BOWIE DOC COMING --- A documentary film of the groundbreaking exhibition David Bowie, created by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), London, will be screened in movie theaters across the U.S. on September 23 to coincide with the exhibition opening at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. A select 100 theaters across the US will exclusively screen the film.
Described by The London Times as stylish & outrageous and The Guardian as a triumph, the exhibition features a remarkable collection of photographs, stage costumes, and other rare possessions from the David Bowie Archive. The exhibition was the fastest selling in the V&A's history and is now on a global tour that has already traveled to Toronto, Sao Paulo, and Berlin to universal acclaim, opening next at the MCA in Chicago until January 4, 2015.
The film takes the audience on an extraordinary journey through the David Bowie is exhibition with special guests including legendary Japanese fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, Pulp front-man Jarvis Cocker, producer Tony Visconti, and other collaborators, to explore the stories behind some of the key objects that document Bowie's artistic career. The exhibition curators, Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh, provide fascinating insight into the most memorable music videos and original costumes, as well as more personal items such as never-before-seen handwritten lyrics, album cover artwork, set designs and diary entries, which reveal the creativity and evolution of Bowie's ideas.
The documentary was filmed on the closing night of the V&A exhibition in London and directed by Done & Dusted's Hamish Hamilton, the BAFTA award winning director of the Academy Awards and the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
We caught the exhibition in Toronto and were just dazzled. In fact, we were there the entire afternoon. If you're a Bowie-fan … you MUST see this.
The exhibition's curators Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh from the V&A Department of Theatre & Performance said: "We are delighted that as this extraordinary exhibition travels the world, people will get the chance to immerse themselves in a cinematic experience from the original London show. The film offers fascinating detail about key objects from the David Bowie Archive, commentary from special guest contributors and a fantastic soundtrack!"
HANNIBAL RISING --- Lakeshore Records will release four volumes of music from the hit NBC television series HANNIBAL, composed by Brian Reitzell (Lost In Translation, Boss). The Hannibal Season One Original Soundtrack (Volumes 1 & 2) will be available digitally on August 5th and on CD September 2, 2014. The Hannibal Season Two Original Soundtrack (Volumes 1 & )2 will be available digitally on September 2nd and on CD September 23, 2014.
“Visually it’s so artfully done and quite fantastical, so I see it like an opera staging, otherwise I might be more disturbed,” said Reitzell of Hannibal. “Listening to the music alone is scarier than in the context of the show.”
One of the most memorable instruments from the first season of the show is a bullroarer. Reitzell explains, “It is an aboriginal instrument. Every continent on Earth has a form of bullroarer — it’s the oldest instrument known to man.” The one he uses, he got from eBay for $5. The instrument is spun around your head and creates a low hum that has movement in space and not just sound. Recorded in surround sound for the series. “So when you listen to it, it spins around your head, and it’s really powerful.”
Acting as both music supervisor and composer, he often blurs the lines between score, source music, and sound design. His vision is to create a seamless landscape of songs, score, and found music for each soundtrack. Brian’s explorations of new sounds add unique character to visual images. He often has instruments custom built or even invented for individual film scores and wholeheartedly embraces the Brian Eno philosophy of the recording studio as his instrument. Brian has thrived on collaborations with musicians from outside the Hollywood film composer network and has worked with some of today’s most acclaimed musical artists including Air, Richard James (Aphex Twin), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Elliott Smith, Britt Daniel (Spoon), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Explosions In The Sky, Fever Ray, Robert Plant, Daniel Lopatin and Ensemble Matheus.
Bryan Fuller’s visionary series is unlike anything else on TV right now; there are quite a few shows that will love to have what this show does … but, they do not. Artful, brilliant, totally captivating … it is without comparison. We cannot recommend it highly enough.
STORMING IN --- Varèse Sarabande Records will release Into The Storm – the original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on August 5th and on CD August 19, 2014. The soundtrack features the original score composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Fast Five). Into The Storm opens in theaters on August 8.
“Into The Storm was an opportunity to do a completely conceptual score,” said Tyler. “The idea was that an approaching storm is represented by the premise of being stalked in the savanna by a lion or tiger - primal, but patient. African flutes whistle in the far distance over completely still strings holding like a lion stalking, waiting patiently to strike. Then without warning, the power of the storm is upon you before you are even aware. This was a really fun and rewarding concept for me to compose.”
Tyler is a composer and conductor of over 60 films and numerous television series. He is a frequent visitor to the Marvel universe on such films as Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and is currently scoring the eagerly awaited Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Tyler also scored Eagle Eye for producer Steven Spielberg, and the box office hits Fast Five and Fast & Furious for director Justin Lin. He was nominated for a 2014 BAFTA Award and was inducted into the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2010.
