Tori Kelly

Tori Kelly covers the February issue of Seventeen (on newsstands tomorrow today). Rejection sucks, but without it, Tori Kelly wouldn’t be where she is today. The singer-songwriter reveals why she’s never lost sight of her dreams—or her smile.

Tori Kelly Quotes

On Simon Cowell deeming her voice “almost annoying” and being ousted before semifinals on American Idol: “Deep down, I knew I was good, and I knew I could do it. I needed to get knocked down and to build up a thick skin. Who knows what I would have been singing about otherwise? You have to go through things in order to inspire others with your story.”

On whether she and Ed Sheeran are more than friends: "I knew that was coming, but no. Working with him was a really cool experience because I was a fan and I didn’t know how it would go, but right away he made it super-chill. Ever since then, he’s been someone I consider a friend and even a mentor.”

On dealing with her manager saying she was boring: "He told me, “People are saying you are vanilla and that you have nothing to say.” I was like, Whoa. I remembered record-label guys telling me I was really reserved when I was younger. Like, “Wake up, you should be bubbly and happy!” And I was thinking, But this is my personality; I’m just chilling. So I went right back to being that little girl who was just so freaked out. I acted as if I didn’t care, but I went home that night and just poured all the feelings that I was holding back into my music. That’s how “Unbreakable Smile” came to be.”

Metropolis Nights

Simon Cowell might want to think about shopping for strollers and diapers. In the January issue of Metropolis Nights magazine (NY/NJ newest entertainment magazine), his new new girlfriend Carmen Electra tells only Chaunce Hayden she wants to have a baby!

Carmen also tells Hayden how she thought her career was over until she decided to turn to singing......

I want to be a mom. I love kids. I just love kids. They put you in a good mood and they are so full of life. That is a relationship I would really cherish. If it doesn’t happen I’m okay with that to. But I do have a strong desire to be a mom.

Would you consider adoption?

I would do that! I haven’t gotten to that place yet, because I want to do all my selfish things first so I can get into that place where there is no resentment. I want to be the best mom I can be. My mom was amazing. She believed in me and we were best friends. The loss of her was really tough for me. So now I yearn for that relationship.

I was at a crossroad. But now I have more of a career vision of what I want to do. There were a couple of years where I lost some inspiration. I didn’t really have a clear direction of what I wanted to do. As you know, it’s important to know exactly what you want to do. I’m really lucky I’ve had a great support system and great friends encouraging me to follow my heart and to do what I love to do.

Which is?

My music. It’s all or nothing again. My fans have supported me through the ups and downs and my fans have always been there for me. When my career was a little slow and I felt uninspired they were there for me. Now I want to show them how much their support means to me. I just want to entertain.

 Kelly Clarkson

The new issue of Us Weekly, which looks at how Kelly Clarkson lost 30 pounds! After enduring constant weight scrutiny ever since she nabbed the inaugural American Idol crown in 2002, the 30-year-old has revealed her healthiest figure yet. Thanks to a five-days-a-week training schedule and a portion-control diet, the 5-foot-4 singer has shed a remarkable 30 pounds in the last six months. “She feels better about herself than she ever has,” a source says of Clarkson, now just 10 pounds away from her ultimate goal weight. And the Burleson, Texas, native has someone to celebrate with when her scale hits that dream number: her Nashville-based beau, Brandon Blackstock, 35. Clarkson credits the talent manager (son of her own longtime manager, Narvel, and stepson of Reba McEntire) with inspiring her slimdown. “No one likes to be not toned when you are dating someone,” she says. And when that someone is as encouraging as Blackstock, who manages Blake Shelton, staying motivated is a snap. Says the insider, “Brandon is the first guy ever who tells her how beautiful and sexy she is. She wants to look good for him.”

Kim Kardashian

Also there is a feature about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West continuing to defy naysayers as they flaunt their love. They “are the real deal,” says a confidant. “I’ve never seen her like this.” And now that West has won over the woman he’s told friends is his “dream girl,” he’s playing for keeps. “He waited for Kim,” says a West pal. “He knows they’re meant to be.” “They’re seriously talking marriage,” says the West pal, “and yes, she would.” He’s also hot to start a spinoff family of their own. “Kanye says he can’t wait to see her carrying his child,” says the source. “He says she will look beautiful pregnant.”

