Mac Stone

The Durst Organization helmed by real estate moguls and philanthropists Douglas and Susanne Durst hosted a benefit at 4 Times Square in midtown Manhattan to support The Everglades Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)3 working to protect and restore America's Everglades through science, education and advocacy. The evening welcomed business leaders, philanthropists and political figures to a visual journey showcasing the natural beauty of the wetlands‘ wild and endangered habitat, as captured by renowned nature photographer Mac Stone.

Notable attendees included: Douglas Durst, Susanne Durst, Eric Eikenberg, Mac Stone, CBS New York‘s Lonnie Quinn, Ellin Goetz, Diana Barrett, Marshall Field V, Mary Barley, Gary Lickle, Nancy Deluci, Helena Rose Durst, Alexander Durst, Eva Durst, Mark Domino, Gregg Manjerovic, John Wamser, David Fried, John Hilton and Jody Hilton.

Douglas Durst With Lonnie Quinn

The evening’s emcee Lonnie Quinn, CBS and WLNY 10/55 Chief Weathercaster, opened the evening by discussing his own South Florida roots and the threats facing Florida’s environment posed by perennial toxic algae blooms. “The Everglades is hurting - it's hurting because of water,” he said. “Water is not only the lifeblood for South Florida, but it is the lifeblood of the Everglades. So that is what we are here to do today - to figure out things and raise money to get the Everglades back to where it should be.”

The Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg thanked donors for their support and called on the U.S. Senate to approve a key component of Everglades restoration – the Everglades reservoir – in this year’s America’s Water Infrastructure Act.

Deborah Johnson And Susanne Durst

“For nearly two decades, policymakers and scientists have all agreed that restoration is the real solution to Florida’s water crisis,” he said. “Now, all eyes turn to the United States Senate. The Everglades reservoir awaits approval and we urge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring the reservoir to a vote.”

The evening’s keynote was given by Mac Stone, renowned nature photographer and author of the award-winning book "Everglades: America's Wetlands," who took guests on a visual journey of the wetlands and discussed the technical challenges of capturing powerful images of endangered species, like the Florida Panther, in the wild. He showed an Everglades teeming with life, but also disappearing rapidly due to habitat loss and poor water quality.

“Although the Everglades lives in Florida, it is a natural treasure – one of the most unique, and imperiled, places in the world,” he said. “My work is about trying to dispel some of the myths that the Everglades is a scary swamp, and instead show the incredible array of biodiversity and culture that exists in these wetlands. The Everglades may not have the dramatic mountains and vistas of treasured national parks like Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon, but it is equally deserving of our adoration. Wilderness is a part of who we are as a nation, and it’s incumbent upon us to protect the Everglades as a piece of our natural heritage.”

The event drew more than 150 distinguished guests to The Durst Organization building at 4 Time Square, formerly known as the Conde Nast Building. A reception with light fare by NOMA co-founder Claus Meyer followed the captivating presentation given by Mac Stone.

America's Everglades are the largest subtropical wilderness reserve in North America, the fresh water supply to nearly eight million Floridians, and home to over 70 threatened or endangered species. Nearly 100 years of diking, damming and development has reduced the wetlands to nearly a third of its original size, and contributed to the current widespread toxic algae blooms that have resulted in two states of emergencies since 2016.

The Everglades Foundation

Real estate developers and philanthropists Douglas and Susanne Durst, and The Durst Organization, will host a benefit on September 26, 2018 at 4 Times Square to support The Everglades Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)3 working to protect and restore America's Everglades through science, education and advocacy.

The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with remarks from The Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg and Mr. and Mrs. Durst. Renowned conservation photographer Mac Stone, author of the award-winning book "Everglades: America's Wetlands," will take guests on a visual journey of the wetlands: a series of photographs showcasing the natural beauty of this wild and endangered habitat. A reception with light fare by NOMA co-founder Claus Meyer will follow. Lonnie Quinn, CBS 2 and WLNY 10/55’s Chief Weathercaster, will emcee the evening's program.

"Florida is being ravaged by a perennial algae crisis that is destroying our beaches, fisheries, tourism and real estate industries," said Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg. "New York, like Florida, is facing a similar challenge with toxic algae blooms affecting bodies of water both in the city and upstate. Our two states share so many important cultural and economic connections, so it’s only natural that we should come together in the interest of protecting one of the last truly unique wildernesses in the country – America’s Everglades – and preserving the integrity of our water."

