MICHAEL SHVO IN ART & AUCTIONS POWER LIST

Michael Shvo

Art collector and luxury real estate developer Michael Shvo, president and CEO of SHVO, was named in Art + Auction’s eleventh annual 2013 Power 100 List. Shvo joins a prominent group of power players who wield significant influence in the art world, from auction houses, galleries, artists, collectors, patrons, museums, fairs, and more. Bernard Arnault, Jeff Koons, Jay Jopling, Eyal Ofer, Charles S. Moffett, Leon Black, Larry Gagosian, Eli Broad, Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Oprah Winfrey and the Acquavella Family, are just a few from this year’s list.

Benjamin Genocchio, a vice president at Louise Blouin Media and editor in chief of Art + Auction stated, “Michael has devoted himself to art with great passion and intelligence as a collector and an impresario in the New York art world and to acknowledge his expanding influence and stature, we included him on the list.”

This honor celebrates Shvo’s contributions to the art world over the past few years. He has collaborated and conceived several highly respected art exhibitions, including:

· In 2010, “Documents of Desire & Disaster,” a retrospective of contemporary photographer David LaChapelle in Istanbul. The exhibition drew more than 75,000 people and was Istanbul’s most viewed art exhibition.

· This year’s “Getty Station,” a public art program in the heart of West Chelsea’s High Line neighborhood. For the first exhibition entitled The Sheep Station, Shvo partnered with the Paul Kasmin Gallery and transformed the station into a surrealist sheep’s meadow replete with 25 concrete sheep sculptures by François-Xavier Lalanne. The installation, hailed by ArtInfo as ‘one of the year’s viral art sensations on a par with the “Rain Room” at MoMA and Yayoi Kusama“Infinity Room” selfies,’ became a viral phenomenon throughout social media channels generating 330 million unique press impressions, 3,000 uploaded photos to #gettystation, including celebrity posts by Hugh Jackman, Bobby Flay and Alexander Wang. Due to its popularity, Shvo extended the exhibition an additional four weeks which ran through November 27, 2013.

· Most recently, Sotheby’s New York approached Michael Shvo to curate an exhibition in its S2 Gallery, called “Les Lalanne: The Poetry of Sculpture.” According to Sotheby’s, the exhibit, which closed November 24, 2013, was one of the fastest selling exhibitions on record for the S2 Gallery.

Over the past decade, Shvo has developed an extensive private collection of significant contemporary pieces by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Tom Wesselmann, Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Takashi Murakami, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and Josef Albers, among many others. However, it’s his collection of sculptures by the French artists Francois-Xavier Lalanne and Claude Lalanne which are regarded as one of the largest private Les Lalanne collections in the world. Other collectors of Les Lalanne include Peter Marino, Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent, the Fendi Family, Laurence Graff and Valentino. Pieces from the Shvo collection have been displayed in the Musée du Louvre, Guggenheim Museum and Musée d’Orsay.
