MADONNA SAY'S NEW YORK CITY DIED

Pop singer Madonna moved from New York to London, because New York City has lost its status as the world’s cultural capital. The Michigan native moved to New York as a 19-year-old in 1977 and lived in the big city for much of her successful career, only relocating to London in 1997 after falling in love with British film maker Guy Ritchie, who she wed three years later. Now Madonna has revealed she turned her back on Manhattan because the city is no longer the vibrant center of the arts it once was. She tells Vanity Fair magazine, "New York City is not the same place it used to be. It still has great energy. I still put my finger in the socket."But it doesn’t feel alive, crackling with that synergy between the art world and music world and fashion world that was happening in the ’80s."
Editors Note: I agree Madonna. I remember dancing with you at Danceteria in the 80's. Everything has changed in New York City because the most talented people that ran the parties have either died from Aids or can't afford to live here anymore. Many of the artists have moved to Miami or Hollywood where they can get cheap rent. Little studio apartments are going for two thousand a month at least. One bedrooms are going for three thousand. The greedy landlords are forcing clubs, restaurants and every other business to close because they can't afford the rent increases. One club I know was paying 8 thousand a month, and when his lease was up the landlord wanted 38 thousand a month to renew. The talent is gone and that means the fun times are also gone. Very rarely do I go to a event that can compare to the parties of the 80's. New York City is only for the rich now and the annoying tourist's !

As much as I LOVE Madonna, i have to disagree with her. New York is like no other place in the world. It may not be what it once was but that is because New York is always changing. What it is now is probably no better than it was in the 80's but it can't be any worse. New York is the fashion capitol of the world, not only because it is home to visionaries such as Ralph Lauren and Marc jacobs, but also because it is home to many budding and innovative fashion designers (unlike Paris and Milian). Celebrities are'nt fleeing New York, in fact their actually coming to the great city. Sick of Hollywood, Las vegas, and Miami where everything seems a little "fake", Celebrities are finding refuge in the big apple.... I'm tired of writing..... Miss me James?

As a native NYer... I agree strongly with Madonna. I myself have seen my city change over and over again while growing up, but it hasn't been until about the last 8 years that I've really sensed the life force of what was once the most unique city on earth, disolve. I call it New Glass City for all the uncessary, sunlight robbing ugly glass buildings being newly erected. For What? Do we need another glass building? Why? You can't walk anywhere without bumping into someone or a wall. Although the city is safer than it's been since the 1960s, however for who? No one can afford it now unless you live with multiple roommates... or you're a wall street brat. Besides, it's boring now. Personality and Character are replaced by yet another Bank or Banana Republic. The artists cannot afford New York City anymore. Creativity has disappeared, washed-out by absured rental/purchase apartment costs. We've lost our special texture, that thing in the air when you're out and about. The interesting people you would meet. It's gone, dead and burried. No longer the coolest city in the world, just a big very expensive glass thing with nothing but a shallow center of hot air.
