PHARRELL WILLIAMS @ ELVIS DURAN MORNING SHOW

Pharrell Williams

Pharrell Williams stopped by the Elvis Duran and The Z100 Morning Show to talk about his recent massive success with hit song “Happy,” working with Miley Cyrus and the media’s skewed image of her, and his support of women’s rights. The producer turned solo artist was excited to be at Z100 Studios for the first time promoting his own music. Describing his visit as being a moment for him, he felt it was “a little awkward, a little weird, and a little new” to be interviewed as a solo artist. When talking about the message behind his album ‘GIRL, the music phenomenon said, “At the end of the day, I hope women hear this album and what is at the bottom of the pot is you understand my intention. I’m just saying thank you, you’ve been so good to me.” Pharrell’s album and new single “Come Get It Bae ft. Miley Cyrus” are available for download on iTunes.

ON VISITING Z100 AND ELVIS DURAN AND THE MORNING SHOW:

“New York is still the heart of America, in terms of the electricity, you know the energy, the coolest of the cool. It is what it is, and that’s why it’s a pleasure to be here. It’s one of the biggest, THE station in this country. As a producer, I know that because you guys lead the charge. People look to see what you guys are doing to see what to follow. As a producer, I’ve always been thankful to have my record played on this station but to be here as an artist, is a little awkward, a little weird, a little new. So, this is a moment for me.”

ON GETTING A HIT AS A SOLO ARTIST:

“You guys make my songs hit. I’ll tell you what comes first, the song. That’s like a really small part of it, but after the song, then there are the tastemakers, the connectors, and that’s you guys. The rest of picture, are the people who will download a song, or purchase a song, or share it or talk about it. These are all necessary variables for success that are not promised to you, so when they happen you should just appreciate it. I know that as a producer, because I’ve seen that a million times, so for me to experience it I never expected to feel this.”

FLEET WEEK @ ELVIS DURAN AND THE MORNING SHOW

****
SAILING THE SEAS WITH Z100
****

Fleet Week With Elvis Duran

Elvis Duran and The Morning Show proudly welcomed the men and women of USMC/USN to New York City this morning, as we officially kick off Fleet Week. Elvis shared with his listeners, “This week is so important, and Memorial Day is so much more than just a three day weekend and the white sale at Macy’s. This is an opportunity for us to see our men and women who serve this country on the street, and thank them for all they do and sacrifice for each one of us.”

Elvis invited a group of men and women from the Navy on-air to express how excited our city is to host them this week. During the interview they told Elvis that in addition to visiting Manhattan, they are also on duty 24/7. Many will be working with Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and volunteering at various soup kitchens around the city. All three of the military ships that are docked will also be hosting tours and educating visitors about what exactly they do.

The Morning Show’s own Greg T was flown in on helicopter yesterday, and he spent the night aboard the USS Oak Hill. Greg T broadcasted from the ship, and also interviewed some members from the Navy live during the show. Greg T told Elvis, “This is the most amazing, beautiful experience I’ve ever had, everyone on this ship makes me truly proud to be an American." Tomorrow the show will fully recap Greg T’s adventures on the USS Oak Hill. Tune in tomorrow!

MARY LAMBERT PERFORMS ON Z100'S ELVIS DURAN

Mary Lambert On Elvis Duran

Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Mary Lambert performed her single “She Keeps Me Warm” on Elvis Duran and the Z100 Morning Show earlier yesterday. Off her recently released EP Welcome To The Age of My Body, the song was made famous as the hook in Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ hit “Same Love”. The 24-year-old stopped by to talk to Elvis about her recent success, her past struggles, and her historic performance at the 56th Grammys with Madonna, Queen Latifah, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. When asked about what life’s been like recently, the singer said she’s been able to “provide a social impact with music and that’s so incredibly gratifying.” Mary and Elvis were also interviewed for Good Day NY and her performance was featured on the show’s morning broadcast. For more information on Mary Lambert, please visit her website MaryLambertSings.com.

