The Greenhouse Project at Manhattan School for Children—PS 333 is a pilot program to construct environmental laboratories on the rooftops of New York City public schools. The idea was conceived by a group of NYC parents and educators, who discovered that environmental science education is lacking within the public school system, and that many schools have vacant roof-tops which could serve as ideal spaces for hands-on learning facilities. The laboratory, which will be constructed on the PS 333 rooftop, will resemble that of a traditional greenhouse in which elementary school children will be able to grow food and learn the importance of water resource management, conservation, waste management and climate change.Designer Donna Karan, Actress Lauren Bacall and renowned Author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants book series, Ann Brashares, recently joined forces to host a benefit supporting the efforts and development of The Greenhouse Project and Wellness in the Schools’ (WITS) health and wellness programs. The event, sponsored by SAVEUR Magazine, took place at Urban Zen at The Stephen Weiss Studio where over 430 guests gathered for the environmental cause and participated in a live-auction, helping to raise over $100,000. Donna Karan kicked off the start of the auction donating a generous $5,000, while Bill Telepan, Owner and Chef of famed restaurant Telepan, auctioned off two dinners for 16 guests for $11,000 each. $80,000 of the profits raised came from the exciting live-auction; all proceeds from the evening benefited The Greenhouse Project and WITS. Other guests at the benefit included Danny Clark of the New York Giants, Actress Jill Hennessy (who performed songs from her new album Ghost In My Head), co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America Chris Cuomo, as well as his wife, Gotham Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Cristina Cuomo.
