One panel titled, ”An Artist’s Perspective of Stage to Screen” was a conversation about the future of capturing stage performances for new musicals. BroadwayHD founders, Bonnie Comley and Stewart F. Lane, were joined by Max Vernon (KPOP, View From Upstairs), Ellie Heyman (Beardo) and Leah Lane (Carmen High) to talk about how streaming performances are making Broadway shows accessible to a global audience. BroadwayHD is the first and only streaming platform with over 270 full-length musicals and plays available for streaming over the Internet and the subscription-based company is adding new content every month.
The panelists spoke about the value of high quality digital theater productions with regard to their work. As a composer, Vernon said he wants the entire world to have the ability to see his shows. Heyman felt the ability to access Broadway talent will encourage more people to attend their local theater and Leah Lane, expressed the educational value of young performers learning from seeing other professionals at the pinnacle of their careers. All the panelists agreed that the best way to experience a musical is in the Broadway theater but if you missed a limited run, or can’t get to New York or a major Broadway touring theater, then a digital capture is great alternative.