ON HER CAREER RIGHT NOW:

“I don’t know what I did in my life to be in this position, and have all the incredible things, all of the opportunities and to be on this platform. I get paid to do something that I love so, so deeply and it’s not just like making pop music or even just being on a platform to sing and do what you love. It’s also being able to provide a social impact with music and that’s so incredibly gratifying.”

ON “SAME LOVE” WITH MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS:

“Hollis who sings ‘White Walls’ [with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis] actually, she and I were friends and she had sort of kept pushing me to the guys and they were finally like okay what do we have to lose? They sent me the track ahead about 2 or 3 hours with it and then went into the studio to meet them for the first time and I sang it for them and I think they were moved.”

ON “SHE KEEPS ME WARM”:

“I wrote the chorus specifically for ‘Same Love’. I came up with four different choruses because I was scared. I really wanted to do this song. They were all used in the song! ‘Love is patient, love is kind’ and ‘Not crying on Sundays’, they were all different ideas I had for choruses. So that was genius of Ryan to sort of put them in the positions he did.”

ON HER PERFORMANCES AFTER “SAME LOVE” SUCCESS:

“I was still doing my solo shows, you know I had a bigger audience then. A whole 50 people, I was so excited! I was getting requests to do ‘Same Love’ because that’s why they had you know, come in the first place and known about me. But I felt really uncomfortable singing to a track and I’m not a great rapper, yet – still working on my mix tape!”

ON BEING EMOTIONAL AT THE GRAMMYS:

“The whole day before for about 10 hours straight I cried and I’m not exaggerating! There was like a wad of tissues following me and everybody was kind of making fun of me. I’m just known for being a crier anyway, I cry when I’m really happy and I cry when any overwhelming emotion… It was as soon as the chorus started singing I was like, they’re singing this melody that I wrote a year and a half ago in a vocal booth on a whim and then here’s Madonna. ‘Hi Madonna! Sure you can sing my lyrics!’ Okay, what life is this?”

ON THE REHEARSALS FOR GRAMMYS:

“I got really emotional because I saw the couples for the first time and there was a couple that mouthed a ‘thank you!’ to me and I was like ‘Screw you, dude! Don’t! I can’t even hold it together!’ So then I started crying. Then Madonna looks over at me and she literally wiped my tears off of my face and then I was like, ‘What world am I in right now?’ This is such a crazy life!”

LADY GAGA TELLS ELVIS DURAN ABOUT MARIJUANA

****
THE ELVIS DURAN INTERVIEW
****

Lady Gaga On Elvis Duran

Lady Gaga sat down with Elvis Duran and The Z100 Morning Show to talk about the release of her new album ARTPOP(out today), being the first performer to sing in space, and her emotional struggles with drugs and depression in the past. Elvis was able to dig into "Gaga's basement," during his 45 minute exclusive with the POP SuperStar. Elvis, as usual, created a comfortable atmosphere in which Gaga felt safe enough to discuss these difficult topics.

ON BEING ADDICTED TO MARIJUANA

“I just want young kids to know that you actually can become addicted to it [marijuana]… I have been addicted to it and its ultimately related to anxiety coping and it’s a form of self medication and I was smoking up to 15-20 marijuana cigarettes a day with no tobacco. I was living on a totally other psychedelic plain, numbing myself completely and looking back I do see now that some of it had to do with my hip pain. I didn’t know where the pain was coming from so I was just in a lot of pain and really depressed all the time and not really sure why.”

“It’s a battle, every day. I don’t want to lie about it because there is no reason to lie. But, the truth is that it is very hard to be famous. It’s wonderful to be famous because I have amazing fans. But it is very, very hard to go out into the world when you are not feeling happy and act like you are because I am a human being too and I break and I think there is an assumption, not just by the corporate world, or by humanity that I cannot break because I am alien woman and I am unstoppable. The truth is that I can break, and I did. I was not very good at breaking. I lost everything that I love. I was in a wheelchair for six months. I did a lot of drugs and took a lot of pills. I let it all kind of go because I didn’t know if I was going to live for the next year or two. When your schedule gets that out of control and you’re not able to feel the ground anymore you lose a sense of your own soul.”

