Ring Pop® lollipops will once again tap top pop acts to help choose the candy’s next sensational flavor. Bazooka Candy Brands, maker of Ring Pop, has partnered with top teen acts Bella Thorne and The Ready Set for a Facebook flavor face-off. Both participants have selected a unique new Ring Pop flavor and will rally their fans to visit the Ring Pop Facebook page and vote for their flavor choice. The competition kicks off today, January 17 and runs through February 4. The winner of the competition will see their Ring Pop flavor arrive on store shelves this summer and will receive a donation to their favorite charity. This Facebook flavor-faceoff is a follow-up to last year’s highly popular program which featured flavors selected by Mindless Behavior, Kicking Daisies, and the winning duo, Megan & Liz.
“The Ring Pop brand has long been associated with pop culture, and we thought there was no better way to choose the next flavor than by calling on some of today’s pop talent to mobilize fans to vote for their favorite,” said Scott Utke, Director of Marketing, Bazooka Candy Brands. “Last year’s competition exceeded our greatest expectations with thousands of fans from all over the country casting their vote, and we are excited to see what flavor will come out on top in 2013.”
For three weeks, the Ring Pop Brand will host the “battle royale” on its Facebook page for fans across the country to voice their choice. Both Bella Thorne and The Ready Set will reach out to their fans via Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube in an effort to build support for their customized Ring Pop. Both participants taste tested flavors with Bella Thorne selecting Strawberry Lemonade and The Ready Set choosing Cookie and Cream. The participating acts are also as different from each other as each of their flavors.
Bella Thorne, star of the hit Disney Channel original series Shake It Up, has sky rocketed to fame with her tween/teen fans playing aspiring dancer ‘Cece Jones.’ Shake It Up originally premiered with 6.2 million viewers. In January 2012, Thorne and her Shake It Up co-star Zendaya Coleman starred in the Disney Channel movie of the week Frenemies which premiered with 4.7 million viewers. The triple threat now expands her talent in the music arena with her first solo single “TTYLXOX” which was included on the Shake It Up soundtrack and not only made it on the Billboard 100 charts, but has sold over 300,000 singles to date. Thorne has been topping the charts at Radio Disney this year with “Bubblegum Boy” and recently collaborated with IM5 (brought together by American Idol's Simon Fuller, celeb blogger Perez Hilton, and tour producer Jamie King) with the single “Can’t Stay Away.”
The Ready Set is 22 year-old Indiana-born drummer, singer, songwriter and keyboardist Jordan Witzigreuter, who creates infectious, danceable pop designed for fun. “Love Like Woe,” the first single off his 2011 debut EP I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming hit #15 on the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart and is certified platinum. Over the past year Jordan has been touring non-stop, playing with fellow pop up & comers like The Wanted and Carly Rae Jepsen as well as All-American Rejects, All Time Low and Boys Like Girls. His new single “Give Me Your Hand (Best Song Ever)” is currently climbing the Top 40 radio chart and the video for the track recently premiered on MTV.
The 2012 Choose the Next Big Flavor competition, where tween music acts Megan & Liz, Mindless Behavior, and Kicking Daisies battled it out for the winning flavor, yielded unprecedented fan engagement. The contest garnered more than 62,000 votes on Facebook, and over the course of its four-week run, reached 1.7 million people. After an extremely close competition, Megan & Liz’s flavor choice, Raspberry Lemonade, was ultimately selected as fan favorite, and the limited edition flavor hit retailers nationwide in August.
This Facebook flavor-faceoff is not the first campaign where the Ring Pop brand has worked with top pop culture acts. The candy has also served as the inspiration for Mariah Carey’s Lollipop Bling fragrance from Elizabeth Arden and the two companies established a cross promotional partnership at the time the fragrance launched. In addition, Ring Pops have been spotted by the paparazzi on the hands of many celebrities over the years including Katy Perry and Madonna. Bazooka Candy Brands has also created special edition, Swarovski-encrusted Ring Pop to celebrate momentous occasions, including the Royal Wedding in April 2011. The Ring Pop lollipop was introduced in 1977 and has consistently ranked among the top-selling non chocolate candies.
