Joe Lovano

The world-class Westchester Jazz Orchestra will begin their 2011-12 season on September 24 welcoming special guest Joe Lovano, the Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer. A jazz superstar, Mr. Lovano boasts an illustrious career as a leader, elite guest performer and wide-ranging collaborator.

The concert will take place at 8 PM on Sat., Sept. 24 at the Irvington Town Hall Theater, 85 Main Street, Irvington, NY. “Open Mike,” an interactive chat with Joe Lovano hosted by Artistic Director Mike Holober, will begin at 7:15 and is free for ticket holders. Gary Walker, Music Director and Morning Show Host at WBGO-FM, is set to MC.

With a roster of internationally renowned musicians, WJO “has built a reputation for … strikingly executed performances” (The New York Times). This status was further enhanced by WJO’s March 2011 selection as a STAR Initiative participant by WNYC, New York’s flagship public radio station.

During his celebrated career, Mr. Lovano has won one Grammy award, been nominated for eight more, and has been honored as DownBeat magazine’s Jazz Artist/Musician of the Year, Tenor Saxophonist of the Year and Album of the Year. A leader of many superlative and diverse groups, he has also been a member of premiere big bands, most notably the Mel Lewis Orchestra (now Vanguard Jazz Orchestra), with which he played for 12 years. His brilliant collaborations include work with the esteemed artists Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, John Scofield, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Bobby Hutcherson, Michel Petrucciani, McCoy Tyner, Ornette Coleman and numerous others.

Mike Holober succinctly summed up Mr. Lovano’s career: “Joe is arguably the greatest tenor saxophonist of this era and one of the most important voices in jazz, period.”

In August, WJO released their second CD, Maiden Voyage Suite, a powerful re-imagining of Herbie Hancock’s classic 1965 album. This release follows the group’s acclaimed debut, All In, which peaked at #4 on the national jazz radio chart, and which the Toronto Star called “an expertly woven and thrilling collection.”

WBGO 88.3FM, the major jazz radio station for the NY metropolitan area, has already honored WJO’s new effort by selecting it for the station’s CD of the Month Club for October 2011. Early reviews laud the CD.

The September 24 concert will feature newly-commissioned arrangements of Mr. Lovano’s songs by Mr. Holober as well as by band members Tony Kadleck and Jason Rigby. WJO will also perform selections from Maiden Voyage Suite.

WJO’s 2011-12 season continues with Master Keys: Music of Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal and Herbie Hancock on December 3; Bossa! Tango! Flamenco! on January 28; and Music of Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles on April 14. WJO’s concerts are partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, Arts Westchester and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
