  Lesley Stahl   Sabastian Niles Literacy Partners hosted its 2026 Evening of Readings & Gala Dinner at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers, bringing together New York’s literary, philanthropic, civic and business leaders for a festive black-tie evening celebrating the power of literacy to change lives, which also marked the 40th anniversary of the gala, first held in 1986, by its founder, Liz Smith. The annual gala hosted by award-winning journalist Lesley Stahl, supports Literacy Partners’ mission to advance literacy two generations at a time, helping adults, parents and caregivers build the skills and confidence they need to create stronger futures for themselves and the children in their care. Ethan Hawke and Mayor Michael Bloomberg were on the scene. Proceeds from the event benefit the New York City Family Justice Center Initiative, a unique public/private program administered by the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence. This year, the event also benefitted the New York City Housing Authority’s Early Childhood programs, which provide children in NYCHA public housing communities with high-quality early care and learning opportunities for overall child development, and school and lifelong success. Fete de Swifty’s combination of street fair and cocktail party has been a unique event in New York City since 2004. LIZ SMITH LEAVES NEW YORK POST TOMORROW

Liz Smith Another New York icon is leaving the scene. The New York Post has canned Liz Smith's column this week to save money, leaving the famous gossip columnist without a newspaper in the Big Apple for the first time in 33 years. "I'm very sorry that that has come to an end, and that I wasn't valuable enough for them to keep me on," the 86-year-old Smith said Tuesday to media outlets. Smith said the daily newspaper declined to renew her $125,000 annual contract in a letter that said, "due to economic circumstances, they were the bearer of bad news and so forth." Col Allan, the paper's editor-in-chief, said: "The Post is grateful to have been able to publish Liz Smith's legendary column for so many years. We wish her the very best for the future."
