THE HAMPTON'S HEATS UP FOR SUMMER TIME
Do not miss gravel voiced comedian Colin Quinn now appearing in “Long Story Short” at Guild Hall in East Hampton. The show, which just concluded a successful run on Broadway at the Helen Hayes Theatre in Manhattan, is produced and directed by local guy Jerry Seinfeld. “Long Story Short” described as a “hilarious blend of incisive observation, sharp commentary and Colin’s channeling of personalities of the past”—from Socrates to Snooki—has been informally subtitled “The History of the World in 75 Minutes.” He’ll be there through June 26.

For years my kitchen drawers in Southampton and New York have been stuffed with yellowing, dog-eared newspaper clips of recipes from Silvia Lehrer, Dan’s Papers food columnist for many years. Now Silvia the Queen of Hamptons cookery has released a marvelous compendium of her favorite recipes using the best of the best of locally sourced products form land and sea. SAVORING THE HAMPTONS: Discovering the Food and Wine of Long Island’s East End (Running Press; May 2011, Hardcover; $30.00) a culinary celebration of this unique region.
While the Hamptons have long been known as a luxurious summer vacation spot, Lehrer, a Hamptonite for two decades, shows us the deliciousness in every season. In SAVORING THE HAMPTONS, Lehrer chronicles the seasons, from the opening of farm stands in the spring, bearing asparagus and eggplants, to the bustling summer months of tomatoes and berries, the apple picking in autumn, and finally, the hearty winter potlucks.
Featuring over 200 recipes, from Scallops in Sorrel Sauce and Fettuccine with Wild Mushrooms in the spring, Stuffed Zucchini Blossoms and Marinated Swordfish and Shrimp Brochette in the summer, to Harvest Grape Tart and Brined Roasted Turkey with Lemon and Herbs in the autumn and Fisherman’s Seafood Chowder and Butternut Squash Risotto in the winter months, the book highlights the season’s finest ingredients from the island’s rich resources.
The book also features a delightful foreword by longtime friend and neighbor Alan Alda as well as fascinating interviews with famed chefs, farmers, vintners and just plain folks who appreciate the bounty of the East End. This is indeed Silvia’s love letter to the Hamptons and deserves a place of pride on your bookshelf!
