MARY LAMBERT PERFORMS ON Z100'S ELVIS DURAN

Mary Lambert On Elvis Duran

Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Mary Lambert performed her single “She Keeps Me Warm” on Elvis Duran and the Z100 Morning Show earlier yesterday. Off her recently released EP Welcome To The Age of My Body, the song was made famous as the hook in Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ hit “Same Love”. The 24-year-old stopped by to talk to Elvis about her recent success, her past struggles, and her historic performance at the 56th Grammys with Madonna, Queen Latifah, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. When asked about what life’s been like recently, the singer said she’s been able to “provide a social impact with music and that’s so incredibly gratifying.” Mary and Elvis were also interviewed for Good Day NY and her performance was featured on the show’s morning broadcast. ON HER CAREER RIGHT NOW:

“I don’t know what I did in my life to be in this position, and have all the incredible things, all of the opportunities and to be on this platform. I get paid to do something that I love so, so deeply and it’s not just like making pop music or even just being on a platform to sing and do what you love. It’s also being able to provide a social impact with music and that’s so incredibly gratifying.”

ON “SAME LOVE” WITH MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS:

“Hollis who sings ‘White Walls’ [with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis] actually, she and I were friends and she had sort of kept pushing me to the guys and they were finally like okay what do we have to lose? They sent me the track ahead about 2 or 3 hours with it and then went into the studio to meet them for the first time and I sang it for them and I think they were moved.”

ON “SHE KEEPS ME WARM”:

“I wrote the chorus specifically for ‘Same Love’. I came up with four different choruses because I was scared. I really wanted to do this song. They were all used in the song! ‘Love is patient, love is kind’ and ‘Not crying on Sundays’, they were all different ideas I had for choruses. So that was genius of Ryan to sort of put them in the positions he did.”

ON HER PERFORMANCES AFTER “SAME LOVE” SUCCESS:

“I was still doing my solo shows, you know I had a bigger audience then. A whole 50 people, I was so excited! I was getting requests to do ‘Same Love’ because that’s why they had you know, come in the first place and known about me. But I felt really uncomfortable singing to a track and I’m not a great rapper, yet – still working on my mix tape!”

ON BEING EMOTIONAL AT THE GRAMMYS:

“The whole day before for about 10 hours straight I cried and I’m not exaggerating! There was like a wad of tissues following me and everybody was kind of making fun of me. I’m just known for being a crier anyway, I cry when I’m really happy and I cry when any overwhelming emotion… It was as soon as the chorus started singing I was like, they’re singing this melody that I wrote a year and a half ago in a vocal booth on a whim and then here’s Madonna. ‘Hi Madonna! Sure you can sing my lyrics!’ Okay, what life is this?”

ON THE REHEARSALS FOR GRAMMYS:

“I got really emotional because I saw the couples for the first time and there was a couple that mouthed a ‘thank you!’ to me and I was like ‘Screw you, dude! Don’t! I can’t even hold it together!’ So then I started crying. Then Madonna looks over at me and she literally wiped my tears off of my face and then I was like, ‘What world am I in right now?’ This is such a crazy life!”
