Come next month MMG Publishing here in New York will release a new magazine that will have tongues-a-waggin' indeed - MUTTS: THE DOGS THAT AMERICA LOVES. Did you know that about half of the nation's estimated 74 million dogs are Mutts ... and, half purebreds. At one time it was a badge of honor to have a purebred ... but, today that badge of honor has changed. The reality is that many mutts are rescued from somewhere, and people like that idea. According the MMG's TONY DESTEFANO, "This magazine is for the everyday dogs ... that most people have. Most dogs are pavement specials - streets dogs, and we want to celebrate that fact."Purebred dogs are a product of human intervention, while mutts are a product of evolution and a higher power. "The very first dogs were mutts," says Raymond Coppinger, an animal behaviorist and author. "At one time, mutts were considered inferior. The truth is that most dogs the world over are street dogs." Joe Camp, the writer and director of the Benji movies, never considered anything but a mutt to play the scruffy pooch because of his fondness for Disney's Lady and the Tramp ... the Tramp was a street dog too. The most recent Benji movie was discovered at the Humane Society of South Mississippi in Gulfport. "One day here's this unkempt, shaggy street dog .. and, the next day he's about to star in a major movie." Other celebrity mutts range from the dog (named Scraps) in the 1918 Charlie Chaplin film A Dog's Life and, Murray on the '90s sitcom Mad About You.While the brilliant BEST IN SHOW showed firsthand purebreds and designer dogs, MUTTS will showcase the everyday dog. Among the articles in the premiere issue which will hit newsstands in late-July, are: "Busted: Life In A Dog Shelter"; "Broadway Barks: The Stars Come Out For Strays"; and "Pup Psychology; Dogs Heal Troubled Teens." DeStefano adds that in subsequent issues, they'll be a monthly column entitled 'Celebrity Mutts', wherein a famous face will pen the article and shown with their dog. Also, they'll be major media event in July as well and the magazine will announce a celebrity-spokesperson.