The Dursts, who are pioneers in sustainable building, are long-time supporters of The Everglades Foundation.

“Toxic algae blooms are not just an issue for the Everglades, but for all our waterways, lakes, ponds and coastal waters,” said Douglas and Susanne Durst. “We are proud to support the Everglades Foundation as they fight this scourge and provide invaluable insight and information to communities across the world dedicated to eradicating this problem.”

"It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share the news about B.B. King Blues Club's closing. Despite many sold out shows, the location's rent escalated to an unsustainable level, leaving us no choice but to close our doors. Unfortunately this has become a growing trend in New York City, with other iconic music venues and businesses falling victim to opportunistic property owners. This venue's legacy extends much further than the stage, playing a role in Times Square's revitalization two decades ago. It is a shame that wasn't taken into consideration regarding its future in the area. Nevertheless, we feel extremely grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from both fans and artists over the years to create some truly historic and incredible memories in this space. We hope that we can find a new place to call home very soon so we can continue bringing live music to you all," remarks Tsion Bensusan, Chief Operating Officer.

All shows scheduled beyond the April 29th closing date will be moved to various venues throughout the city. The weekly Sunday Gospel Brunch featuring The Harlem Gospel Choir, will give their two final performances at B.B. King's on April 22nd & 29th. BB King's is currently working with the group to find a new home for their weekly residency which will be announced shortly. Lucille's Grill, located inside the venue, will remain open until April 29th and will feature sets by club favorites: B.B. King Blues Club All-Stars, Jon Paris, A Decade of Soul, and more.

LYNNE LOVE --- Electric Light Orchestra's Jeff Lynne has confirmed that he is working on a new album.

Speaking at the Classic Rock Honors in Los Angeles this week, where he was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Music award, Lynne discussed plans for forthcoming ELO gigs in North America and added: "I'm working on a new album and they'll be involved in the new times when we play."

"I had so much [fun] in Hyde Park with 50,000 people, where I just played in September, first time I've played in 28 years it was fantastic and I loved every minute, so I'm definitely gonna come here [the US] and play." When asked when those gigs would take place, he said: "Not too long." His manager, Craig Fruin, confirmed that the shows would take place in 2015.

Lynne performed at the BBC Radio 2's Festival In A Day in Hyde Park, London, earlier this year, marking the influential pop group's return to the U. K. stage 28 years after their last full concert performance. During the 75-minute set, the Birmingham-born Lynne told the 50,000-strong crowd: "I'll do this again."

The reluctant frontman had been talked into performing at the annual event by BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show host Chris Evans.

The show saw Lynne head a band that included original ELO keyboard player Richard Tandy and the BBC Concert Orchestra, who fleshed out his compositions with record-perfect renditions. Lynne seemed overwhelmed by the reaction, sticking two thumbs up to the crowd after opening with "All Over The World." He said: "Wow, fantastic. It's unbelievable this really. I haven't done anything like this for so long, I can't believe it."

ELO enjoyed a run of 27 Top 40 hits from 1972 to 1986, when Lynne retired the group. He went on to produce the reunited Beatles' new songs for 1995's Anthology albums, as well as George Harrison’s Cloud Nine album and the two Traveling Wilbury albums.

In fact, he went onto a terrifically successful career as a producer, including working on albums by Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson Randy Newman, and Del Shannon, among others. In 2008, The Washington Times named Lynne the fourth greatest record producer in music history.

A planned ELO reunion tour was scrapped in 2000.

DECADES OF DIVAS --- Academy Award-winning songwriter Franke Previte (Dirty Dancing) is realizing an entirely new musical dream in his debut as a show producer with Decades Of Divas, a musical journey with the world’s most influential women in re-inventing and revolutionizing music from the 1940’s through the present.

Decades Of Divas makes its world premiere ahead of a national tour, tomorrow, Nov. 8, 2014 at the Count Basie Theatre, 99 Monmouth St., Red Bank, NJ. Show time is 8:00 PM.