Also included below are this week’s Hot Stuff items which include the scoop on Simon Cowell being worried about Britney Spears’s behavior on The X Factor, Bachelorette Emily Maynard’s family feud, Mark Zuckerberg’s quirky honeymoon, and Tom Cruise’s less than stellar bowling skills.

Simon Cowell

SIMON COWELL: Worried About Brit

The erratic, “zoning out” pop star has Cowell concerned

Oops, she did it again: Britney Spears is back to behaving badly! An insider says The X Factor creator Simon Cowell is already anxious about Spears’ unpredictable behavior. “He wonders if hiring her was a mistake,” says the source. The trouble began May 24 at auditions in Austin. “When a contestant botched her hit ‘Hold It Against Me,’ she just left,” says a witness. “She missed the next four auditions. People weren’t sure if she was coming back.” (Spears, 30, later tweeted: “LOL was just taking a little break people.”) Another issue? Her judging style. A witness says that while Cowell, 52, L.A. Reid, 56, and Demi Lovato, 19, critiqued contestants, Spears “always said nice things, even telling one mediocre singer he could be ‘bigger than Justin Bieber.’ Simon was shocked!” While an X Factor insider counters, “Simon doesn’t regret hiring Britney, and as a judge, she had strong opinions,” the first source cautions, “I don’t know how she’s going to handle the live shows!”

Her Family Feud

As Emily Maynard’s love life heats up on The Bachelorette, her family ties are cooling off. The parents of her late fiancĂ©, Ricky Hendrick, are “livid” the mother, 26, of their granddaughter Ricki, 6, has returned to reality TV. “When Emily first went on The Bachelor, they weren’t pleased, but they supported her,” a source tells Hot Stuff. “Now that she went back, they’re not speaking.” And though another insider insists, “The family has a great relationship with her,” the source maintains, “This is really not the way they saw Emily’s future.”

MARK ZUCKERBERG: His Quirky Honeymoon!

What’s not to “like”? Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, worth $19 billion when his company went public May 18, put his money to work during his Italian honeymoon with Priscilla Chan. The couple, who wed on May 19, stayed at Rome’s $1,000-a-night Portrait Suites hotel before flying, via private jet, to Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. But Zuckerberg, 28, and the med school grad, 27, also made some budget-friendly buys. The newlyweds spent just $40 at kosher eatery Nonna Betta on May 26. “They shared a plate of ravioli,” owner Umberto Pavoncello tells Us, adding that instead of celebrating with cocktails, the couple sipped water and tea!

Tom’s Problem With the Pins

How does Tom Cruise roll? Apparently, right into the gutter! When the Rock of Ages cast hit Miami’s Lucky Strike for a wrap party last summer, the star, 49, totally tanked. “He was horrible,” says a witness, adding that the actor threw zeroes on many frames. Still, the source adds that when he joked with Cruise about his score, “he just looked at me and smiled!”

Ellen DeGeneres

The New American Idol Judge in town Ellen DeGeneres, says Simon Cowell is "meaner" than she thought. Simon Cowell along with Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and other guest judges kicked off the ninth season of the Fox singing competition last month. DeGeneres began her Judgeship the other night. In a video posted on the show's Web site, DeGeneres says Cowell is "actually meaner than I thought. It's hard to listen to him tell people things and for me not to go, `You poor thing!'" Cowell has announced that he's leaving American Idol after this season is over. Paula Abdul left over a salary dispute last year. DeGeneres says no one has given her advice on judging - "they're just letting me do what I want to do."

The guy or girl that writes this column is a very big industry insider who wishes to remain anonymous, but wants to write about all the headlines happening in Hollywood and the Music Industry.

