On Saturday, August 16, friends and supporters of LIGALY – Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth will gather at Diamond Ranch in Water Mill to celebrate another successful year in the life of this 15-year-old organization that provides education, advocacy and social support services to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth and young adults throughout Long Island New York. ON THE BAY 2008 will be hosted by Diamond Ranch’s Stan Simon and the members of the On the Bay Committee, comprised of co-chair Joseph Pasquino, Honorary Committee members Carson Kressley, Congressman Tim Bishop, NYS Assembly Patricia Eddington, Congressman Steve Israel, Marc Levine, Cliff Love, Deanna Annis, Duke Morell, Arne Besser, Robert Marc, Mario Bosquez, Lizz Salaway, Frederico Azevedo and Edward Wilkerson, LIGALY executive director David Kilmnick and Robert Vitelli. The invitation-only guests will enjoy an afternoon highlighted by a Luxury Silent Auction of premium items and services, sumptuous food and drink, and VIP Guest gift bags. This is the 4th annual On the Bay event, which has consistently boosted awareness, interest and funding for LIGALY – an affiliate organization of the Long Island GLBT Health and Human Services Network, an umbrella group that provides administrative and fundraising support to its three affiliate organizations: LIGALY, the Long Island GLBT Community Center, and SAGE-LI (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders - Long Island). LIGALY was founded in 1993 to fill several vital social needs, including helping GLBT youth come to terms with their sexuality at the critical stage of self-discovery, and providing GLBT youth with a genuine community of friends and advocates. Most important, LIGALY works to protect GLBT youth from the harassment, violence and murder that too frequently destroy their safety, health, self-esteem, and their very lives, as was the case with the highly-publicized killings of Charlie Howard, Brandon Teena and Matthew Shephard. According to the Human Rights Campaign, hate crimes against the GLBT community rank third, right behind those based on race and religion, and young people are particularly vulnerable to often-hostile neighborhood, school and home environments. To address these issues, the Bay Shore-based LIGALY offers a comprehensive assortment of programs and activities, including peer education/sensitivity programs and others geared to educators and families; leadership development and youth empowerment programs; a comprehensive anti-violence program; a large, fully-equipped meeting center; and a mental health center, help hotline, Internet cafĂ©, and book and video library. LIGALY also sponsors an annual talent contest, a dance troupe and several newsletters. Hospitality at On the Bay 2008 will feature cocktails by Pearl Vodka and wines by Bodega Catena Zapata, Cousino Macul, and Cavas Hill. The always-popular VIP gift bag will be brimming with products from Jet One Jets, Here! TV, Centaur Music, Red Door Spas, Pearl Vodka and others. The focal point of the day will be the Luxury Silent Auction with more than 100 available goods and services, including: Baccarat wine glasses, a 3-night stay for two at the Canyon Ranch in Lenox MA, Calvin Klein cashmere robe, Joan Rivers jewelry, leather goods and jewelry by Ralph Lauren, a Gucci G-Tag wallet, a dress and handbag by Bill Blass, leather duffle from Marc Jacobs International, a weekend stay for two at a luxury W Hotel, Elizabeth Arden products from Red Door Spas, and 4 VIP tickets to the Hampton Classic.
