH in our December auction," said Evan Zimmermann, President & CEO, Antiquorum. “The exceptional combination of a vintage timepiece and graffiti art is both striking and unique. As part of our commitment to contributing to worthy causes and charities worldwide, we are delighted to donate all proceeds from the clock to Aids Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA).”
About John CRASH Matos: Born John Matos in 1961, CRASH was raised in the Bronx, New York. He adopted his nickname after accidentally crashing a computer in school, and CRASH began appearing on trains circulating all throughout New York City. In his freshman year of high school, CRASH spray painted subway cars and took photos of his graffiti art from the street and transferred them to large-scale canvases. In 1980, he curated the ground-breaking "Graffiti Art Success for America" at Fashion MODA, launching the graffiti movement that remains popular through today. By 1983, he was offered his first gallery show at the Sidney Janis Gallery, which eventually led to many other shows and global recognition. His works have been exhibited all over the world and can be found in many permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. http://www.crashone.com

About Acria: ACRIA was founded as the Community Research Initiative on AIDS (CRIA) in December 1991 by a group of physicians, activists, and people living with HIV who were frustrated by the slow pace of government and academic AIDS research. Under the pioneering leadership of prominent AIDS physicians and researchers like Drs. Joseph Sonnabend and Mathilde Krim, and following the lead of trailblazers like Michael Callen of the PWA Coalition, ACRIA has brought an activist approach to the study of new treatments for HIV and AIDS. Since that time they have contributed to the development of more than a dozen medications that have received FDA approval, helping countless thousands of HIV-positive people live longer, healthier lives. www.acria.org
