LOVING: STORY OF AN INTERRACIAL COUPLE IN 1967

Image
**** MOVIES This movie will make you cry! **** LOVING From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, Loving celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (portrayed by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry - and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since. Loving will open in theaters in select cities on November 4, and will expand across the country later in November.

**** Same-Sex Marriage A nd T he Supreme Court: The Possible Outcomes Story By: Brian Woodward **** Edie Windsor And Thea Spyer-A Love Story While discussing the Supreme Court cases that involved same-sex marriage, I have discovered that many people did not understand the precise nature of the court proceedings. I will outline the possible outcomes and implications of the two cases that went before the Supreme Court. Hollingsworth v. Perry: The case that presents the possibility of having the greatest impact on gay marriage is Hollingsworth v. Perry. This is the case that is considering whether or not Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that reversed the legality of marriage for same-sex couples in California, is constitutional. It must be noted that there are three separate counsels who gave oral arguments before the Supreme Court. Charles Cooper, on behalf of the petitioners (proponents of Proposition 8), Ted Olson...

GAY MARRIAGE AND BEHIND THE SUPREME COURT

**** Gay Marriage: Why the Supreme Court Should and Likely Will Let the People Decide By: Brian Woodward **** The Supreme Court Two and a half years ago, on Times Square Gossip , I praised the California judge who overturned a ban on same sex marriage as voted for and enumerated by Proposition 8. I also accurately predicted that the overturning of Proposition 8 would come before the Supreme Court. The oral arguments in Hollingsworth v. Perry (Proposition 8 case) have been presented and as usual it will likely take the Supreme Court a matter of months to come out with a decision. It will not be a sweeping victory for same-sex marriage. Although the court has proved to be at least somewhat unpredictable, given their unexpected ruling on the Affordable Care Act, they signaled quite clearly that they are not prepared to hand down a ruling with far reaching consequences. Although many proponents of gay marriage (which now constitutes a majority of Am...

AMERICA PROTECTING FREE SPEECH TO LIE

Image
**** THE CHICAGO GOSSIP Story By: Kathy Posner ****  United States Supreme Court Washington Last week most people were eagerly awaiting the Supreme Court ruling on Obamacre and totally missed the Court’s 6-3 decision that the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 was unconstitutional. That Act made it a federal crime to falsely claim or wear unearned military medals. The wording of the 69 page decision seems to make lying legal! BACKGROUND: The case, United States vs. Alvarez, was about Xavier Alvarez, a California Water Board member, who had falsely claimed to have received the Medal of Honor. In 2007 Alvarez pled guilty but reserved the right to appeal. His sentence was three years probation, a $5,000 fine and community service. On appeal, his lawyer argued that the Stolen Valor Act was unconstitutional because it violates a person’s right to lie. "The Stolen Valor Act criminalizes pure speech in the form of bare falsity, a mere telling of a lie...
