DAYME

DAYME --- A few columns back we told you about the song and video of Dayme’s “Rock The Hoodie.” As of this weekend, it’s received over 1.2 million hits. Says Dayme, “I was working on my next song when the whole Trayvon-incident came up and it just moved me so … it was so close to my heart. Unity is where we all need to be; the case was more about the injustice of the Law … the Law failed him more so than the jury. It was a great injustice to all.”

The song has attracted so much interest within the industry, Dayme is now looking at several offers from various labels for a full-length album. Stay tuned.

CBGB’s MOVIE --- Trailers for the forthcoming movie based on Hilly Krystal’s CBGB’s club was released last week and has produced some curious feedback. First me: As a somewhat-regular visitor to the Bowery-based club back in the day, I have to say that Alan Rickman’s portrayal of Krystal is seemingly right on target, although I do remember him as somewhat more frenetic than Rickman plays him. I love Rickman and will always remember him as Hans Gruber in the first Die Hard (1988) movie. That said, he is one terrific actor – I loved him in Bottle Shock (2008) about the wine industry. He does seem to deliver another memorable performance here.

Second: There is no music in the film by The Ramones – who were essentially the face and theme of the club. No “Sheena was a Punk Rocker,” no “Blitzkrieg Bop” or “I Wanna Be Sedated.” There are tracks from Blondie, Talking Heads, The Police and Television; musical mainstays of the club for sure. Turns out, that there was a major feud behind-the-scenes between Linda Ramone (Joey Ramone’s widow) and the film’s producers. Linda controls the Ramones music with Joey Ramone’s brother, Mickey Leigh.

Debbie Harry has got to be ecstatic about her portrayal by the always luscious Malin Akerman (Watchmen; Rock of Ages); and, Ashley Greene (Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn) as Lisa Kristal looked spot-on too. Also there, a big favorite of ours, Johnny Galecki. The trailer looked very strong; we've got our fingers crossed.

CBGB's was a one-of-a-kind club; always a memorable trip there.

HOMELAND RETURNS --- Last week cable-net Showtime released a preview reel for the new season for their terrific Homeland; which returns on 9/29. There’s very little dialogue, just a series of scenes: including Damien Lewis, hurt and bald (!!??) and Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin before a series of congressional hearings. Looks great and suspenseful. Everyone seems to be hurting in this clip.

When the last season ended; Brody (Lewis) was on the run from … almost everyone and presumed dead; and, Carrie, was left forlorn, but, with a lot to explain. Truth be told; the emotion generated from this clip was sort of what I wanted from The Monuments Men and didn't get. Stay tuned!

THE IMPOSSIBLE --- I watched over the weekend a DVD of 2012’s The Impossible; The story of a tourist family in Thailand caught in the destruction and chaotic aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. True story and just a brilliant, brilliant movie. I remember well when the trailers first came out back then and I thought it looked too formulaic. But, I was wrong.

With Noami Watts and Ewan McGregor; it is positively stirring and the acting is off the charts. Young Tom Holland, who plays one of the three sons, Lucas, is astonishingly good. The direction by J. A. Bayona is excellent as well. If you haven't seen this yet; it’s well worth your time.

QUEEN COMING --- We Will Rock You, the musical based on the songs of Queen, has been playing at London's Dominion Theatre for over eleven years and has spawned a number of touring companies around the world, but only Las Vegas has played a version of the show in the U.S. The official North American Touring Company will begin a year-long tour beginning October 15 in Baltimore, MD and running through August of 2014. Written by Ben Elton, the show tells the story of a group of Bohemians in a world where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same and all musical instruments and composing music are forbidden.

Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor have been actively involved in every production of the show around the world, including acting as music supervisors who select the casts and the bands for each production.

Songs in the show include Radio Ga-Ga, I Want to Break Free, Somebody to Love, Killer Queen, Under Pressure, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Seven Seas of Rhye, Don't Stop Me Now, Another One Bites the Dust, and Bohemian Rhapsody.

JP’s FOREVER --- Last week in our obit on Nat Weiss; we referred to the late-great Jimmy Pulis’ club on First Avenue as Trax. That club was at the intersection of 72nd and Columbus; JP’s was on First Avenue. We regret the error.