Ringo Starr

RINGO STARR --- I don’t know about you, but I have always loved Ringo. From his Beatle-days to his guest spots on so many different recordings; movies; TV … anyone remember his NBC TV special for his album Bad Boy, in 1978? He’s put out about a dozen or so solo albums which have all been delightful in their own way. His song “Photograph” is a solid-gold, signature song that brings a smile whenever I hear it, as well as the “No No Song.” He famously did several albums with the irrepressible Mark Hudson before they had a major falling out and even hooked up with Eurhythmic-Dave Stewart for last year’s terrific Liverpool 8 album. His latest release, Y Not, via Universal, is noteworthy for several developments. First, it’s the first one he’s produced by himself; second, Paul McCartney sings on one track and plays bass on another; and, third, the opus features his new brother-in-law … Joe Walsh! My, imagine having Joe Walsh as a brother-in-law? Must be a lot better than it sounds at first! I had the pleasure of meeting Ringo’s barrister (Bruce Grakal) several years back, he’s also Micky Dolenz’ guy, and in a late-night dinner/schmooze-fest at Palm West, he regaled our entire group with several delicious tales of the doings in the biz. Every so often Ringo’s name would be referenced too and the thing we all realized then, was the fact that we ALL loved him. The track “Peace Dream” references John Lennon several times, this is the one were McCartney adds bass, and it’s simply terrific. Not only due to the references, but the spirit of the song. Outstanding track! “The Other Side Of Liverpool” harks back to the early days of The Beatles and references the wonderful ‘Roy Orbison’ who the group opened for several times back in the day … and, was also a Traveling Wilbury with George Harrison. Written with Stewart, it rocks heavily and again, the spirit is infectious. “Walk With Me” is the much talked about track where Ringo sings with McCartney. Ringo sounds great, McCartney a bit too winsome. One of the reviews I read on this album posited that Ringo is never afraid of harking back to his roots, where McCartney often doesn’t. I don’t know about that sentiment, but Ringo indeed relishes it and if you’ve followed him, as I have, it’s a delight. And, why shouldn’t he? I mean, few of us have had a life even approaching his. Jealousy … perhaps? Another Stewart/Starr track “Time” is also terrific. It’s the third track on the album that features violin and it works very well … perfectly suited for Ringo’s voice. Another track “Everybody Wins” (co-written with the great Johnny Warman who wrote ‘Runaways’ with Ringo on a 1992 solo album and was one of the first artists signed to Ringo’s own Ring-O Records back in the day) is another big favorite. Ringo’s always had the ability to select the catchiest pop tracks and this one rate with his best work. Right on there with “Weight Of The World” from that 1992 album Times Takes Time. Interestingly enough, Gary Wright and Edgar assist on the background vocals. “Mystery of The Night” is written with Richard Marx, and while the track contains some of the famous-Marx-schmaltz-tricks, it’s another standout track. Starr has always functioned best with a collaborator, Hudson, Stewart … on this album its multi-instrumentalist Bruce Sugar. He co-produced the album in addition to playing on most of the album. I only know a handful of radio stations that could even contemplate playing this album … and, that’s a shame as it rates with his best solo works ever if not THE best. Where’s Alison Steele and Scott Muni when you them? Also, on the album are Joss Stone performing with Richie on the track “Who’s Your Daddy.” Ringo’s great … no question ever about it. btw: He gets his star on Hollywood Blvd. today! Thanks to Harry Weinger for hooking us up with a copy.

Pete Townsend

HIGH NUMBERS --- That was the original name for The Who who were absolutely rivetingly good at the Super Bowl last night on CBS. Let’s face it: you got one of the best audiences ever, many half-loaded, and most of them have been listening to this group since the 70s … so, they were due at this event. My friend Keith Girard said he was surprised they went with them at all … but, with three of their songs on three CSI shows each week … they've never been bigger. It was PR-guru’s David Salidor’s first concert ever … at The Lido Beach Club in Long Island around 1970 … so, their music has definitely become the soundtrack of many generations. They opened up with “Pinball Wizard” and ended with “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend looked and sounded terrific; Zak Starkey (yes, Ringo’s son) on drums was terrific; and the laser, fireworks and light show wasn't bad either. I loved Bruce last year, McCartney and Prince … but, I think The Who topped them all. Awesome show. Let’s see, they've had Paul, Prince, Bruce, Billy, and now, The Who … who’s next? Dylan? Yes, The Kids Are Alright!

