Hampton Hills Country Club

After witnessing Phil Mickelson narrowly lose his lead to 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose at Pennsylvania’s Merion Golf Club, it is time to test your mettle on your own private world class golf course. The US Open has ended, but Hampton Hills Country Club, with its rich history, inviting clubhouse, and impeccable golf course, is now accepting new members for its summer season.

Just ninety minutes outside of New York City, Hampton Hills Country Club is one of New York’s best kept secrets—and members like it that way.

Bookended by the 2009 US Open host Bethpage State Park Black Course and the 2004 US Open host Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Hampton Hills is located in the middle of a 2,000 acre pine and oak tree preserve in Westhampton Beach. The wooded setting allows members to escape the rush of the city in favor of peaceful competition against a challenging golf course.

Built in 1965 by Francis J. Duane, the course at Hampton Hills Country Club is said by members to never play the same way twice. Duane, a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, frequently collaborated with famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and designed over a dozen courses with Arnold Palmer including the iconic Sea Pines Country Club course in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Complementing a full service pro shop on the premises are the teaching professionals at Hampton Hills, both of whom bring PGA and LPGA experience to deliver an exemplary sporting experience.

Jack McGown has been the director of golf for the past twenty-eight seasons. A New York native, McGown has been giving lessons for over thirty-five years. His knowledge of golf and understanding of the terrain is reflected in his dominance of the course: Jack holds numerous course records including two tournament wins on the same day.

Hampton Hills’ teaching professional Patricia Baxter-Johnson has held that position for the past four years. A Dr. Rick Jensen Certified Golf Coach and Titleist Performance Institute Certified Golf Fitness Instructor, Patricia has had the honor of working with some of the game’s greatest instructors, including Chuck Cook and Todd Anderson.

Not just a club pro, Patricia has played in many LPGA Major Championships including several U.S. Women’s Opens, the Women’s British Open and the LPGA Championship competing against the likes of Annika Sorrenstam, Lorena Ochoa, and Michele Wie.

Celebrity golfers who have been known to play the Hampton Hills course include Tommy Hilfiger, Russell Simmons, Rudy Giuliani, Kelsey Grammer, Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, and John Starks. Former New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree turned to Hampton Hills to relax shortly after making his legendary Super Bowl XLII helmet catch.

In the summer months, members can head for a round of cocktails on the clubhouse’s patio or dine inside overlooking the breathtaking 18th green. Breakfast, lunch, and a simple bar menu dinner are served daily. In between games the full bar, snack bar, and restaurant encourage a relaxing break from friendly competition at Hampton Hills Country Club.
