U2 On Subway Famed Irish rock band U2 played the New York City subway system this week. The band, whose most recent album Songs of Innocence came out as a free surprise release on iTunes last year, made a special stop in New York City for an episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Dressed in disguise, the band set up their instruments in the 42nd Street subway stop in Manhattan, then proceeded to play their own songs as if they were covering them. “Nobody knows this is going to happen. Nobody knows it’s U2,” said Fallon, also in disguise. “They’re just going to get out there and do it.” Fallon and U2 couldn’t keep up the ruse for long, though. After playing “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” to lukewarm reception from commuters, they took off their sunglasses and showed their faces. A crowd quickly gathered around the band, who then launched into a spirited acoustic rendition of their hit single “Desire.”

What isn't very clear is when it will be released. Universal Music in Columbia tweeted "#noticias para los seguidores de @U2. El disco se va a titular #Sirens y estará listo en el mes de septiembre" which translates roughly to "For fans of U2. The album Sirens will be ready in September." Interestingly, the tweet was deleted fairly quickly and it was later revealed that the tweet was wrong. The question is, was it wrong or was it an accidental leak? Meanwhile, an article in the Irish Examiner says that the band's new album will be out in November despite Bono suffering from writer's block. Bono At Giants Stadium U2 broke the attendance record at Giants Stadium in New Jersey that was set in 1995 by Pope John Paul II. The Pope drew 82,948 and U2 brought in a crowd of 84,472. Giants Stadium is also Bruce Springsteen's home turf and Thursday was The Boss' 60th birthday. All of this was not lost on U2 lead singer Bono, who said near the end of the show, "News just in — we've broken every record for attendance in this stadium — including the Pope. Sorry Bruce — we know it's your birthday and all...I know they're knocking this place down. A fundraising auction of music memorabilia from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Edge, Bono and Paul McCartney smashed pre-sale expectations and brought in $2.4 million, a portion of which will go to a charity that replaces musical equipment lost or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. "It was the best sale we've ever done," said Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions, which ran the event benefiting Music Rising. The event on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Cafe was so popular, Julien said, that bidding went on for three hours after it had been supposed to stop. Music Rising was co-founded by The Edge, the U2 guitarist who donated his favorite instrument, a 1975 Gibson Les Paul that he has played on for years. Pre-sale estimates put the guitar at $60,000 to $80,000—it sold for $288,000, including the commission. Other highlights included a guitar owned by Jimi Hendrix that went for $480,000; a pair of sunglasses donated by Bono that went for $24,000...

Noel Gallagher has told Bono to "shut the fuck up" about Africa.The Oasis guitarist is sick of the U2 frontman campaigning to end Third World debt in the continent, and insists Bono's fans don't want to be constantly lectured by their idol. Noel told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "With U2 it's like play 'One', shut the fuck up about Africa. People don't want to hear about it all the time."The outspoken songwriter has also blasted Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke for brow-beating his fans with his political beliefs. He has urged him to ditch his serious attitude to music and write a 'proper' rock song. He said: "Thom Yorke sat at a piano singing, 'This is fucked up', for half-an-hour. We all know that, Mr Yorke. Who wants to sing the news? No matter how much you sit there twiddling, going, 'We're all doomed', at the end of the day people will always want to hear him play 'Creep'. Get over it....
