One of the most prestigious lecture series of its kind, started in 1970 involving past speakers including noted historians, academics and politicians, the 41st Annual Herbert H. Lehman Memorial Lecture will take place on March 25th, 2010. Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr. has been invited to present the Herbert H. Lehman Memorial Lecture, marking the first time a descendant of the Lehman family will address the event. Ambassador Loeb represented the United States in Denmark from 1981-1983. As the founder of the George Washington Institute for Religious Freedom, he will be addressing the memorial event on the subject of tolerance. For former US Ambassador to Denmark, John L. Loeb Jr. the opportunity to speak on a subject of deep personal passion, “Beyond Tolerance” is not only a privilege but also a deeply satisfying personal event for he shares his ancestor’s passion for speaking out on the issues of religious freedom. Ambassador Loeb has recently produced a book about the contribution of early Jewish families to the United States and is championing educational projects regarding George Washington’s early efforts to establish religious freedom in this country. ABOUT HERBERT H. LEHMAN:


Herbert H. Lehman, for whom the Memorial Lecture is named, was the son of one of three original founders of thel investment bank, Lehman Brothers, where he worked for 30 years. He later served both as governor of New York State and as a U.S. senator, having a clear passion for business, politics, and philanthropy. Additionally, he was the first director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), the forerunner organization to the United Nations (UN), created by President Franklin Roosevelt, which provided wartime humanitarian aid to the population of the Allied nations.



ABOUT JOHN L. LOEB JR.


Following graduation from Harvard in 1952, Harvard Business School in 1954, and service in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, John Loeb pursued a financial career with his family’s Wall Street firm, Loeb, Rhoades, as a senior partner. From 1981 to 1983 he served the United States as ambassador to Denmark under the Reagan administration. Much of the ambassador’s life has been focused on public service and philanthropy. Most recently he has created the George Washington Institute for Religious Freedom (GWIRF), a foundation dedicated to fostering public awareness of the history of religious liberty in America and its increasingly urgent relevance.