The show stars popular New Jersey shore vocalist-dancer Lisa Sherman, the show’s co-creator, who leads an arsenal of singers and musicians across a pair of nightclubs (G-Dog’s Jazz CafĂ© and the Roxie Lounge) and right down Memory Lane, which runs between them, to evoke and pay tribute to the greatest divas we’ve embraced through the decades. Decades Of Divas features the songs of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, Carole King, Janis Joplin, Celine Dion, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, and, Adele.

“These legendary divas and songs are part of the fabric we, and the generations before us, all grew up with and loved,” says Previte. “So the show follows each singer passing the torch to the next. The performers show how they’re influenced by each diva .They don’t just sing the songs and sound like the artist; there’s a theatrical thread throughout. It’s a journey of five singers celebrating the divas who have influenced them.”

Previte, who earned an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Grammy nomination for writing “(I've Had) The Time of My Life,” the iconic No. 1 hit from Dirty Dancing, has put together a multi-media experience which comes to life in large part through the multiple performing talents of Sherman, a former Radio City Rockette, veteran of several Broadway shows and star of her own TV show in New Zealand.

WOODY & BUZZ BACK ---  They will release on June 16, 2017.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

Toy Story 4 will open a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the Toy Story gang, Disney said, with Lasseter having come up with the idea for the fourth installment with Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, who are the team behind the first three films.

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” Lasseter said in a statement. “We don't want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy (going off to college) so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another movie, but when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Lasseter, also directed Cars and Cars 2. A third installment is also planned.

Toy Story 3 was released in 2010 and earned nearly $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office. Unkrich, who co-directed Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc. and Toy Story 2, directed the third installment.

It will be in theaters June 16, 2017.

A final in-store appearance by Debby Campbell and Mark Bego for their Life With My Father Glen Campbell (Overlook Publishing) this Saturday at Phoenix's Changing Hands bookshop.

Loved Wednesday's CMA Awards. Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood were spot-on perfect as hosts. The material was terrifically well written, but their delivery was astounding. Who knew? Loved when Miranda Lambert sang "All About That Bass" with Meghan Trainor. And, The Band Perry's take on Glen Campbell's "Gentle on My Mind." Terrific show!

RUNT RETURNS TO NYC --- Talk about irascible personalities, Philadelphia’s own Todd Rundgren must rank in the Top 5. I first became of the Runt (from Upper Darby, Pennsylvania) when his first single “We Gotta’ Get You A Woman” topped the charts back in 1970. His double album Something/Anything was so good, so brilliant, he may well have set himself a bar then that was hard to top.

So many brilliant albums followed (Hermit Of Mink Hollow; A Wizard A True Star; Todd; Nearly Human; Faithful) albums followed, including a new band called Utopia, that confused as many fans as he made, yet made some brilliant music.

Production projects with The New York Dolls, Hall & Oates, Badfinger, XTC, Patti Smith and Grand Funk Railroad (!!??) followed, everything bearing his hallowed mark. Several years back, he and bass-mate Kasim Sulton, joined The New Cars and I saw several shows that were absolutely stunning. One, at NYC’s late-lamented China Club, he even performed one of my all-time-Todd favorites “Black Maria.”

Now, living in Hawaii, he returns to New York, B. B. King’s, for two shows Sunday and Monday. Must see music for sure.

FOR JACK --- Over the weekend we learned that the legendary singer and bassist of Cream, Jack Bruce, had passed away at the age of 71. While Cream/Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker immediately took to social media to pay his respects to Bruce and his family, Clapton was notoriously silent. It's no secret that the trio were not on the best of terms.

Monday, however, Clapton simply posted the following on his Facebook page:

DR. BENEDICT --- Marvel has found its Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch is in final talks to play the star role in the studio's latest superhero film, according to sources and London's Telegraph has just now reported the role has been confirmed.

Some of Hollywood's biggest names have been linked to the Scott Derrickson-directed flick in recent months, including Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy and Ryan Gosling.

Phoenix had reportedly reached the negotiation stage to play the powerful neurosurgeon-turned-Sorcerer Supreme, until talks fell through earlier this month, over the number of movies Marvel wanted the actor to commit to.

Cumberbatch had been an early contender for the role, then came back in the running.

The 38-year-old Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness star will play the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats in the upcoming movie, slated for release in 2016.

The character of Doctor Strange was first hatched by Marvel Comics veterans Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1963.

