CJ ATKINSON IS THE INNOVATOR IN DJ SCENE
With a recent performance with UK Techno legend Fergie at the hot King King club in Hollywood, CJ Atkinson, known to music-insiders as DJCJ, has proved to be a true innovator to watch in the competitive Los Angeles DJ scene. Early on CJ’s strong work ethic and passion for his craft earned him respect in the city as one of the rare pioneering DJs, landing him frequent gigs at clubs such as Incognito, Josephs, Forbidden City, and DJ Vinyl. Born into a family of musicians, CJ’s interest in music was nurtured from a very early age. His father Jim Atkinson played guitar and sung vocals for the 70s rock group Bearfoot. Another member in the band was Terry Danko, who not only married Caroline Ghattas, the sister of CJ’s mother Eva Ghattas, but was also the brother of Richard Danko, the famous singer-songwriter and bassist of The Band.
CJ’s music career began when he moved to California from Canada at the age of 22. Young and full of energy, he dove into the LA music scene headfirst and has never looked back. With a degree in Sound Engineering from the Tara Recording Academy in Ottawa Canada, CJ instantly proved to be valuable to many venues in LA, quickly becoming an in-demand live sound engineer. He soon found himself interested in DJing, and before long his prodigious record collecting habit built an impressive music library. After learning from the DJs who played at the venues where he worked as a sound engineer, CJ began mixing his own music at home. In a short time was he was ready to shop around his demos to all the movers and shakers among the LA promoters.
CJ was soon cutting his DJ chops at much-talked about events like the Last Band Standing at The Garage, After Hour Power at The Palace, Spundae Hollywood at Circus, and Naked at Grand Avenue. He got the name DJCJ from promoter Rod Flynn and DJ Adam Rush, and the name quickly stuck. When the trend in the LA scene started turn towards House music, CJ stuck to his roots and his passion for Techno, Tech-House and Hard Trance.
Currently, CJ is mastering new tracks at his professional home-studio, with hopes to release them on his own label within the next few months, as one of the few DJs who actually produce their own music. He feels this work takes the sounds of Techno, Trance and Tech-House in new directions, and he is eager to see how people react. Several tracks will be released soon on this website, where dates in Los Angeles and other major US cities will also be announced.
