This afternoon, Lighthouse Guild hosted The Henry A. Grunwald Award for Public Service honoring Norman Pearlstine, Chief Content Officer, Time Inc. along with a special recognition to Liz Smith with Barbara Walters as Master of Ceremonies. The Henry A. Grunwald Award for Public Service, inaugurated in 2001 by Lighthouse Guild, recognizes individuals who are committed to advancing causes that benefit society overall and of particular significance for Lighthouse Guild to advancing public awareness of vision impairment and vision rehabilitation.

The annual Henry A. Grunwald Award for Public Service is bestowed upon an outstanding individual who has committed themselves to advancing causes that benefit society overall. The award was presented at a luncheon held on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at the Metropolitan Club in New York City. The annual event, hosted by Lighthouse Guild, honored Norman Pearlstine, Chief Content Officer, Time Inc., along with a special recognition to Liz Smith. Barbara Walters served as Master of Ceremonies.

Norman Pearlstine, who served as the Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc. from 1995 to 2005, recently returned in 2014 to the company to serve in a new position, Chief Content Officer. In this role, he is charged with driving the development of new content experiences and consumer products across Time Inc. brands as well as overseeing the company’s editorial policies and standards. Pearlstine’s journalism career includes serving as Time Inc.’s Editor-in-Chief from 1995 to 2005, and working at The Wall Street Journal in several prestigious roles. Pearlstine was also Forbes magazine’s Executive Editor, launched SmartMoney, and, most recently, from 2008 to 2013, he served as Bloomberg LLP’s Chief Content Officer.

“It is an extraordinary honor to get an award with Henry Grunwald’s name on it,” said Norman Pearlstine, Chief Content Office, Time Inc. “It’s important to pick up where Henry left off in so many ways, and one of those ways is in acknowledging the importance or raising public awareness of vision loss.”

The award is named for the late Mr. Grunwald, a former member of Lighthouse International’s Board of Directors, who was the first to receive the honor.

During his lifetime, Mr. Grunwald was the US Ambassador to Austria, Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc., and noted author of Twilight: Losing Sight, Gaining Insight. This personal account of his experience with the onset of macular degeneration gave a much-needed public voice to the private struggles shared by millions of Americans. Through his groundbreaking book, Mr. Grunwald helped raise widespread and invaluable public awareness of vision impairment.
