Sophia Ruan Gushee

Author Sophia Ruan Gushée celebrated the launch of her book, A to Z of D-Toxing: The Ultimate Guide to Reducing Our Toxic Exposures, on the roof of the Nomad Hotel in Manhattan recently.

Sophia was joined at the celebration by her family, husband Gregory Gushée and her three adorable daughters. Following speeches by her husband and eight-year-old daughter, Sophia took the stage to thank her family, the guests, and those who helped her complete the book, a culmination of five years of research.

In her speech, Sophia told the heartfelt story of how she began her research on the toxic chemicals that pervade our environment; after the birth of her first child, she found herself up late one night reading a book on how best to care for her infant, and was shocked to discover that carcinogens can be found in some baby bottle nipples, and hormone disruptor's have been found in some baby bottles as well. Shocked, she began to research practical alternatives to these potentially dangerous products, and continued to look for safer replacements for the common products in our lives that expose us to countless toxins: pesticides, household cleaners, chemical flame retardants, and even furniture, to name a few.

Guests such as Charlotte Matthews, Gina Marinelli, and Jacqui Kennedy enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres on the roof of the Nomad and browsed through copies of the newly-published book, called a “veritable encyclopedia” by Elena Brower and a “comprehensive…helpful [and] easy-to-read manual” by Dr. Frank Lipman.

A to Z of D-Toxing: The Ultimate Guide to Reducing Our Toxic Exposures is now available for sale on Amazon.