“I had to stop. I was addicted to it [marijuana]... I’ve been addicted to various things since I was young. Most heavily over the past seven years. A friend gave me this term I lily pad from substance to substance because I get to a point where I can’t go any further with one substance so I move to another.”

ON OVERCOMING HER ADDICTION AND HER MESSAGE TO HER FANS

“You can fight. I do put that pressure on myself; I have to be high to be creative. I need that, that’s an error in my life that happened for over 10 years. Can I be brilliant without it? I know that I can be and I have to be because I want to live, and I want my fans to want to live. I don’t want them to torture themselves in the way I have. I want to show people that I will last past 27 and I will last longer, and so will you. I want to change this code in the atmosphere that in order to be remembered I must die young. In order to be remembered as a legend I must be dead first. This is unhealthy. The way that we [celebrities] are treated by the media, this is unhealthy. Not just me, I am just one of many people that are treated poorly by the media.”

ON HER ACHILLES HEEL IN THE BUSINESS AND HOW SHE OVERCAME IT

“Look I think my Achilles heel in this business has always been from the beginning, like, oh is she a rich girl from New York? Did she go to a private school? But actually I did go to a privileged school, I did go to a private school, I did have a great education. My parents were not rich, they sent me to a great school with all the money that they had…I am smart. I will no longer allow this thing that was my Achilles heel to remain there.”

ON THE PRESSURES OF BEING A FEMALE ARTIST

“There’s this incredible pressure on female artists that we have to reinvent ourselves between each record. Michael Jackson didn’t reinvent himself with each album, or Elton John or Whitney Houston. These are some of my favorite artists in history. What I was thinking about was I don’t want to throw my wigs away, I don’t want to throw my outfits away, I want to celebrate them because these are the inventions that got me to where I am. I want my fans to know that you really just need one good idea. I feel like this pressure that the public puts on you to have several good ideas over and over again until you die; this is actually not reality.”

ON GETTING OUT OF THE CORPORATE MOLD

“ARTPOP is definitely a time that we are really excited to be putting art into the front and that corporations will no longer drive me or my work and that the House of Gaga- this is our foray into the art and technology world. The artRave was the beginning of that.”

ON THE CHANGES SHE MADE FOR ARTPOP AND WHY SHE IS DIFFERENT

“I’m usually already on to the next album when the album comes out. I’m really very fascinated with this transformation inside of me that I am feeling very happy and confident in the work that I have created. I really love this album. I mostly love this album because it helped me lose 30 pounds in the gym!”

ON WHAT ARTPOP IS ALL ABOUT

"This album is about joy, coming into my own, and also really deciding for myself as an artist that I don’t need to change my image with every single album. This was something I was really fascinated with iconography and how we see the artist.”

“This is why ARTPOP is so important to me. I want the world to know that the real intelligence is in the heart and the mind of the artist and not the corporation.”

ON NOT BEING A FORMULA AND BUILDING THE HOUSE OF GAGA USING HER GREATEST TALENT

“When you have road bumps in your career everybody starts to shake and everybody starts to get nervous… The reality is that there was never any formula and I am not a marketing plan and I never have been. ARTPOP has no marketing plan… This was something that was generated by this young collective group called the House of Gaga, which has been our debut on Sunday at the artRave… What I’m trying to say I guess is that I may be talented at music, but my greatest talent is seeing potential in others.”

ON DIGGING DEEPER AND ABOUT WHO LADY GAGA IS AS AN ARTIST

“I think the truth is that since the beginning of my career, although I am a pop star now, I was not generated by a factory, I was not generated by a corporation, and there was no team other than the team that I put together that helped me make my artistic dreams come true.”

