VANILLA FUDGE TO PERFORM AT BERGEN PAC

Vanilla Fudge

Vanilla Fudge is bringing its brand of “psychedelic symphonic rock” to bergenPAC on Thursday, June 6th 2013 at 8pm.

Emerging from the Long Island music scene of the mid-to-late 1960s, Vanilla Fudge is probably best known for its slowed-down cover of the Supremes’ recording of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” While the track on the group’s self-titled debut album clocked in at nearly seven minutes in length, a shorter single version made its way to the upper reaches of the Billboard pop charts in 1968.

Stein and Bogert played in a local band called Rick Martin & The Showmen. The pair were so impressed by the swinging sound and floods of organ of The Rascals they decided to form their own band with Martell and Rick Martin's drummer, Joey Brennan. Originally calling themselves The Pigeons, they changed the name to Vanilla Fudge in 1966, after the replacement of Brennan by Appice. The group was then "discovered" and managed by reputed Lucchese crime family member Phillip Basile, who operated several popular clubs in New York. Led Zeppelin, then an emerging band, was the opening act on their American tour.

The band's original lineup—vocalist/organist Mark Stein, bassist/vocalist Tim Bogert, lead guitarist/vocalist Vince Martell, and drummer/vocalist Carmine Appice—recorded five albums during the years 1966–69, before disbanding in 1970. The band has reunited in various configurations over the years, and most of the original lineup has been on the road for the past year or so, with Carmine Appice on drums, lead guitarist Vince Martell and Mark Stein on keyboards. The current bass guitarist is Pete Bremy, filling in for Tim Bogert, who retired from touring because of injuries from a motorcycle accident a number of years ago.
