If a producer walked into a major label these days and pitched releasing a compilation of three female singers, doing all original songs, and production, chances are that the producer would be laughed out the door. Regrettably, those days are long gone. Artist development, long a bandied about term in the music biz, is gone. Nowadays, it's usually a case of sampling this, downloading that, and, you have a record that cost almost nothing to make. You throw it out in the marketplace, and very quickly, if it's good, it will recoup its investment. SONIC UNDERGROUND, the little label that could ... has just released LUCKY 13 (on the eve of their 13th anniversary) which is a compilation of all original songs with terrific production, by CATHY KREGER; SUSAN DeVITA (left); and, MARCI GELLER, who runs the label with GIAN DiMAURO. The songs at once reference the terrific work done by such artists as CAROLE KING; LAURA NYRO; JANIS JOPLIN; BONNIE RAITT; MARIA MULDAUR; and, THE BAND. Yes, all classic artists, but great artists nonetheless. The label has enjoyed much indie-success with releases by Not A Pretty Picture by The Gearhead Freaks; Must Be The Moon; Here On The Edge; and, Geller's own solo CD Box Of Truth.Says DiMauro, "In the tradition of when albums were complete works, not just a collection of songs, we fashioned LUCKY 13 to take the listener on a musical journey from start to finish."Sonic Underground's marketing plan is to introduce the CD first to people who will really be able to appreciate it. PR-maven DAVID SALIDOR (the Pasha!) says he's already had a terrific reception. "I think that music this credible, original and exciting, has been sorely missing from the current music scene. Music consumption has never been higher, but, that quality, that was once fairly predominant, is no longer there. This is a compilation wherein each of the 13 tracks are wonderful. There's no question that the real music lovers, will love this."Cathy Kreger has worked with the likes of Raitt, David Bromberg, The Band, and, Taj Mahal, while DeVita worked with the legendary Arif Mardin and was signed to RCA by Paul Atkinson; one of the original Zombies. Geller sang with Ritchie Blackmore's group Blackmore's Night and her music has been heard on numerous TV shows. Independent Songwriter Magazine named her one of the 'Top 10 Best Singers/Songwriters.' LUCKY 13 is formally introduced at Steve Walter's Cutting Room on Monday, July 21.
