NEW LAMBERT --- Look for Adam Lambert’s long-awaited next album to be released on a new label; not his long-time label RCA. Lambert revealed to Ryan Seacrest, on his radio show, that he had inked as new deal, "I'm not going to say too much because I try to keep things under wraps. I'm working on this album and I'm really excited about it. I got signed to another label, which I'm not going to reveal right now, but it's a really good deal and it's a good project. I'm working with an amazing executive producer."
His second album, Trespassing, for RCA, enjoyed respectable sales; close to 78,000 on its debut day and made many year-end Best Of lists, including Rolling Stone and People.com. It reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200 as well as inching near the top of the iTunes chart.
For an artist of Lambert’s talents, he certainly deserves a label that can deliver for him. His talent is exceptional; proved yet again by his recently completed tour with Queen.
No doubt it about, the kid’s got it!
DEPECHE RETURNS --- Venerable act Depeche Mode have announced the global release of their CD/DVD Depeche Mode Live In Berlin on November 17th via Columbia Records. Directed by their longtime creative collaborator, the filmmaker Anton Corbijn, Depeche Mode Live in Berlin features two hours’ worth of never before released, stunning live concert footage.
The show was filmed on location at the o2 World Berlin on November 25th and 27th, 2013 during the band’s extremely successful Delta Machine Tour which saw them play to over 2.4 million people in 32 countries. Depeche Mode was touring in support of their lauded 13th studio album, Delta Machine, which debuted at #1 in 12 countries worldwide in March 2013. The CD/DVD will include not only performances of tracks from Delta Machine but also some of their most memorable and biggest hits including “Personal Jesus” and “Policy of Truth.”
“Alive in Berlin is a record of Depeche Mode visiting Berlin for two concerts and the impact it has on fans following the band. Berlin has a special place in the hearts of Depeche Mode. Likewise, Depeche Mode has a strong following in the German capital and the film tries to capture the highlights of these concerts as well as that special connection through interviews with fans and bands alike,” states director Corbijn.
Pioneers of the post-punk era, Depeche Mode, have gone on to become one of modern music’s most influential groups with global sales in excess of 100 million. Formed in 1981, Depeche Mode –Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher – continue to win critical and commercial acclaim around the world both in the studio and on the road. The band’s 13 released studio albums have reached the Top Ten in over 20 countries, including the US and UK.
MILLER AT THE MET --- Monday night we were witness to just a terrific, one-event at NYC’s Met: Steve Miller, Lawrence Juber and Marty Stuart and his band, the Fabulous Superlatives.
Guitarist Juber played with Paul McCartney’s Wings for 4 years was just sensational, as he delivered amazing instrumental versions of George Harrison’s "While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and, a cover of “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” by the noted-English composer Pete Townsend. When was the last time you heard a cover of that song?
His playing just so economical and tasteful, but, it seemed odd that he didn't perform a McCartney track.
We've been fans of Steve Miller forever and when he ambled onstage with Juber, he was so laid back, but so forceful in his playing and singing it was breathtaking. Before he achieved worldwide fame with songs like “Take The Money and Run” and “The Joker,” his was a pioneering blues guitarist and his abilities were nothing short of amazing.
Marty Stuart is a long-revered member of the country music scene (according to Miller he has amassed one of the best-ever archival collections of artifacts from that genre); and, he’s played with everyone from Johnny Cash to Lester Flatt, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins and with this band, has assembled just a wonderful unit. Dressed in their country finery, he was sensational … and, a terrific mandolin player!
The entire ensemble appeared onstage at the end performing Miller’s “Joker.” It’s amazing how well they all blended, and this being totally acoustic, the nuances of each song performed was awesome. Great show; one of the best I've seen this year.
JUDGE DOWNEY --- Last night we saw a sneak preview of the new Robert Downey Jr./Robert Duvall movie The Judge and really loved it. Downey’s a hot-shot lawyer who returns home for his mother’s funeral and re-visits with his estranged father (Duvall) who is a 40-year judge in his local town.
There’s a murder, most likely committed by Duvall and Downey ends up representing him. While the story may be a tad predictable, the performances are top-notch, with Duvall (an icon to say the least) leading the pack. His character doesn't say all the much, but each word is masterfully delivered. The strong cast, including Vincent D’Onofrio, Vera Farmiga, Dax Shepard, Leighton Messter, Ken Howard, and a superb Billy Bob Thornton, are stand-out excellent.
The direction by David Dobkin is spot-on excellent; with several sweeping shots of the standout locations shots just exquisite.
As we officially head into the holiday season, look for The Judge to pack a wallop!
CLOSING NOTES --- Marcus Goldhaber will be at Steve Walter’s Cutting Room tomorrow. His new CD (his fourth), A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening (Fallen Apple Records/The Orchard) is terrific. He'll also be on hand for Donnie Kehr’s Rockers On Broadway event, November 17 at Le Poisson Rouge. Frankie Valli, Micky Dolenz and Bruce Morrow are this year’s award winners.
Speaking of Dolenz, his play with Joyce DeWitt, Comedy Is Hard, wraps up this coming Sunday and he'll be profiled on Oprah Winfrey’s Where Are They Now series on her OWN network Sunday, November 9 …
I watched Billy Idol (with the brilliant Steve Stevens) deliver an acoustic, yet riveting performance of his "White Wedding" on the Today show yesterday (he's back tub-thumping a new bio called Dancing with Myself) and found myself thinking about how many of these great artists were fine-tuned by a great manager. For The Beatles it was certainly Brian Epstein; Idol was for a time handled by Bill Aucoin (who also managed Kiss). Paul McGuinness, was introduced by the group U2 by legendary promoter-Bill Graham and went onto handle the group for years. Now, I don't mean to imply at all that any of these artists lacked talent ... but, a good manager is worth his weight in gold.
