Daytime television host Michael Strahan is the featured cover star on the August issue of EBONY magazine, giving readers the scoop on how he earned the title, “Mr. Entertainment.”
Inside the issue, Strahan discusses his accomplishments as a football player and how he managed to transition from being at the top of the NFL to the co-host for both Live with Kelly and Michael and Good Morning America. He also sheds light on his bitter divorce from his ex-wife, Jean Muggli and how he opened his heart to love again with fiancée Nicole Murphy.
“When you get divorced, people get upset, angry and say crazy things,” said Strahan regarding the ugly rumors that circulated during the end of his marriage to Muggli. “You have to take it. But it wasn’t easy. It was hard as hell.”
Strahan credits the experience for giving him both strength and insight, which led to his current relationship with Murphy who was once married to actor Eddie Murphy.
“For us it’s key that we maintain normalcy,” said Strahan. “We have a great life. People can buy into their own celebrity, and that’s a dangerous thing.”
With a Super Bowl title under his belt, the number one entertainment talk show in the country and a NFL Hall of Fame induction coming this summer, Strahan is undoubtedly accomplished. When asked about the formula to his success, Strahan credits his father and his educational background as vital components.
“My father is an amazing man,” added Strahan. “His whole philosophy was never ‘if’; it was always ‘when.’” He continued saying, “…Just the belief that somebody has in you can make a difference. Then you start saying, ‘when,’ not ‘if,’”
Strahan also adds, “I went to Texas Southern, an HBCU. People can say what they want about those schools, but TSU taught me how to go from being a boy to a man.”
Overall, however, Strahan admits he’s a simple guy.
“I’m shy by nature,” he admits. “At heart, I just want to chill and have fun. I’ve had hard times, but I got through them.”
In addition to Strahan’s feature, the August issue of EBONY is the Black Wealth issue and readers will find articles on how to create a financial plan for life’s unavoidable ups and downs; business advice from successful millionaires and how your credit could be affecting your dating life. Plus they have tributes to the late Dr. Maya Angelou and Ruby Dee.
Readers can find the August issue on newsstands beginning July 8.