In the comic books, Strange teams up with Thor, the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four to fight enemies.

Marvel has already teased him in several films, including Thor and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, fuelling speculation he'll appear in future Avengers sequels.

Cumberbatch's geek-friendly casting has set Twitter afire, with some users cracking jokes and others expressing their excitement.

Veteran comic book writer J.M. DeMatteis described it as a perfect casting.

"This may be the best comics-to-screen casting since Robert Downey as Iron Man," he posted.

Meanwhile, some wondered whether another franchise was the right move for the acclaimed actor.

"Just remember, for each Marvel movie Benedict Cumberbatch is in, we will lose three or four quality Benedict Cumberbatch performances," one wrote.

Cumberbatch's schedule, which includes his Emmy-award winning role in the BBC's Sherlock Holmes series and theatre productions, will reportedly dictate the success of the deal.

He will next be seen in The Imitation Game and voices characters in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, The Penguins of Madagascar and Warner Brothers The Jungle Book.

TRUE KITSCH --- Actor Taylor Kitsch said in a recent interview that he will be portraying one of four lead characters in the upcoming second season of True Detective. Kitsch said that was so elated to be involved with the series, in fact, that he had been turning down roles in anticipation of joining the other actors. HBO would not confirm or comment on Kitsch.

The actor said that the show would be filming in Los Angeles and that the plot would take place in the present day, though he felt that an old-school vibe was present.

"[True Detective show runner Nic Pizzolatto] is obviously incredibly smart and passionate, so that rubs off," Kitsch said, recalling a conversation he'd had with the show creator. "I can't fucking wait to hit camera. So I'm excited. I loved that first season of it so much. It's just unlike anything I've seen in – I don't know when. And it was so grounded. It could really happen. This is very similar, and I love that. It makes it more readable. It makes these guys more real. Nowadays, it takes fucking balls to stand by that and do it that way."

Previously, HBO confirmed that Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell would be two of the four second-season leads. The eight-episode arc would center on three police officers, one of whom is Farrell, who work with a career criminal (Vaughn) as they attempt to work through a conspiracy that arose in the wake of a murder. The actor who will play the fourth lead has yet to be confirmed.

CLOSING NOTES --- This season's episodes of NBC’s The Blacklist have been uniformly hard to follow; what with so much narrative going on pretty much non-stop. Monday’s episode, The Mombasa Cartel, settled things down a tad and was the best ep so far this season. The way James Spader chews the scenery is positively chilling. Guest star Peter Fonda held court with him for a scene and it was like a master class. I think the writers have come up with so many plots going on at once, they've scarified a bit of clarity …

In case you wondered, Showtime's Homeland has been a bit of a mess this season thus far. With Damien Lewis, the bar was set so high and he was so good, that, now without him, it's like a somewhat different show. Mark my words, Brody will return next season. How? They'll figure it out; don't forget, Bobby Ewing dreamed a whole season of Dallas way back when ...

Georgia Dolenz, Micky Dolenz’s daughter, and her comedy troupe with Rebecca Warm and Sheila Carrasco, We’re Having A Panic Attack is having their next show Saturday, December 6th at the Acme Theater in L. A. ...

Just caught 18-year old Ella Henderson performing on the Today Show ... wow! She reminds me of Adele and Duffy, but just sensational. More on this great new name next time.

"Dallas" hunk, Josh Henderson, joined Wendy Williams on her couch today to discuss his reaction to Larry Hagman's death, long distance love, how his mom is his social media gatekeeper, and having his photo plastered on a Times Square billboard.

Josh revealed the emotionally charged moment he found out about his "Dallas" co-star Larry Hagman's death, saying, "I was in the middle of the Grove and it was an odd experience because that's a very populated area. I'm like freaking out on this phone call and then people were asking to take pictures and stuff. So I was like, trying to smile but I really wanted to get out of there. It was a rough day, you know. Larry and I were very close. He's an amazing man."

Speaking about his love life, Josh revealed how he met his long-distance girlfriend. "Her name is Andrea [Boehlke]. She's an awesome girl. A friend of mine did a show called "Survivor". And she's played "Survivor" twice. They linked us up and we hit it off in the beginning and we're still together today. Almost nine months. Going on nine months. She lives here and I'm in Dallas and L.A., so it's long distance. It's tough."
