The Last Defense

“DARLIE ROUTIER: The Woman” – The trial of Darlie Routier heats up. Facing one of Texas’ top defense lawyers, the prosecution argues that Darlie's actions and demeanor are not that of a grieving mother but of a person capable of murdering her own children. The defense strikes back by questioning the state’s theory of motive and the characterization of Darlie. However, when the prosecution presents a video of Darlie having a party at her children's gravesite in the now infamous “silly string video,” it seems her fate is sealed. Author Barbara Davis, who was at the original trial, gives a firsthand account on “The Last Defense,” TUESDAY, JUNE 26 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand.

“DARLIE ROUTIER: The Woman” was directed by Jeremiah Crowell.

“The Last Defense” is executive produced by Viola Davis, Julius Tennon and Andrew Wang for JuVee Productions; Christine Connor and Lee Beckett for XCON Productions; Vanessa Potkin, Aida Leisenring and Morgan Hertzan for Lincoln Square Productions. The series will air on The ABC Television Network.

“The Last Defense” is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format with 5.1- channel surround sound.

ABC will screen the first episode of documentary series “The Last Defense,” from executive producers Viola Davis and Julius Tennon, XCON Productions and Lincoln Square Productions, at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival on FRIDAY, APRIL 27. The seven-episode docu-series explores and exposes flaws in the American justice system through emotional, in-depth examinations of multiple death row cases. This first hour of a three-hour-arc takes a look at the case of Julius Jones, a star college athlete convicted of shooting a father of two at point-blank range as his attorneys race against the clock to get him a new trial before his execution date is set.

Previously announced in June 2017, “The Last Defense” will look at cases from all angles returning to the scene of the crime, re-interview witnesses and delve beyond the details of the crime and court proceedings to take a deep look into the personal stories of the subjects, seeking to trace the path that led them to their place on Death Row. With incisive, compelling storytelling, “The Last Defense” gives voice to those who can no longer be heard.

Viola Davis

E! NEWS -- Viola Davis revealed all at the 2017 SAG Awards. Davis, who is nominated for her work in Fences, didn't hold anything back when she and her husband Julius Tennon stopped to talk to E! News' Giuliana Rancic, from Jacuzzi parties with Octavia Spencer to her secret to surviving the red carpet.

"So far it's tame, my feet are OK," she said about her red carpet experience. "I sprayed a little thing on my toe to numb my pain. I got it online."

It's called Still Standing, she said, and "that's why I'm still standing." Davis opened her purse and showed off her other award show secrets: her slippers.

"If I had some prosecco in there it'd be perfect," she said.

Davis has made it no secret that she's a fan of prosecco and hitting the hot tub after a long day and she said her The Help costar and friend Spencer called her up to get in on that action.

"She called us at the last minute and was like ‘Girl, I need to get into the hot tub.' We said, ‘Yeah sure, come on over!'"

Davis is nominated for her work in Fences, she also received an Oscar nomination, her third time up for an Academy Awards. She said Fences has hit because it's relatable.

"I just feel like Fences is a story of my people, of my father, of my mother. And they were not people who invented anything. They are not people who will be in any history books, they were average everyday people who are just living their lives," she said. "I always say as an artist if you're breathing, your story deserves to be told. That's what August Wilson did…It's so universal. That's what I love about it."

Davis is known for her award show speeches, but there's nothing planned for tonight.

"I showed you my purse," she said. "I've got still standing…I've got nothing. I'm not saving the world tonight. I'm drinking."

The two stars came face to face on Oprah's show on Friday, when Winfrey revealed the actress’ portrayal of a desperate mom was "brilliant". She told Davis, "I got such chills when you first entered the screen… I started to cry because I thought, ‘Really, the person who deserved it most got this role.’" And proving further she had no hard feelings, Winfrey added, "When I filled out my nomination ballot, you were the first person I put on the ballot."
