The new issue of Us Weekly has all of the details how Bachelorette Emily Maynard’s relationship with fiancé, Jef Holm, went from fake to finished. Multiple sources confirm to Us the pair have officially ended their five-month engagement, but the decision was long in the making: Following Maynard’s sexting scandal in August that Us Weekly broke exclusively, the duo had agreed to keep the charade going in public. According to Holm’s former flame Kaylee Shepherd, Holm, 28, decided to keep quiet about Maynard’s indiscretion in exchange for half her Bachelorette salary. But after weeks of forced happy smiles, things got so bad that Maynard couldn’t even stomach a fake relationship. “Emily just decided that she’d had enough,” says one insider, who reveals the final breakup conversation took place after they attended a Carolina Panthers football game October 7.
What led to the official split? For one, Holm had no problem voicing his disapproval of Maynard’s parenting. “He would taunt her and call her a bad mom,” says another insider. “He was so mean.” The pair also had trouble maintaining trust, even before Holm uncovered Maynard’s racy text messages (multiple sources confirm internet reports that NFL pro Matt Leinart was the mystery guy). “She flirts with other guys to help her ego,” says the friend. “She gets off on it. She wants to come off as this goodygoody Southern belle, but that’s not really the case.” Meanwhile, Holm had his own temptations. On October 4, he was seen flirting with a Maynard look-alike at a Laguna Beach, California, charity event. “He touched her hip and pulled her toward him,” says an observer. Days earlier, he took things even further with another mystery girl in San Diego. A solo Holm “hooked up with a girl in a bathroom,” reveals an insider. “They wanted their 15 minutes of fame to last,” says one Holm insider. But the charade couldn’t. When a friend recently checked in with Maynard, she admitted she couldn’t hold out much longer. Says a source, “She was just over it. Enough was enough.”

Also in this issue are all of the details about Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s upcoming nuptials. After a four-year love affair, Biel and Timberlake, 31, are set to tie the knot in a rustic ceremony in front of close friends and family in southern Italy October 19. And the self-described tomboy, who also admitted she “never dreamed of the ring, the wedding, the white dress,” will have exactly the type of pared-down and private ceremony she desired. In fact, the affair was such a cloak-and-dagger operation that during the weeklong festivities that kicked off October 16, some guests — including music producer Timbaland — were flown into Germany, then whisked to an undisclosed Italian location on private jets. “They took extra precautions and didn’t tell anyone where they were going,” says a source. Seconds a pal of the groom: “Justin wanted to be very slick with it!”

Madonna and Sean Penn are still hung up on each other. The single actor, 52, was transfixed by his former love, 54, as he stood front-row with a friend at her MDNA concert in L.A. October 11. “Their chemistry was off the charts,” says a witness. “Madonna seemed to be performing entirely for Sean. And he was saying things like ‘Amazing!’ and ‘She’s so hot!’” It’s not the first time the pair — dubbed “the Poison Penns” for their constant fighting during their 1985-to-1989 marriage — have been spotted together. In January 2010, they shared a three-hour dinner at Adour Alain Ducasse in NYC. “They’ve remained close friends,” explains a pal, adding, “but they are fire and fire together romantically. She can only be with someone she can control.” Another obstacle: her boyfriend of two years, Brahim Zaibat, 26. “Madonna’s friends wish she’d get back with Sean,” adds the insider. “He will always be the love of her life.”

Can Katy Perry boldly go where no woman has gone before? The pop star, 28, who’s casually dating John Mayer, 35, “believes she can change him,” a source tells Hot Stuff. “She doesn’t want to be just another one of his conquests.” (His exes include Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and Taylor Swift.) Part of Perry’s plan? Play hard to get. Explains the source, “She recently told John she was open to see other people.” And her plot has paid off. Adds a second insider, “Once Katy turned her back on him, he started chasing her again!” Indeed, he caught up with Perry in NYC October 13 at the Dolls’ Hotel Chantelle bash, where they “kissed throughout the night,” says a witness. The next day, he watched her NetJets concert, then took her on a double date at Perla. “He was really animated at dinner,” says an observer. “He smiled at her a lot.”

Drew Lachey thinks Bristol Palin doesn’t belong in the ballroom. After his October 9 elimination from Dancing with the Stars, the singer, 36 — who won season 2 in 2006 — vented backstage. “Drew threw a fit,” a source tells Hot Stuff. “He was complaining that Bristol has no talent and no reason to be there. He was saying, ‘Am I on the right show? I thought this was Dancing With the Stars!’” But a DWTS insider sticks up for Palin, 22: “She’s not the best dancer, but she’s not terrible. She gets a bad rap because of her family.”
Pippa’s Vow of Silence
Don’t press Pippa Middleton! Duchess Kate’s sister, 29, has canceled five TV interviews scheduled to promote her party-planning book, Celebrate (out October 30). Blame a few royally juicy scandals — specifically, Kate’s topless photos in September and Prince Harry’s wild Las Vegas fleshfest less than a month earlier. “Pippa knew she would have been asked about the pictures,” a source tells Hot Stuff. “She doesn’t want to address those issues publicly.”