ON THE MIND OF AN ARTIST AND WHAT ARTPOP SHOULD MEAN TO HER FANS

“If our minds go, there is nothing else. Somebody gives me a canvas at the beginning of every album cycle and its blank. I am left with a paintbrush and I sit by myself. That is the thing I want people to know and recognize not just about me, but about themselves… There is a canvas, a paintbrush, and an artist and then the ideas start to come. That is what ARTPOP is. What I want my fans to know is that you will not be defined by the people that hire you. You will not be defined by the corporate world around you. You will be defined the ideas that are in your own heart and in your own mind. It is just you, and that brush, and that canvas. You will work hard enough that one day you will sign only your name at the bottom of that blank page.

ON HER SPACE PERFORMANCE IN 2015

“It’s going to happen in 2015… This event where I didn’t have to pay for my seat, and it was offered to me by Zero G Colony and Virgin Galactic to be the first to technically to sing from space. Who knows if someone will build a rocket before then, I don’t know! It was more important to me that I am the first to sing from a Virgin Galactic space craft.”

ON WHAT IT TAKES TO PERFORM IN SPACE

“I’ll explain this to you - it’s not so easy to sing from space. Even if you are flying to space on one of these commercial flights this is not congruent with the actual event and what will be done. This is an entire event and festival that’s being created to take music to the beyond and have me, the artist, singing from this space craft and that will be live streamed back to earth while there is a concert going on Ground Zero.”

KATHY GRIFFIN DISHES ON ELVIS DURAN SHOW

****
ON THE RADIO WITH

ELVIS DURAN AND THE MORNING SHOW
****

Kathy Griffin Comes Clean With Elvis Duran

It's no surprise Kathy Griffin, who is in town for her comedy show this friday at Carnegie Hall, opens up to Elvis FIRST about current celebrity "happenings." Elvis, who is brilliant at creating a comfortable environment in his Tribeca Z100 studio, let Kathy voice her opinions over the air waves this morning. Elvis pointed out during the interview how Kathy, who is known for taking jabs at many of these celebrities, has been often seen hanging around them. Elvis voiced his concern about how being in these circles now, could eventually tarnish her reputation as the "peoples person." Kathy quickly set Elvis at ease, as she explained that although she may be friends with some, there is no rule/agreement made preventing her from making fun of them.

This seemed to make sense to the entire Elvis Duran Morning Crew, as they continued to laugh hearing some hysterical Kathy Griffin celebrity interpretations. Kathy Griffin stopped by "Elvis Duran and the Morning Show", before she performs at Carnegie Hall for the New York Comedy Festival, this Friday at 8 PM. Her show is titled Kathy Griffin: Bite My Big Apple. Go to NewYorkComedyFestival.com for more info. Please find some fantastic quotes below, regarding the Kardashians, Cher, Kayne West, Amanda Bynes, Miley Cyrus, Ryan Seacrest and many more!

ON TWEETING WITH CHER

“I swear I have tried to give her [Cher] a Twitter lesson, although, I am turning into my own 93 year old alcoholic mother myself. I don’t drink, but I am also not a techie.”

ON THE KARDASHIANS

“I think there might be a turn in the world of Kardashians. I think people are done with them. I think they are done with the ones they tried to introduce this year like the boring sister in law who does yoga, and Brody who was in “The Hills”, and then I think there is one called Taffy? I think once Bruce Jenner becomes a woman it’s a completely different conversation.”

ON KRIS JENNER

“Kris Jenner has repeatedly said can you please stop calling my daughters dirty whores. I said no, its important, and what I do for America."

ON THE TWO SIDES OF KANYE WEST

“There is Kanye the musician and that’s fine, and there is the Taylor Swift moment which is the greatest thing that ever happened to her. She now has a pass for life. She could actually kick kittens in the face and we would be like, ‘Aw but there was that one time Kanye tried to take your award!’”

ON MILEY CYRUS

“I’m all about Miley. I love slutty Miley. I don’t care for Hannah Montana I find her boring. I like nudity on a wrecking ball.”