Gloria Gaynor

WENDY KAY --- We had a chat with Wendy Kay from the Utopia booking agency and while we’ll have the full interview in a future posting, we figured we'd bring you some juicy highlights of our talk. Utopia and Wendy are currently booking the awesome Teen Idols 2 show with Micky Dolenz, Mark Lindsay and Peter Noone. Here a brief take: “My Dad originally ran the agency (then called Mars), and he had a heart attack. My mom asked me to help out … and, I never left. I’d go to see my Dad in the hospital and tell him about what deals I did that day.” “I’ve been Mark Lindsay’s agent for about 20 years and after talking with my partners, who rep Micky and Peter, we conceived this brilliant, interactive show. The three of them are on stage at the same time … it’s really terrific to hear these voices sing on each other’s songs. They’ll be in Las Vegas this spring. Mark will be in NYC at Town hall performing with his band in March.” “I have always loved classic rock … but, I love Duffy and Adele as well. Music thrills me … always has.”“Every year we design different themed shows. We’ll also be rolling out A Love Affair, which will feature Gloria Gaynor, Maxine Nightingale and Peaches and Herb. Disco /R&B … a terrific show of each. We’re also doing some shows with Pablo Cruise and Bonnie Tyler. The venues love the themed nights because they sell a night of memories and the show is produced with one band. Check out Wendy's site here....

Colin Firth

A SINGLE MAN --- I know I’m a bit late to the game, but I just caught a screening of Tom Ford’s wonderful movie, starring the wonderful Colin Firth. I’ve been a Tom Ford-fan for quite some time … starting with his game-changing ways at Gucci and more recently at his own Tom Ford Designs. I think that not only has he definitely cemented his stock as a style-icon, but his works (photos and all) are stunningly special. Part Versace, part Armani, but all his own. His attention to detail is extra special. The movie, based on the book by Christopher Isherwood (set in Los Angeles in 1962) recounts the aftermath of Firth, after the death of his life-partner. Told bluntly and honestly, I think it’s the best work by Firth so far; and, I especially loved his work on the film Love Actually in 1993. Julianne Moore as his broken-neighbor, harboring a loss much like his, is totally spot on and for me, attests to her work as a major actress all over again. A bravura performance for the ages this one is. Working with a Brit-accent, she’s flawless. Both have been nominated, Firth for an Oscar too … I don’t think he’ll get it, but it’s a breathtakingly good movie and very, well-deserved. Emotive, stirring, compelling … brilliant!

Howard Stern

A STERN IDOL --- Howard Stern as the replacement for Simon Cowell? I love it. I’ve known for Howard for years, in fact when I lived in Amagansett, his house was literally the next beach over. Whenever I’d see him town, he’d be chased by fans and the paps alike … and, you know what ... he couldn’t have been nicer. His concern always was for the rest of the townsfolk and for his privacy. He is the one star I can think of that actually does get it. He is simply perfect for this possible new role. Much to my chagrin, I’m sorry I didn’t think of it first. Not only does Stern have the chops for choosing the best and the rest, but his attitude in a no BS manner would be not only similar to Cowell’s bluntness at times, but downright funny. His better half, the winsome Beth Ostrosky is one terrific gal, and truth be told, the two of them are one power-couple in the best possible terms. I actually cannot think of a better choice! Here’s to the idea the year so far … terrific! I’ve never been an AI-devotee, but if Howard joins up, I might just give it another spin.

Simon Cowell

As we reported a while ago, Simon Cowell is announcing that he's quitting "American Idol" when the new season ends in May. Gossip has been flying about the music kings future on the show, with his brother Tony saying a statement would be made in the early part of 2010. He said, "A press statement is being prepared which will confirm what everybody expected: Simon will leave Idol at the end of 2010 to concentrate on bringing the American version of (U.K. talent show) X Factor to U.S. TV in 2011." And now Cowell is confirming the news of his departure. In his statement, Cowell reveals he plans to launch his "X Factor" on U.S. TV in 2011.

