ONE OF THE LAST ISAAC HAYES INTERVIEWS
In this weeks Steppin' Out magazine, the late/great Isaac Hayes sits down with Chaunce Hayden and shares what he wishes he could still conquer and how he wants to be remembered when he dies....
Chaunce Hayden: You've conquered film, music, radio and TV. Is there anything else left for you to conquer?
Isaac Hayes: I just like to spread myself all over and hope that something catches on. Although I haven't done Broadway yet. I turned down an offer to do “Ragtime” years ago because it wasn't enough money. Also, to me Broadway seems kind of confining, to do the same show over and over. I think I would get bored after a short time. I once performed in Vegas for 16 straight nights and I hated it. [Laughs] There was no time to find any girls!
Chaunce Hayden: Finally, how would you like to be remembered after you're gone?
Isaac Hayes: [Long pause] As someone who used his talent for the benefit of mankind. And as someone who made this world a more pleasant place to live. I'm a civil rights fighter and an advocate of literacy and I'm very generous with my time. I care about people. I watch TV and I see kids without parents and I cry. It touches me. I've been through the whole gambit of survival. My mother died when I was a baby and I've seen all kinds of stuff. So I have a sensitivity toward children. So wherever I can do something to make it a better situation, I pursue that. I know that one man can't save the world, but I'll do whatever I can. Scientology has been very good for me in that area, because the aim of Scientology is to bring more sanity into this world. Because if we don't then we're in trouble because we're heading for a collision course. It might not seem like it but we are. Think about it, years ago we laughed at scientists when they tried to tell us about the ozone layer and now it's a problem. People think that people who practice Scientology are just a bunch of quacks. But Scientology is very sane. It's changed my life. I've been involved in it for six years now and it's given me the tools to do things I have to do as far as helping mankind is concerned.