ON AMANDA BYNES

“Let me say this about Amanda Bynes. She is kind of not off limits. She is actually getting real legit health care and there are so many people that have whatever she has and aren’t, that I feel like she is going to be ok. She is in a fortunate position where people care about her and looking after her and she has parents.”

ON RYAN SEACREST

“I would say Ryan Seacrest and I have a cordial relationship because he gets that its all in good fun. Demi Lovato has an army. I get more death threats from Demi Lovato fans called Lovatics and the Tea Party than really any other group. Those two describe it in graphic detail.”

ON GWYNETH PALTROW

“Gwyneth Paltrow is not having my crap. I tried to make her laugh and she wasn’t having it. I had an 8x10 photo made and I signed it, “To Gwyneth”, and I signed her name wrong because I knew it would drive her crazy.”

ON DOING STAND UP

“When you do live stand up you really live for a moment where Justin Bieber is covered in probably a dirty bed sheet leaving a brothel… allegedly. This is almost knocking the Kanye rant out of my act.”

ON JOHN MAYER AND HOW SHE APPROACHES CELEBRITIES

“Recently I saw John Mayer and he kind of did the two fingers crossed like as if he was performing an exorcism. I do get that a lot. I am all about the observation. I call it like the boom mic. I have an imaginary one. I am not into confronting celebrities I’d rather observe and then talk smack about them later behind their backs.”

SELENA GOMEZ VISITS THE ELVIS DURAN SHOW

****
ON THE RADIO
****

Selena Gomez With Elvis Duran

Selena Gomez visited Elvis and the rest of the morning show crew to talk about her new album, which will be released this summer.

“The older I’ve gotten the more I’ve wanted to have creative control” Gomez revealed when asked about the process of recording her upcoming album, “I got to write a lot, which was fun. But I ended up appreciating more of figuring out the melodies and working with producers that I admire.”

“I guess we are noticing something here…a movie that you typically would not have done before, a new look, a new feeling that you gave us at the MTV movie awards and now a new album. Is this going to be a departure from what we are used to? What is different about this album?” Elvis questioned, to which Gomez replied “Everything. Not just the lyrics, but the music of it all…this time I wouldn’t even touch a song if I didn’t like. I really wanted to be a part of it. …I just wanted to make sure that every sound you’re hearing, every track you’ll play is like ear candy. It’s just fun.”

“What’s Selena Gomez up to? What is she gonna tell us in this album.” Elvis wants to know, “I’m in my 20’s. I wanna have fun, I wanna enjoy my life and not have to worry about every little thing and each of the tracks on the album kind of have the reflection of just letting loose and just being in the moment. It’s a shift, as opposed to a more emotional stand point. There is one of those on there, but it’s still going to keep them guessing.”

ELVIS DURAN VISITS WITH GLEE'S CHRIS COLFER

****
ELVIS DURAN AND THE MORNING SHOW ON Z100
****

Chris Colfer

Elvis Duran
Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer came in to speak with “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show” about his new book “The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell” in stores now.Chris said writing the book was a process that required a lot of self-discipline. He wrote a majority of the book while he was touring worldwide with the cast of “Glee”. The largest sense of fulfillment came when he finished the book. When asked whom the first copy of the book went too, Chris said it was his Grandma. Elvis spoke to Chris about why he chose not to write an autobiography; he said that being only 22 (he was approached to write an autobiography two years ago) he lacked the life experience necessary. He felt there were not enough lessons to pass down to his fellow readers. Instead he chose to write fiction, which he said is almost his way of writing his own autobiography. The book is for ages 8-12 but he said anyone looking for a magical adventure should pick it up. Danielle Monaro was praising the book throughout the interview; Chris even noted she was a great saleswoman. Writing is a huge part of Chris’ life now in addition to Glee he is writing a screenplay, which takes a darker turn. He revealed exclusively that the screenplay he is currently writing would take place in a 1930’s asylum.

“Elvis Duran and the Morning Show” is syndicated in over 50 markets and is the number one Top 40 morning show in the country. The program airs 6-10 a.m., Monday-Friday, for more information please visit www.elvisduran.com