Simon Cowell

American Idol's Simon Cowell's brother says the next season of the hit television show will be the judge's last. Tony Cowell said in his weekly podcast, "The Cowell Factor," that a statement was being prepared that would certify that the acerbic British judge was leaving the popular Fox signing competition at the end of 2010. Simon Cowell will concentrate on bringing his popular U.K. talent show "The X Factor" to the U.S. next year, his brother said on the Saturday podcast, which has since been removed from the site. Simon has been with "American Idol" since the series debuted in 2002. His contract ends after the upcoming ninth season, which begins Jan. 12th. The judging panel was shaken up last year with the arrival of songwriter Kara DioGuardi and departure of singing icon Paula Abdul, who is being replaced next season by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

Simon Cowell

Former American Idol star Paula Abdul's plans to surprise her friend Simon Cowell at his 50th birthday bash have been cancelled by the flu. Paula was invited to help Cowell celebrate the landmark birthday at a lavish $1.5 million party in Hertfordshire, England tonight, but after getting ill, she now has to recoup in bed on her doctor’s orders. Paula is devastated she won’t be able to see her pal on his big day. She writes, "Mama is sick. Up all night with the flu. I feel terrible. I knew I should’ve gotten the flu shot. Gotta get better… I even had a funny surprise in store for him.
"Not making it to the party after all. Dr. said no way. I’m bummed (but) I’ll survive."

Paula Abdul With Simon Cowell And Randy Jackson

American Idol's Simon Cowell is reaching out to former judge Paula Abdul following her departure from the television show, dismissing rumors of a rift between the couple. Paula quit her role on the judging panel earlier this month, following a reported dispute with the shows bosses over her multi-million dollar contract. The show has brought in celebrity guests judges, including Victoria Beckham, Katy Perry and Mary J. Blige, to fill in for Abdul, as he searches for a replacement. But the music king is adamant he's not bitter about Abdul's decision to quit and is insisting he will always be a friend to her. He tells Fox news, "She's taken the decision in her life now, which you have to respect her for making the decision. I didn't want to get involved in what was going on because it wasn't really any of my business but I spoke to her a lot through the whole process. "I always thought she was the heart of the show. I'm not the heart, I'm not even the brain actually. But she was the heart, so you've taken that away so it's a different show. I'm sad, I am. I'll probably see her next week. I'm going to listen to what she wants to do next. I will support her in anything she wants to do next. I think she is TV gold, genuinely."

Paula Abdul

Music King Simon Cowell is adamant that Paula Abdul will stay on as a judge on the hit television show "American Idol". Simon has told the bosses he wants her contract to be renewed once again. Paula's future on the TV talent contest was thrown into chaos this weekend when her manager, David Sonenberg, told the Los Angeles Times that "it does not appear" that she will be returning in 2010's "Idol." Discussions had come to a standstill between Abdul and the television executives as she hopes to return to her spot alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi. New gossip reports are claiming the reason behind Abdul's not signing for the show is because she is demanding $20 million -- $10 million more than the bosses are willing to offer her. But music mogul Cowell has eased the minds of Abdul's supporters, who have since launched an online campaign on to keep her on the show, insisting there's no need to worry. He says, "She'll be fine. She'll be on the show. I don't get a lot of say. I've just made it clear that I want Paula on the show." Ryan Seacrest also spoke in Paula's defence on Twitter yesterday, saying, "I connected with Paula Abdul today ... love you. PA. Can't imagine doing Idol without you!"

The stars really came out for the "American Idol" Grand Finale 2009 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Paula Abdul looked stunning. The worlds famous and soon to be famous attended this great event. They included, David Archuleta, Jillian Barberie Reynolds, Bo Bice, Jason Castro, Daughtry, Janice Dickinson, Kara DioGuardi, Fergie, Heather Locklear, Nigel Lythgoe, Steve Martin, Country singing star Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and many other stars. This was one night for everyone to remember. Of course the huge shocker was when Kris Allen won. The sexy runner-up, 26-year-old Adam Lambert of San Diego, had been considered the most likely winner since nearly the start of the season. His performances and huge vocal range consistently won the best critiques from the judges while Kris, an assuming pop-rocker, flew under the radar for much of the season until last night.
